Grow corn it is easier to hide in when the gorrillas on horses try to net your mutant post-Fukushima ass. No guns or gold are going to save ya from isotopes in soil and rain.
@441rider Retarded drunk comments like this shouldn't make anyone wonder why so many people are fed up with youtube. Damn, and here I thought "guns or gold" would save my "mutant post-Fukushima arse" Guess I need a new plan.... Thanks so much for the awesome effort and well thought out comment!
I don`t understand your point of view on the problem, not getting enough amonium nitrat for the plants, if you don`t have chemial fertilizers. Urine is free, and dilluted in to som kind of irrigation system it will sirve perfectly for that purpose. It has been done for thousands of years.
@au46tro9 Perfect example of people speaking out of their own perspective. Yes using just urine might work on a 4'x4' raised bed growing some corn. Are you going to have enough urine to fertilize a 1/4 acre? And being that we are talking about SURVIVAL gardening- are you going to be able to risk the heavy SMELL of that much urine? Think that won't be a security risk? Your darn right that will be a security risk in the PAW.
I like your demonstration of the problems created by lack of experience with gardening. I agree crop selection is very important for survival. What crops provide food after some disaster very much depends on them being suited to the conditions you can provide. Sunchoke is a high yielding, pest tolerent and low maintenance crop. Other crops also have potential to crop productively in adverse conditions. I would like to start a charity to develop a seed bank of these potential catch crops.
If everyone has a victory garden (and everyone should be starting right now as the videographer says) that will reduce the need for people to go robbing other's stores of food. Also plant fruit and nut trees NOW for your zone that will provide a reliable yearly crop of vitamin C and protein even if there is a problem with seed crops. The oil has peaked, so the sooner you get these trees delivered, your gardens planted and the knowledge embedded in your brains, the better off your kids will be.
I love the "face reality" aspect of your video's. I practice permagardening. the nice thing about that it is NO need for pesticides or man made fertilizers.
You can even use a "chicken tractor" for loosening soil and such.
What's really great about pg is that it's very, very low maintenance once you get it established. It's really great for those with less than green thumbs as the set up is the hard part, the growing is the easy part.
@marcjtdc Wow, thanks. I had NEVER thought of that (sarcasm added). Yes of course. ANYONE, ANY PLACE that doesn't keep a 24/7 watch during something happening is a fool. If they make it 150 miles out from the big cities, then find me, then make it through the 4-5 various detection methods, then climb over several fences, avoid the pack of dogs, make it past the lookouts without getting shot, then into the fenced garden areas they can steal a tomato, they deserve it getting that far. LOL
@SurvivalReport I did not mean to insult. pretty much nobody lives more than 5 miles from another home. So, they will not have to travel 150 miles to steal your crop. If they attack during a rainstorm/full moon, you will not detect them. Your videos are very entertaining mixed with good knowledge/advice. Thank you friend!
@marcjtdc I was talking 150 miles in relation to MASSES of people, not 3 or 4 that will be busy guarding their own places. How do you figure someone won't be "detected" in full moon or rainstorm? I think you should research some of the options that are/were available for perimeter protection. Most are in no way affected by either "rain" or "full moon." I'm NOT talking about some hookey can with BB's in them on strings type deal, I'm talking about real perimeter alarms.
For your water concerns you should have mentioned water barrels to catch rain water. Have them elevated to about eves trough hight for decent water pressure. Ive even gone to the extent of making a windmill that powers a water pump made out of an old bike pump and 1 way valves. And this summer im planing on covering my south facing walls with latices and having vined plants grow and act as insulator to keep the house cooler
definitely disagree with you on the NOT WEEDING aspect of your plan here. not only do the weeds use up some of your nutrients that you said are SO essential for your vegies growth but having compact and weed filled garden rows is radiculous. Your gardens plants need soil that is loosened regularly to encourage enough oxygen to be available and having weeds is also just going to make your plants compete even more for light and energy.
Knowledge of wildly growing plants is another skill that might help. While it would be unrealistic to be able to base everything solely off of that, its a good back-fall to know about. If a crop fails, you can know what wild nuts/berries/leaves in the area are edible. Experience with this is key too as some are poisonous.
What some people still seem to be missing is that the idea is growing enough to eat fresh AND to put up enough to keep you through till the next harvest- EVERY YEAR. "Oh but you can make manure tea to grow corn with" Yep, that cute little 4x4' bed will do well like that. Try doing that over 1/2 ACRE. Why that much? Cause that 16 square foot area will NOT grow enough for eating fresh AND putting enough up to keep you through next harvest. Go out and EXPERIENCE these things.
Went back again over thanksgiving. While the sign still doesn't say camp FEMA on it, it could be posted any time and put into operation. Looks like a camp, acts like a camp, serves almost no other purpose. It's a camp!
@nextlifeguitarist you are going to need seven year of supplies and go into seclusion. if you look well fed you will be a target so you need to look underfed during the crisis and send out family members to acquire food to look like you are in the same boat as the sheeple.
Its too late now to stop it . Another YT that backs up the case is from 60Mins titles: 2010 2011 deepening mortgage crisis. Prepare those that are open to listen. Quickly forget the Sheeple there isnt enough time for them. FEMA has them covered. Go to a YT titled: Beech Grove FEMA death camp. If u cant afford to get away buy seeds and h2o filters. If u still have a little means retreat! we bought a micro farm in Cent Amer in a tight knit community if u have interest darinsmith@inbox.com
@biospharms Beech Gorve has been debunked but you are right on the other things. the evil in the world is so hard core that sheeple just cant understand that it could even exist.
I've seen some futuristic globe maps that put Arizona closer to the equator (resulting in a tropical area, I assume). I wish there was a way to plan for gardening after the axis shift, but there probably isn't any way to possibly know what the heck is going to happen. And the thought of that sucks because I really love gardening!
Hey guys,Your life depends on a few things. Water, shelter, and, FOOD. Do you understand how fragile your food supply is?... Get FREE food.. Go to (aplus.mysundanceglobal com ), Watch the video and sign up. This food has a 15 yr. shelf life. None GM. The food is great too.
The "3 sisters" is a method of companion planting where each asists the other. No hybrids. 2nd, do not plant a "summer fresh" item with a "winter storage" set. Last thing you want is stepping all over your winter food dried beans to pick fresh corn. 1st sister brows tall, corn, 2nd sister spreads and protects the soil and water, squash, 3rd climbs ,supports against wind, collects next years nitrogen. Beans, make more nitrogen than they use. Time separate, early, others, then late sisters.
@dawnwinds58 It's called the Milpa system. Used for millennia by the south american natives. Two nitrogen hungry crops and a legume. You can plant whatever legume you wish -beans, soybean, lucerne etc. Typically it is corn mixed with a cucurbit (squash, cucumber or zucchini, melon, pumpkin) and the aforementioned legume. peace
Your videos are very informative. Thanks for showing. Don't let the ignorant comments get to you. Some of us don't know the specifics to gardening. I'm not going to do it as a survival thing but as a little hobby. If that works out for me, I will eventually save money from the stores. :) Plus I want my kids to enjoy our vegetable garden. It'll be fun, educational, and yummy.
Great videos they are very informative. Have you ever thought of using a Rain water harvesting storage? You can build these on your own. If you start harvesting rain now you should have plenty for when you need it for gardening, showers etc..
but enough to can, and enough to simply give away to others who's gardens may not have done as well as ours that yr. Now dont get me wrong, we dont break records every year, but we still end up with more than enough to eat fresh and can.
(the years that we dont do better than the yr before, our neighbors who have gardens are more than happy to trade or even give them to us because at one time or another, we helped them. We've only had one constant problem, worms always end up on our cabbage.
Ok so anyway, my family and I have grown a garden every year for as long as I can remember. They grew their garden every year since they were little and my grandparents on both sides farmed for survival and to make a living selling surplus. I have been gardening for over 20 yrs and the hardest part for me is weeding. You can say all you want about, "ppl who say its easy", but maybe its not easy I'm just used to it. Our garden is 65' by 55' and we have enough for not only us to eat fresh....
