  • I had a yellow lab named jake... I miss him :(

  • this is one of my all time favorite songs by the pirates of the mississippi.

  • my dogs name is wiley, i miss him dearly i had to do the unthinkable back in febuary last year and have him put down, one of his vertabrate blew out ,while i was working outta town i rushed home, when i got to him he had already rubbed the hide off his back legs from dragging them,i rember the look he gave me after i held his mouth closed so he wouldnt bite vet, like i betrayed him he was put down in his favorite spot,in the back of my truck, sorry buddyglad you went for one last ride RIP ole boy

  • indeed! I believe this song can mean whatever you want it to.

  • At the theater in my home town i was auditioning for a play and the lead singer from Pirates was there. I remember him clapping for me and smiling. I was a little kid then but, i will always remember how good looking he was.

  • my dogs name is jake

  • I remember my sister used to have a tape she made from the radio of a bunch of songs. This was on it. Was my favorite song she recored from the radio. It always had such a great message and such a beautiful song.

  • i guess i used ti o listen to this song everyday when i was around 3-5 & i'm 16 now so its gotta be old lol(:::

  • I heard the reason Eric Clapton named it TEARS IN HEAVEN, was because FREE FALLIN was already taken......

  • i wish that they would have showed the dog getting in the car with the guy and heading home. furthering the desire to please his lost friend by taking care of his other best friend! but its good, makes me cry. I think its a universal thing that i dont care who u r, big, little, straight, gaymale, female, , a nun, or on death row..if u loved a dog,(or other animal) it still tugs at ur heart cause it loves you unconditionally!

  • @looneybun1 yeah...I felt that way about my pet wolverine named Cauliflower...yeah he was a good wolverine...miss him now that he went home to see Jesus...shame about that lawsuit involving a neighbor's foot that he was involved in though....

  • I lost my dog 2 years ago. She was 10 1/2 and was my and my nieces best friend. She was an amazing dog and I still miss her even tho I have another dog I still miss Buttercup but her time was up and had to be put down. This song reminds of her everytime I hear it

  • don't care if its about a dog or not, brings back a lot of good memories. lets just please leave it at that.

  • Nearly 21 years since the release of this song. Time flies. And this song is NOT simply about a dog. If you check the wikipedia page for this song, you will read that Guitarist Rich Alves said of the song that it "means something different to everyone who hears it." Can you guys please stop arguing about it?

  • @kaohsiung99 Finally someone else is smart enought to know what the song is really about!

  • This song reminds me of my mom and her cat bubba. before my mom died she told me to take care of bubba. this song kills me inside cause bubba died and he was kinda like my moms other child. that would make him my brother i miss him so much.

  • This song is about the cruelty and closed-mindedness of the world. In the verses, he speaks of how we all judge each other day in and day out. Then, in the chorus, he reverts to his dog. A dog is a great symbol of someone who loves everyone and judges no one. Gay, straight, homeless, wealthy.... a dog doesn't care. if you think about it this song is amazingly written, possibly one of the best songs ever to be written to this day. its got 2 different interpratations but overall it is about a dog

  • @375Dtrain Good points. I think that "fat" people are judged far worse then all of the others combined... especially here on youtube.

  • @tulsaguy1974 well you have a point but i doubt anyone is gonna make a song about fat people...that isnt full of humor

  • R.I.P SNAP <3 you will be missed boy :/

  • i am a big mother fuka 6,5 280 with tattoo all over. and when i see that puppy my hart melt's.

  • i sing this song on karaoke in bulgaria every year and its a shure sucsess. everybody loves it.

  • The dog is a part of the story, but is a metaphor about life; amazing song, the video kills me.

  • I dont see why anyone would think its not about a dog, since he sings he has been a good dog, and most friends dont feed each other literally. Why cant it just be a good song about a man and his best friend a dog?

  • Once in my early 30s I was in an big city emergency room and they gave me a form, asking whom to notify if I died, and I couldn't think of anybody. I heard this song and understood it. No offense to dog lovers but this man's so alone that at a point in a prayer when you'd normally say something about your wife or kids or parents or even your own soul, he can't think of anything to pray for. There's a pause, and all he can think of is, feed his dog. That's really alone.

  • i remember this song when i was going to greenland school in ar.

  • You know I've never really paid that much attention to the lyrics. Even though it's one of my favorite songs growing up. I always thought it was just about a man and his dog. Now I'm beginning to wonder what it really means.

  • I too cry when I hear this song. The video makes it impossible to hold back the tears.

  • I cannot hear this song without crying.

    Every single time.

  • That's for my two special girls

  • heard this on the radio had to find the video love this

  • having 3 dogs myself , I sometimes wonder if anything tragic were to happen to me..who would take care of them...so this song does hit a little close to home.