@Caveman0713 That's not what I said. The point was that a lot of people who have not gardened long term think that it will be easy to grow their own food after the fact. The point of the first couple videos was to discuss some of the problems with that theory.
Yes I know the work involved and it sounds like you do also. :)
Never had a problem with cabbage- it's a fall/winter crop down here which might be why we have never had bugs. Good luck.
@SurvivalReport By no means am I saying that someone can just walk outside one day, churn some dirt and end up with enough food to even take care of themselves, let alone a group of people. But I've been at this for a couple decades now and its been a tradition of my family since before america was even a country. It was Natives that taught the colonists how to survive the harsh climates when they first stepped onto our soil.
the common survival/preparedness thinking of "when my storage food runs out I'll just grow a garden." Idiocy. You won't even know what tools you'll need until your garden is up and running, never mind soil quality, drainage, local pests, beneficial species, the list goes on. I've got a tiny garden and it's a lot of brainwork and handwork. If I were counting on my tomatoes this spring because my "survival cache" ran out, I'd be worm food by now.
2012 will pass without a problem unless some rabid folks MAKE something happen. self fulfilling prophecy can be a total pain on those of us who are a bit more open minded. for pete sakes, i'm more worried about what our governments got planned for us than some cosmic FUBAR event. knowledge is power and prepping for bad juju is always a good idea. a few years back we had an ice storm here , we had a week without power. we did fine BECAUSE i was prepared for bad juju.
Hi, Your message is right on. Folks just don't realize how much work and learning is involved with being able to grow your own. A decade and your really just getting somewhat capable... That can be hard for folks to believe with this 'instant' everything we've got going. Keep up the good work.
Well for one thing, if there is a nuclear event..what did not kill all of u right away would leave you weak and diseased/radiation exposure and burns so infection would be a problem also, water and food would be contaminated so there goes the garden idea..the radiation fallout alone would poison everything...now as for raiders, who might they be? government? if gov't there is no way any amt of guns u hoard will defend u from what the military carries...
@kokonutbaby1 Contrary to popular disarmament aka "peace geek" propaganda, not everyone is going to die in a nuclear war... Get educated. Within about a year UV light will be back to similar to now levels. Water can be filtered and of course wells would not be affected in the same way as ponds and rivers. The "raiders" your referring to would most likely be your starving neighbors that also believed they would all die in a nuclear war, yet lived through it UNPREPARED. Education is the key...
@SurvivalReport I dont know if you're calling me a peace geek or not but Id rather be for peace than a warmonger any day. I am educated and know some things about radiation exposure. Im also a nurse and know alot about wounds, infections, etc. What kind of educational background do you have? No not all die in a nuclear war if only one bomb is dropped (look at the Japanese after the hydrogen bomb was dropped on 2 cities and the awful results)..but who says only one will be dropped or one area?
@kokonutbaby1 I don't mean standard type education, although I have four years of college also for what that's worth. I meant getting past the "we are all going to die" propaganda of the socialist disarmament crowd. Most everything can be survived with proper preparations. Now if folks are "serious" about survival but continue to live in ground zero near a military base, large city or other target areas, well then their preps better include a BLAST shelter also. Not everyone will die...
@SurvivalReport You're right. Anyone who's bothered to research the subject knows that after a nuclear exchange, most of the casualties will be due to diseases caused by starvation, malnutrition, and unsanitary drinking water. Yes, just like any other major war affects the civilian pop. Dysentery will kill more in the first 18 months than radiation.
Every one needs to learn gardening, home canning, hunting and preparing wild game, area appropriate fishing gear & techniques.Get adequate water filters like home gravity filters,& survival straws that enable you to suck water right out of a pond or puddle. Get A SURVIVAL MANUAL,a rifle & ammo, a few REAL sharp knives, small propane tanks for grills, outdoor cooking equipment, fishing tackle, medical supplies, & plenty of x-tra canned & dried foods, vitamins, powdered milk, and a K.J. BIBLE.
Dude, you're pro, no doubt about that. I'm just a keen gardener which is why I clicked on your video. Thing about the corn, growing the beans between is good but better is prepping the soin with your own urine. If there's a group, use everyone. It works and is best for all crops needing NPK. It will cause too much leaf growth in some crops but corn is where it really comes into it's own. It really is the best.
I started with potatoes and they store for planting the following year...start with the basics and add a little each year...the key is to learn to grow from seeds...keep a survival nitrogen can of seeds stored so you can grow an entire garden in a pinch...
Agreed,we should b producing r own food(50+%), but if U suggest some 2012 type event, than wouldn't safe water b a problem too?As well as whoever lived(raiding) U& time to (grow) produce food. Pioneers,generally didn't live past 50 & as for storage,depending where U live, mayb difficult & hazardess.Just observations...as I live in the North,sooo I'd b screwed anyhow...
@ttitanic121 2012 will likely pass without incident. What do you think will cause the water to become unsafe? Yes raiders will be a problem for a year or two until the numbers are thinned out greatly. You need solid defensive preps, train regularly and have reliable friends and family that does the same. As to the "pioneers didn't live past 50" if it's a question of living 14 more years or dying tomorrow which one would you choose?
2012 reference-some unforseen world disaster. water-fresh water is already becoming a problem, worldwide & if there's no normal type society(everyone 4 themselves) scenario, we would not have an infrastructure to depend on=polluted or less water. living- would depend on what kind of world you'd be living in...generally I'm agreeing with your views about growing & the education & results of our own impact on the environment.
I'm glad to see a person who I take to be largely conservative in his outlook endorses peak oil. There seems to be a view amongst some bloggers that Peak Oil is a liberal conspiracy. I refer you to watch?v=FuzSqOgDbV0 . This individual thinks oil is produced from and non-fossil abiotic source.
I agree with you that if a person has not raised their food for year to year they will not be able to survive from a garden. They may hit a few good years and just make it, but all it takes is one failed crop. You can tell a false survivalist from one that is real. A false one will tell you that you can do it easily; that they have been raising their own food for years and never had a problem. People who actually do raise their own food have had tons of problems they had to learn to overcome.
@myleghurts100 In these parts potatoes, carrots and onions are all cold weather crops. Also they are all considered root crops. Being one "type" of crop you would need to get some other crops in their for rotation of the soil also. If you grow the same thing in the same place over and over you have massive problems with bugs, disease, etc.
Def. agree experience is one of biggest factors along with things such as soil and rainfall.
Concerning the video and other comments , I disagree strongly that corn is not one of the best survival crops. It is neither high maintenance nor low yielding if you know what you're doin, adequate spacing, rotation, etc. Its the highest yielding traditional grain and served innumerable people very well, it practically settled a big part of this country, but those folks had plenty of experience.
Have you tried growing the 3 sisters guild? (along the lines of your soybean idea).
The three plants grow better together than they do separately.
Peas/beans fix nitrogen and use the corn for trellis, while the squash is a living mulch and conserves water by shading the ground. Increased diversity reduces the problem of crop failure. The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) used this strategy successfully over a long period of time.
@permalove1 By the time corn will get to a decent size here it's so hot the peas will be done. The beans we usually plants are bush type. We have done this in the past with climbing beans though. It's a good concept.
So many concepts in this sort of thing don't mess together well. For example free ranging chickens. Great idea and we do it where possible. However they will tear up your garden, scatter your compost pile, scatter the manure from under the rabbits, etc. Catch 22 on some stuff.
@patkane50 you don't sound crazy at all not only does the gov not care for it's people they want to kill thier people. population reduction to kill 90% of the people is thier goal.
The only way to be fully prepared as far as growing plants is concerned is to practice, practice, practice. When researching what types of fruit and vegetables will be grown, think about what your family will need for an entire year.
Hi I just received the seeds I bought from: bepreparednow. net They were only $44.99 with free shipping. It has 27 varieties of NON hybrid seeds and it is sealed in a Mylar Bag. It was the best deal I found on the Internet and the variety is great.
I couldn't agree more. Actually this fellow has been emailing me and he ended up being a pretty nice guy. We don't see eye to eye on everything, but I'm fine with that :)
Where did you get this idea I am a enviro nazi? becaus eI told you commercial fert. isnt needed? science says that. You erased my posts which prove everything you said about me total lies. whats YOUR goal. surely its not food production. I listed technics, and crops which anyone can grow almost anywhere with NO outside sources of fertiliser, outside of some wood ash and urine. Ive perfect my knowledge over decades. How bout you? Why erase posts listing crops that grow freely as weeds?
Think/Mrgrower/wingz wow, three accounts now? That's pretty childish don't you think?
For the third time now- I deleted your comments where you misquoted me and made silly insults. Yes you are acting like a liberal enviro nazi when you misquote me and say that I said "pesticides are good" which OF COURSE I DID NOT SAY AT ALL. I also deleted some of your comments that included INSULTS. Re post your "gems of wisdom" without the insults and misquotes with your 4th account. and you'll be fine.
I posted info on fertilisers EVERYONE has, and info about grains most do not know about, which make growing food WAY easier. This guy erased it. clearly survival is NOT his goal. He is in georgia, he could be growing a garden of eden with no effort depenind on what we wants, yet his brain is programmed to think one way, so thats all he sees. do not follow this man if survival is your goal. sadly I cant give one single source or I would. Most people have his disease, which is why I offered a cure
Maybe if you gave real advice instead of stupid INSULTS your comments would be more welcome. Your comments were deleted because you acted like a total jerk in making them. I notice you didn't comment on the videos where I showed the earthworms thriving in soil where commercial fertilizer was used last year. VIDEO PROOF TOO MUCH FOR YOU HUH? I welcome your comments and don't have a problem debating you, just don't be a jerk with your comments huh?
So I made new account, this guy has NO clue, I posted grains which grow in any soil typ in any part of the country with NO inputs. Ive grown and bred plants for decades. this guy is clueless on most everything he says. not only that he is the one with zero comprehension. Otherwise he would see, I laid out plans for sustainable havey food production. I have seeds which would grow like weeds for him in georgia. tomatoes, beans, peas, grains of many types. and he attacks me???? this guy is a liar
Here this organo nazi spammer ADMITS he has multiple accounts just to insult and spam people with. The comments he is crying about that I deleted were full of INSULTS AND RIDICULE so deleted them and blocked his account. If he wanted to RATIONALLY DEBATE he would not have gotten stupid with insults. He commented on most of the early videos but did NOT comment on the later videos where I showed earthworms THRIVING where commercial fertilizer was used. VIDEO PROOF was too much for him I guess.
I got this from this guy before he erased my posts-I'm always concerned about people who plan to survive but have LISTENING OR READING COMPREHENSION problems. No where did I say "pesticides are good" that's a really stupid assumption on your part! People that can't follow simple instructions and comprehend things REASONABLY CLEARLY have little chance to survive. You probably listen to what is actually said versus just getting pissed off cause I'm not an organo nazi like you are.
Oh yes a place near where I live actually built a huge compost system for septic tank waist now and using it on probably animal feed crops. It's the temp;) I just mean where as livestock manure we don't have to worry about that stuff much.
Well good to know urine is safe.. doesn't make sense we don't put back in what we take out.. and pollute the water in the process, probably humanities largest social trauma comes from that relationship!
wild gourd leaves are the perfect bug repellent for your garden. make a sun tea out of the leaf and spray it on the garden a few times in the summer, unlike pesticides it kills nothing but the bugs will now leave your crops alone, less than a 2% damage is my norm,
Great video, I have been having no luck at all with corn in my second or first year of gardening.
On the other hand my squash have been kicking ass! Check out Kabucha, you can store it for months after havesting. IMHO it is a potential ultimate survival plant that is really under-rated.
Corn is a heavy feeder, Spending money on fertizer is not an option. forgive the gross, but save your pee and put it all winter in set holes where you plan to grow corn, you will be amazed, it has worked for me for over 20 years.
is that safe? I don't know if it would be for any root crops..
on an other pee note in spring start early and gradually make a pee perimeter on tall grass/shrubs away from your crops to keep away smaller animals it may work for deer too depending on logistics of your garden. this especially works if your a meat eater as they sense that your a predator or bigger predator.
we had our garden for 20 years next to the feed lot, with root crops,
just wash off the crops,
Manure has been the main crop fertilizer for many a years, using pee is the safe enough, compared to manure.
never forget dirt its self has bactieria that is deadly as cobra posion. so I wear gloves plus spiders and rattlers have a hard time biting through leather.
That's opposite of what I heard, that human and cat poop is supposed to be bad or any carnivore and live stock is safe. Maybe it's virus not bacteria to worry about? bacteria lots of common ones are to do with we live in such a sterile way that our body over reacts.
I just heard that's why we don't use our own manure legally. pee of healthy person is actually very clean come to think of it. Maybe your right I don't know. Seems it's good idea for corn though for sure.
pee is safe, not the other stuff, takes to long to break down, but A friend does that to. I stick to PEE, plus it has all the vitimins you took as the body on average dumps about 80% through pee.
In a truly post-apocalyptic/economic post-collapse scenario you still have to deal with people. Arable land requires a stable society. Property won't be possible without the force to keep it. Short of staying up all night with a .50 cal,, and another guy on a Barrett, you'll never harvest this crop... And forget it if militia or bandits want your food. The Neolithic model of survival requires groups. Hey, post-apocalpyse scenarios are fun, but if it comes to this, I think it's game over...
Read my blog brother, LOTS of group related articles. Just because someone doesn't make videos with a balaclava on and a voice changer bitc%ing about the NWO doesn't mean they don't have a well thought out defense plan. ;) Just because they don't blather on about "militias" doesn't mean they don't have like minded friends. As I said in the below comment, sometimes you have to read between the lines for Opsec sake :)
Why would anyone be foolish enough to assume that someone who has had the foresight to prepare on this level would not have multiple options for defense, have trained extensively, be properly equipped etc. Or do you think I'm some idiot "earth worshipper" who voted for Obama and doesn't like guns? Come on guy wake up and read between the lines. Just because someone doesn't blather on about guns, defense, etc. doesn't mean they aren't prepared for that. It's called OPSEC .....
hey man i agree with you. advertiseing about your defensce situation destroys every element of surprise. wich is esential during civil unrest hungry people do not think clearly and act on impulse.keep up the great videos.how did the soybean experiment go?
You can use grass clippings to add nitrogen to the soil and help keep the weeds down. I have an old man powered lawn mower to cut grass with so I don't need gas or electric to collect grass. Also plant squash in with your beans and corn to shade the soil and help retain moisture.
But weeds sap nutrients from your soil so it's best to pluck them so the food plants can use all available nutrient. Also rotate your crops, don't grow the same product in the same area.
it doesn't matter if you're liberal or conservative, these are skills we need to know (esp some of the food skills that you talk about in later vids (6-8?)
Yep gotta rev up the old Gomer er compost pit I mean. Just rebuilt mine during the last two days. It's now 11 concert blocks long and four deep divided into two bins. Course every time I rebuild it, it gets bigger. I need to go recycling again.
There's a pile of blocks, rubbish and grass clippings down the street by the old abandoned RR track. I figure I'll take the cart and a big garbage bag, load up the cart with clippings, add three blocks and the bag of garbage.