  • ive had 3 dogs that were my best friends...1 was hit by a car, 1 passed at 15 from alzhiemers (yes it happens to animals) and right now i have a 4 yr old boxer/lab....dogs are called "mans best friend" for a reason, u will never find a more faithful friend as long as u live...and if u take ur dog for granted, then u shouldnt have animals in the 1st place...love ur dog because its a guarantee that it loves u and will b by ur side at ur most devastating times....MINE SAVED MY LIFE

  • @btnhstillfire AMEN.

in high school i had a teacher that said "Animals are worthless" >:( i wanted to cuss him out, and knock some sence into him. Animals ROCK. I don't know where i'd be without them. I'm a member of the ASPCA. I donate what i can when i can. Too bad the donations dont help catch the ASSHOLES that mistreat the animals too.

  • When I think about this band, sometimes I am a little bit bitter that they never really made it BIG. But after a few more moments I realize that true artists create great art, not money.

  • saw these guys sing this in concert the crowd went wild when this song came on

  • His video is a beautiful video and can be taken in many ways. But I have to say in MY opinion, the lyrics sound like to me that his friend Chris killed himself, and left a long note to feed jake. I think the lyrics are a suicide note and told his best friend to basically take care of Jake.

  • @zombie1478 Interesting thought.

But let me share a little anecdote with you about Jake.

I have a friend in Toronto, a great country singer. Her name is Lindsay Taylor. She was backstage somewhere in Nashville while Pirates were performing. This very friendly dog came over to her to say hi. She asked one of the hands what his name was. He said "Jake". She said: you mean...? He said yes, that's the Jake from the song. Kinda cool to know that Jake was a real flesh and blood animal, huh?

  • make's me cry everytime I hear this song. Such a great song

  • This song just touches my heart; brings tears to my eyes. It is "all the way good". I wish we could hear this kind of music on the radio today.

  • Confirmation:The person who sings this song,(a gentle quiet soul)is most assuredly, the epitomy of music.Truly his music comes from a heart that is honest to his soul,he sings of the inner most travailing journeys of life, and not hidden criteria of social agendas. He is only singing about LIFE.A child would have no problem understanding this song Simply,he is an icon of music, pouring his heart into a song, when heard it is never forgotten.IT IS NOT ABOUT GAY STRAIGHT,OR DEBATE.ONLY HEART SOUL&LOVE

  • This song is great....but it's really about his friend Chris.....true friendship...

  • we had a golden retriever named jake this song is totally him . we would use him as pillow but right up to the end he always wagged his tail never held a grudge just a true mans best friend

  • WOW!!! I'm 21. I remember my mom and dad had recorded cmt on vhs and I would watch it all the time growin up. It was nice to hear some of the old songs. The end of this song still makes me teary eyed. :(..

  • gah!!! i love this song and video!!

  • One of the greatest songs in country

  • My wifes 13 year old rat terrier died this morning. He was a very good dog and he is the reason I got me a dog because he was such a good companion. We love you Toby and you will be missed.

  • my dad use to play this song when I was a much younger young man. this is the essence of country music

  • 8 Peeple dont know what a best buddy is. A dog dont care if ur rich poor homeless gay or not there just there to make u happy wen ur down to keep u warm in the winter wen ur fire gos out to let u know if some ones at the door to fight if needed so....Get a dog ull get the filling like 855 an more got

  • When our Ted E. Bear died several years ago, after being with us for 11 years, we buried him in the back yard with his favorite bandana around his neck and a few of his tennis balls with him. Our Mommy Cat followed us out there, meowing and looking concerned...I think she knew what was going on. One of us had to hold her so my brother could bury Ted. RIP to all of our furry babies that have left us.

  • "If I die before I wake feed Jake. He's been a good dog,my best friend right through it all." My dog died from Parvo @9 months young. He was more then just my dog he was my baby.

  • Mine was a boxer. Her name was B.B. She was small for a boxer and the name seemed fitting. She was my best friend for 13 years. I had to put her down on January 24, 2010. Not a day goes by that I don't miss her terribly. I will see her again, just not yet. Not yet.

  • I love this song so much i named my dog after it>

  • Song*

  • I heard this doing today and it made me think of hawkeye...god bless that fallen service man.

  • Videos like this are why I'm thankful for youtube.

  • When I saw the picture of the dog on the news laying by his masters coffin (which was one of the SEALS killed in Afghanistan) this video was the first thing that came to mind.

  • @1973Veteran You got that RIGHT! I just saw the pics and is exactly why I wanted to see this video! Rest in Peace young man. And forever live your dog, Hawkeye. God bless each and all of you.