Not to mention the only thing they are good for is nitrogen fixing, for eating they are nearly useless. Full of anti-nutrients, and actually cause all sorts of health problems in both humans and animals. I'm sticking to stuff that isn't likely to be contaminated by GMOs, namely corn and soy. I am going to prefer other grains to corn, it is much too soil depleting. Ever consider non-mainstream grains like buckwheat or Quinoa? I'm experimenting to see what will yield the most with least work.
Buy the bags that are inside the store- i.e, didn't get wet. The fertilizer will get wet even through the plastic bag. We are rotating 2 year old 10-10-10 and it's working great. I would assume 5 year if kept dry and out of sunlight.
cool so ill say 4 years and call it good. about how much would you use for half an acre also what are the advantages of 10-10-10 over 13-13-13 I live in western TN and the dirt isn't great. I'm not new to gardening but am newer for ferts and soil makeup and stuff. thanks for any help you can give me. great vids too.
I've just always used 10-10-10 Watch some of the later videos for soil improvement techniques. The commercial fertilizer will help feed the plants but it won't do much to improve the soil, you'll need to do things to improve the soil texture and composition also.
ok. i'll go watch them in a bit. I was going to take a few plaits of plan old top soil and put into the garden to try and loosen it up. then put some potting soil and fertilizer in there and see what that does.
I thank you for you time and wish you a blessed and prosperous day. god bless you.
Great Stuff! I wish I had some property to plant some apple trees and have a decent garden.
right now I have a small raised garden bed and some pots for green bean growing.
Also, thanks for pointing out that there are bird sounds in the back of your video - I was confused at how I was hearing bird sounds at 11PM outside my house. doggone good stereo spekers i have. :)
we are living in the dark ages. watch the BBC documentary 'a farm for the future' to understand why.
pay particular attention to when they mention crop yields of permaculture farming (hint, they are high, especially when in the light of it's energy input which is close to 0). there is a possible future for humankind but it will require a massive cultural shift. the documentary is on google video in full. good luck
rotate the area's year to year and I let clover regrow over places where heavy feeders were as corn or cabage group -I also use peas to help those area's recover - compost and used rabbit bedding straw -the rabbit are great with clean up of trimmings or a trellis full of vines -litter is a excellent furtilizer used very sparingly -the straw slowes evaperation in our very hot dry summers keeping the soil cool and mosit for roots of plants-a few weeds are okay,,sometimes helpful even !!
anyone heard of the three sisters combo,a hopi tradition, corn, bean(pole climbing) squash. the corn is planted first it grows ten inches, then plant the beans, theyll grow up the corn, then once that gets 8 inches, plant the squash, itll provide ground cover and its a nitrogen fixer, kool huh!
you can calculate how much water this holds, maybe only 2000 gallons? that would water a garden ( no rain) for awhile...here in california it would not take me thru a 5 month dry spell...,that said - it is a great idea!
Dont forget about them wild edibles too! You should look into Amaranthus species. They grow like weeds and their grain is a complete set of amino acids! Not only can you eat the grain the leaves are edible too and are very nutritious.
what about using permaculture techniques? do you think that would make corn a more suitable survial crop? For example, planting corn with squash, whose leaves act as a form of mulch and keep the soil moist, and vining beans which fix nitrogen into the soil (since both corn and squash consume lots of nitrogen)
Depends on so many factors like experience, irrigation, soil quality, etc. as a MINIMUM in non desert regions I would say at least an acre- this means more than vegetables however.
We live in what is called high desert and leave the weeds as the hold in moisture and we have found that the plants seem to do better when certain "weeds" are left alone. Our big problem is the majority of tomatoes not ripening before the 1st frost. We're going to try planting more varieties (we have 2 acres) this year and growing all heirloom seeds.
Yay! You mixed corn and beans to increase nitrogen fixing, and even added the innoculent(sp?). In my research about what I could do to increase my suburban garden success, I read about 3 sisters, then innoculents. Then I wondered why commercial corn growers don't do this, instead of killing the Gulf of Mexico. PS: I totally agree with beginning gardening being difficult. Grandparents had huge garden, but I can only grow yard long beans and squash really good. The rest is still iffy.
our time, like the Ram,and Goat prophecy, which talks about the Ram Medes/Persia/Iran,and the Goat(Grecia)/U.S.orN.A.U.,which some say Grecia,is the E.U.,Yet I have strong reason to believe The Antichrist arises out of the U.S.,seriously after Obama, whom I at this point believe to be Palin. Now you may not believe me on this, like I said I am not trying to force you to believe it,just what I have severly experienced, that I would like to share with you, since you are so generous with your knowledge
I appreciate your response, but what I meant about prophecy, was that I have had dreams myself, which I believe was warning me, of things to come. Now,those were others dreams, and in my experience,we are to forsee things to come, like Jesus said,"when you see all these things, know that the end is near, even at the doors",not trying to push anything off on you, just that I believe we are to know the generation, but not the day,or hour of Christ's return, but we are to interpret Daniel,as the events of
Nuked again, resulting in America's demise..All this has been dreamed,in the Bible it is written in the Last Days, men will see visions, and Dreams. There is more in details in between some of these events,I just highlited some, Iran will be nuked to I believe,by the Antichrist, after Obama. Anyways, what vegetables are easiest, and most survivalable to grow, and sustain you ? In your experience..
Alrighty then! I agree that some of this COULD NOTICE THE WORD "COULD" happen, but "no man knows the hour except my Father in heaven.." Continue watching the series, answers to your questions are in later videos, including discussions of gardening in radioactive environments, etc.
Thanks for the Videos, I do believe during the obama Admistration shocking and awful things will happen, 1: being the Collapse of the Economy, 2: Martial Law,choas in heavily populated areas, crime increase, 3: Concentration Camps, forced Labor, abusing people, torture, and genocide. 4: The Rise of the Anitchrist, and the Mark of the Beast(the micro-chip) 5: China attacks the U.S. nuclear, the East Coast is greatly devestated,Russia invades from the North,America fights back, pushs the enemy back,China
Depends on a lot of factors including soil, irrigation, experience, etc. For general planning I would say at least an acre. Some one I'm sure will come along and say how they read that 2 little raised beds will grow all their food. That's how you'll know that they haven't actually done that!!! Remember you are growing enough to eat fresh now AND to put up for the REST OF THE YEAR, like the pioneers did. This is more than just have a few cutesy tomatoes to show off to friends....
Exactly. Thats why Im thinking about how to maximize area utilization, maybe with multiple "shelves" (gotta be careful with enough sun exposure though, though some plants dont need so much as others), also considering hydroponics.. aquaponics..
It's so good of you to remind people of the reality of "just planting some corn and beans." When we lived up north gardening was a lot easier, but here in Florida we really struggle to grow everything. Even seeds in storage won't necessarily grow the next year, so you even have to consider seed storage. And we have to garden year round because there's no "cold" storage. Thanks for the videos--you're doing a really great job!
Great video. I wouldn't worry to much about fertilizer though. I'm sure Monsanto doesn't want anyone to know but human urine contains nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. Dilute it 1:10 with water and you have the worlds cheapest liquid fertilizer. Sounds kind of weird, I know, but it works. Self Sustaining communities do this all the time.
We're growing all our own food next year (hopefully) but we live in the country so it's pretty easy, it's our life. Some town folk moved into our neck of the woods recently and me and my wife went over to greet them. They were busy planting cheeseburger trees, cans of soda, and rows of potato chip bags and wanted to know if they picked the best spots. My wife said to them, "You'll need to rotate those crops every year or else you'll end up with junk food!" Har har hardy har har har har!!!!
A quick thought, you were talking about not pulling these so called "weeds", but you didnt mention that a lot of those plants that grow there are also edible plants and herbs.
You can also "hide" food amongst weeds, I think that was the jist of what I was saying. Are you referring to the asparagus growing amongst the weeds? Thanks for the nice comments.
Grow corn it is easier to hide in when the gorrillas on horses try to net your mutant post-Fukushima ass. No guns or gold are going to save ya from isotopes in soil and rain.

I don`t understand your point of view on the problem, not getting enough amonium nitrat for the plants, if you don`t have chemial fertilizers. Urine is free, and dilluted in to som kind of irrigation system it will sirve perfectly for that purpose. It has been done for thousands of years.
au46tro9 8 months ago
@au46tro9 Perfect example of people speaking out of their own perspective. Yes using just urine might work on a 4'x4' raised bed growing some corn. Are you going to have enough urine to fertilize a 1/4 acre? And being that we are talking about SURVIVAL gardening- are you going to be able to risk the heavy SMELL of that much urine? Think that won't be a security risk? Your darn right that will be a security risk in the PAW.
SurvivalReport 8 months ago
I like your demonstration of the problems created by lack of experience with gardening. I agree crop selection is very important for survival. What crops provide food after some disaster very much depends on them being suited to the conditions you can provide. Sunchoke is a high yielding, pest tolerent and low maintenance crop. Other crops also have potential to crop productively in adverse conditions. I would like to start a charity to develop a seed bank of these potential catch crops.

FishyMoe 9 months ago
If everyone has a victory garden (and everyone should be starting right now as the videographer says) that will reduce the need for people to go robbing other's stores of food. Also plant fruit and nut trees NOW for your zone that will provide a reliable yearly crop of vitamin C and protein even if there is a problem with seed crops. The oil has peaked, so the sooner you get these trees delivered, your gardens planted and the knowledge embedded in your brains, the better off your kids will be.
paulineprojectlove 9 months ago 2
I love the "face reality" aspect of your video's. I practice permagardening. the nice thing about that it is NO need for pesticides or man made fertilizers.
You can even use a "chicken tractor" for loosening soil and such.
What's really great about pg is that it's very, very low maintenance once you get it established. It's really great for those with less than green thumbs as the set up is the hard part, the growing is the easy part.

marcjtdc 10 months ago
@marcjtdc Wow, thanks. I had NEVER thought of that (sarcasm added). Yes of course. ANYONE, ANY PLACE that doesn't keep a 24/7 watch during something happening is a fool. If they make it 150 miles out from the big cities, then find me, then make it through the 4-5 various detection methods, then climb over several fences, avoid the pack of dogs, make it past the lookouts without getting shot, then into the fenced garden areas they can steal a tomato, they deserve it getting that far. LOL
SurvivalReport 10 months ago 4
@SurvivalReport I did not mean to insult. pretty much nobody lives more than 5 miles from another home. So, they will not have to travel 150 miles to steal your crop. If they attack during a rainstorm/full moon, you will not detect them. Your videos are very entertaining mixed with good knowledge/advice. Thank you friend!
marcjtdc 10 months ago

SqueesitPlease 10 months ago
definitely disagree with you on the NOT WEEDING aspect of your plan here. not only do the weeds use up some of your nutrients that you said are SO essential for your vegies growth but having compact and weed filled garden rows is radiculous.

People need to start saving seeds, and even trade them for other seeds, etc. More people growing and variety improves the situation.

Grow beans with your corn. Legumes fix nitrogen from the air into the ground. The corn stalks serve as a 'pole' for your pole beans, as well.

Time separate, early, others, then late sisters.
dawnwinds58 1 year ago
@dawnwinds58 It's called the Milpa system. Used for millennia by the south american natives. Two nitrogen hungry crops and a legume. You can plant whatever legume you wish -beans, soybean, lucerne etc. Typically it is corn mixed with a cucurbit (squash, cucumber or zucchini, melon, pumpkin) and the aforementioned legume. peace

but enough to can, and enough to simply give away to others who's gardens may not have done as well as ours that yr.
Caveman0713 1 year ago
Ok so anyway, my family and I have grown a garden every year for as long as I can remember. They grew their garden every year since they were little and my grandparents on both sides farmed for survival and to make a living selling surplus. I have been gardening for over 20 yrs and the hardest part for me is weeding. You can say all you want about, "ppl who say its easy", but maybe its not easy I'm just used to it. Our garden is 65' by 55' and we have enough for not only us to eat fresh....
Caveman0713 1 year ago
@Caveman0713 That's not what I said. The point was that a lot of people who have not gardened long term think that it will be easy to grow their own food after the fact. The point of the first couple videos was to discuss some of the problems with that theory.
Yes I know the work involved and it sounds like you do also. :)
Never had a problem with cabbage- it's a fall/winter crop down here which might be why we have never had bugs. Good luck.
SurvivalReport 1 year ago 3
@SurvivalReport By no means am I saying that someone can just walk outside one day, churn some dirt and end up with enough food to even take care of themselves, let alone a group of people. But I've been at this for a couple decades now and its been a tradition of my family since before america was even a country. It was Natives that taught the colonists how to survive the harsh climates when they first stepped onto our soil.
Caveman0713 1 year ago
the common survival/preparedness thinking of "when my storage food runs out I'll just grow a garden." Idiocy.

Hi, Your message is right on. Folks just don't realize how much work and learning is involved with being able to grow your own. A decade and your really just getting somewhat capable... That can be hard for folks to believe with this 'instant' everything we've got going. Keep up the good work.
BackyardFood 1 year ago
Well for one thing, if there is a nuclear event..what did not kill all of u right away would leave you weak and diseased/radiation exposure and burns so infection would be a problem also, water and food would be contaminated so there goes the garden idea..the radiation fallout alone would poison everything...now as for raiders, who might they be? government? if gov't there is no way any amt of guns u hoard will defend u from what the military carries...
kokonutbaby1 1 year ago
@kokonutbaby1 Contrary to popular disarmament aka "peace geek" propaganda, not everyone is going to die in a nuclear war... Get educated. Within about a year UV light will be back to similar to now levels. Water can be filtered and of course wells would not be affected in the same way as ponds and rivers. The "raiders" your referring to would most likely be your starving neighbors that also believed they would all die in a nuclear war, yet lived through it UNPREPARED. Education is the key...
SurvivalReport 1 year ago 9
@SurvivalReport I dont know if you're calling me a peace geek or not but Id rather be for peace than a warmonger any day. I am educated and know some things about radiation exposure. Im also a nurse and know alot about wounds, infections, etc. What kind of educational background do you have? No not all die in a nuclear war if only one bomb is dropped (look at the Japanese after the hydrogen bomb was dropped on 2 cities and the awful results)..but who says only one will be dropped or one area?
kokonutbaby1 1 year ago
@kokonutbaby1 I don't mean standard type education, although I have four years of college also for what that's worth. I meant getting past the "we are all going to die" propaganda of the socialist disarmament crowd. Most everything can be survived with proper preparations. Now if folks are "serious" about survival but continue to live in ground zero near a military base, large city or other target areas, well then their preps better include a BLAST shelter also. Not everyone will die...
SurvivalReport 1 year ago
@SurvivalReport You're right. Anyone who's bothered to research the subject knows that after a nuclear exchange, most of the casualties will be due to diseases caused by starvation, malnutrition, and unsanitary drinking water. Yes, just like any other major war affects the civilian pop. Dysentery will kill more in the first 18 months than radiation.

@ttitanic121 2012 will likely pass without incident. What do you think will cause the water to become unsafe? Yes raiders will be a problem for a year or two until the numbers are thinned out greatly. You need solid defensive preps, train regularly and have reliable friends and family that does the same. As to the "pioneers didn't live past 50" if it's a question of living 14 more years or dying tomorrow which one would you choose?

drmodestoesq 2 years ago
I agree with you that if a person has not raised their food for year to year they will not be able to survive from a garden. They may hit a few good years and just make it, but all it takes is one failed crop. You can tell a false survivalist from one that is real. A false one will tell you that you can do it easily; that they have been raising their own food for years and never had a problem. People who actually do raise their own food have had tons of problems they had to learn to overcome.
woodswoman783 2 years ago
i think the best crop would be sweet potatoes or just normal potatoes and carrots and onions
myleghurts100 2 years ago
@myleghurts100 In these parts potatoes, carrots and onions are all cold weather crops. Also they are all considered root crops. Being one "type" of crop you would need to get some other crops in their for rotation of the soil also. If you grow the same thing in the same place over and over you have massive problems with bugs, disease, etc.
SurvivalReport 2 years ago
Def. agree experience is one of biggest factors along with things such as soil and rainfall.

I'm interested to known if anyone has tried a cold weather/winter version of the three sisters garden guild. What vegetables etc
pd94971 2 years ago
Have you tried growing the 3 sisters guild? (along the lines of your soybean idea).
The three plants grow better together than they do separately.
Peas/beans fix nitrogen and use the corn for trellis, while the squash is a living mulch and conserves water by shading the ground. Increased diversity reduces the problem of crop failure. The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) used this strategy successfully over a long period of time.
permalove1 2 years ago
@permalove1 By the time corn will get to a decent size here it's so hot the peas will be done. The beans we usually plants are bush type. We have done this in the past with climbing beans though. It's a good concept.
So many concepts in this sort of thing don't mess together well. For example free ranging chickens. Great idea and we do it where possible. However they will tear up your garden, scatter your compost pile, scatter the manure from under the rabbits, etc. Catch 22 on some stuff.

MrGrower36 2 years ago
Oh yes a place near where I live actually built a huge compost system for septic tank waist now and using it on probably animal feed crops. It's the temp;) I just mean where as livestock manure we don't have to worry about that stuff much.
Well good to know urine is safe.. doesn't make sense we don't put back in what we take out.. and pollute the water in the process, probably humanities largest social trauma comes from that relationship!
Peace!

wild gourd leaves are the perfect bug repellent for your garden. make a sun tea out of the leaf and spray it on the garden a few times in the summer, unlike pesticides it kills nothing but the bugs will now leave your crops alone, less than a 2% damage is my norm,

You can feed the green weeds to your chickens.
If you're short on water it's a good way to make use of the water that those weeds took, plus it'll be a nice treat for the chickens.

PEE is over 95 % nitrogen
donze52 2 years ago
is that safe? I don't know if it would be for any root crops..
on an other pee note in spring start early and gradually make a pee perimeter on tall grass/shrubs away from your crops to keep away smaller animals it may work for deer too depending on logistics of your garden. this especially works if your a meat eater as they sense that your a predator or bigger predator.
Beardedyoungman 2 years ago
we had our garden for 20 years next to the feed lot, with root crops,
just wash off the crops,
Manure has been the main crop fertilizer for many a years, using pee is the safe enough, compared to manure.
never forget dirt its self has bactieria that is deadly as cobra posion. so I wear gloves plus spiders and rattlers have a hard time biting through leather.
donze52 2 years ago
That's opposite of what I heard, that human and cat poop is supposed to be bad or any carnivore and live stock is safe. Maybe it's virus not bacteria to worry about? bacteria lots of common ones are to do with we live in such a sterile way that our body over reacts.
I just heard that's why we don't use our own manure legally. pee of healthy person is actually very clean come to think of it. Maybe your right I don't know. Seems it's good idea for corn though for sure.
Beardedyoungman 2 years ago
better late to the feed bucket than never,
pee is safe, not the other stuff, takes to long to break down, but A friend does that to. I stick to PEE, plus it has all the vitimins you took as the body on average dumps about 80% through pee.
your plants need trace vititimins badly.

If you're still interested in a grain crop like corn and corn isn't working out for you, try looking for OP seeds for grain sorghum.
It's one of the easiest plants to grow and is very adaptable; it can stand droughts, low temperatures, extreme heat, and infertile, poor quality soil.
Another bonus is that it can be popped like popcorn!

You can use grass clippings to add nitrogen to the soil and help keep the weeds down. I have an old man powered lawn mower to cut grass with so I don't need gas or electric to collect grass. Also plant squash in with your beans and corn to shade the soil and help retain moisture.

Do you plant the corn and the soybeans together at the same time, or plant the soy after? Thanks.
goldenscales 2 years ago
The soybeans were largely a waste planting them in with the corn. :(
SurvivalReport 2 years ago
Not to mention the only thing they are good for is nitrogen fixing, for eating they are nearly useless. Full of anti-nutrients, and actually cause all sorts of health problems in both humans and animals. I'm sticking to stuff that isn't likely to be contaminated by GMOs, namely corn and soy. I am going to prefer other grains to corn, it is much too soil depleting. Ever consider non-mainstream grains like buckwheat or Quinoa? I'm experimenting to see what will yield the most with least work.

does fertilizer have a good shelf life? and will 13-13-13 be any good to stock up on?
SPCkeith 2 years ago
Buy the bags that are inside the store- i.e, didn't get wet. The fertilizer will get wet even through the plastic bag. We are rotating 2 year old 10-10-10 and it's working great. I would assume 5 year if kept dry and out of sunlight.
SurvivalReport 2 years ago
cool so ill say 4 years and call it good. about how much would you use for half an acre also what are the advantages of 10-10-10 over 13-13-13 I live in western TN and the dirt isn't great. I'm not new to gardening but am newer for ferts and soil makeup and stuff. thanks for any help you can give me. great vids too.
SPCkeith 2 years ago
I've just always used 10-10-10 Watch some of the later videos for soil improvement techniques. The commercial fertilizer will help feed the plants but it won't do much to improve the soil, you'll need to do things to improve the soil texture and composition also.
SurvivalReport 2 years ago
ok. i'll go watch them in a bit. I was going to take a few plaits of plan old top soil and put into the garden to try and loosen it up. then put some potting soil and fertilizer in there and see what that does.

we are living in the dark ages. watch the BBC documentary 'a farm for the future' to understand why.
pay particular attention to when they mention crop yields of permaculture farming (hint, they are high, especially when in the light of it's energy input which is close to 0). there is a possible future for humankind but it will require a massive cultural shift. the documentary is on google video in full. good luck

rotate the area's year to year and I let clover regrow over places where heavy feeders were as corn or cabage group -I also use peas to help those area's recover - compost and used rabbit bedding straw -the rabbit are great with clean up of trimmings or a trellis full of vines -litter is a excellent furtilizer used very sparingly -the straw slowes evaperation in our very hot dry summers keeping the soil cool and mosit for roots of plants-a few weeds are okay,,sometimes helpful even !!

anyone heard of the three sisters combo,a hopi tradition, corn, bean(pole climbing) squash. the corn is planted first it grows ten inches, then plant the beans, theyll grow up the corn, then once that gets 8 inches, plant the squash, itll provide ground cover and its a nitrogen fixer, kool huh!

what about using permaculture techniques? do you think that would make corn a more suitable survial crop? For example, planting corn with squash, whose leaves act as a form of mulch and keep the soil moist, and vining beans which fix nitrogen into the soil (since both corn and squash consume lots of nitrogen)
AmyPeacemaker 2 years ago
Corn in vid had soybeans planted amongst it. Still required quite a bit of fertilizer.

how much land would you need to sustain one person?
DarthHuru 3 years ago
Depends on so many factors like experience, irrigation, soil quality, etc. as a MINIMUM in non desert regions I would say at least an acre- this means more than vegetables however.
SurvivalReport 3 years ago
We live in what is called high desert and leave the weeds as the hold in moisture and we have found that the plants seem to do better when certain "weeds" are left alone. Our big problem is the majority of tomatoes not ripening before the 1st frost. We're going to try planting more varieties (we have 2 acres) this year and growing all heirloom seeds.
OldTexasHippie 3 years ago
Cut the top of the tomato plants off. It will put all the plant production into ripening the fruit instead of the plant growing more foliage.
EbolaV1rus 3 years ago

ShannCole888 3 years ago