  • @1973Veteran I thank of my ole dog Petey when I here this. Had her for 16 years, she past away last spring, so you see I have to wipe the tears from eye's when I think of her, "she was my best friend."

  • what the hell is wrong with these 8 people?

  • Simply brilliant! My dog is called Jake, my best friend!

  • I cry so hard to this song. I really don't know why. Just the...Theme of it...

  • brings back some memories :( but great song

  • at first, me and my father didn't understand this song. But in the end, when we saw the dog we were like;....well i was like; AWWWW *sheds tear*

  • One of the most overlooked songs of it's era.

  • It is simple this song was about being a friend

  • This song still makes me wanna cry. It goes to show how strong the bonds between friends can be

  • i named my Dog jake after this video, this is a real tear jerker for sure!

  • I had a Dog named Jake.

  • Wow the puppy on here looks just like my Amos the same size and everything the only difference is Amos is 8 months old and has stopped growing but he still looks like a yellow lab only smaller at 15 pounds.

  • Thats right by god. This is real country.

  • Why is it that everyone tends to think the song is all about a dog? This song is about two good friends. One friend is asking the other to take care of Jake "If I die before I wake" The other friend is honoring that wish.

  • @Eightupman Exactly. Jake was Chris' dog. At least a few understand the deeper meaning of this song.

  • @Eightupman Sure it is about the friends, but it is also about the dog... 'My best friend, right through it all. If I die before I wake, feed jake.' Why is it that people think a song can only be about one thing? The friends shared the love of the dog. The owner of the dog obviously was worried about what would become of his 'best friend' if something happened to him. It gave him peace knowing that the other best friend would be there.

  • @Songman1964 beautiful thing about the written musical word. Open for translation. Hidden messages or stories are what make them fascinating.

  • @Eightupman the reason everyone tends to think the song is about about a dog is BECAUSE IT IS! "If I die before I wake feed jake. He's been a good "DOG".........my best friend right thru it all!!

  • @cableguy608 Did you listen to the entire song and watch the video or just the chorus? The dog is the metaphor of the song. He represents "the bond of friendship" between the two men. Even in Chris's passing the bond of friendship is so strong, his final request was for his best friend to take care of the dog. But like I mentioned in another reply, it's a song of hidden message that one can interpret as they see fit.

  • @Eightupman maybe because he says HE'S BEEN A GOOD DOG???

  • @MrStReAkErZzZ OHH my bad... I though he was singing, "He's like a bull frog". Metaphors. The dog is the metaphor.

  • @Eightupman Maybe they think it's about a dog because it is. "He's been a good dog..." you NOT get it?

  • @amyelizabethmcguire oh yer right, I'm an absolute retard and can't see beyond the title of the song. My bad for having an open mind/interpretation of this piece of art. Let me get back into my herd of sheeple now.

  • @Eightupman While you're at it, you should get really offended and angry. Oh wait... seriously. Calm down. You have your interpretation and that's fine. Just because i don't agree with you doesn't mean you're a retard.

  • @amyelizabethmcguire if I were any more calm, I'd be comatose. I'd like to think I have more of a life than to worry about a simple difference of opinon on the interwebz. ;-)

  • @Eightupman I dunno... The fact that you've responded twice now makes me think that maybe that life of yours isn't as exciting as you'd like us all to believe ;) To each his own I guess.

  • @amyelizabethmcguire I could say the same about your replies as well, but its all about courtesy. It does still exist, in this case, a response to a message. And smartphones make for great multitaskers don't ya think ;)

  • One of the best songs ever. Miss my big boy, an Aussie Dingo named Yukon.

  • my pops loved this song but he changed jake to bosco for our doggy

  • This song always makes me think about my dog. He was a chow/german shepard mix. We basically grew up together since he was only a year older than me. He died on Thanksgiving right after he turned 13.

  • Sorry about ur dog bouncer bro

  • RIP Bouncer Boo Boo he died last night. He was an old dog. A very good dog. :(

  • I named my dog Jake after this song. About 3 years ago I came home to find he wrapped his chain around the yard swing and got it caught. He was dead before I found him....This is the first time I have listened to this since he died... RIP Jake. I still miss you

  • I LOVE this song ! It brings tears & chills everytime I hear it..:'(

I have been googleling and am trying to find out who the actor was in the video...anybody know ? It looks like Jefferson Moore to me. Help me figure it out PLEASE ? Thanks ! JustWeezie@yahoo.com

  • @Justweezie

That is Jefferson Moore. I used to hang out with him here in Bowling Green, KY. I have not seen him in quite a while...probably since 1995.

  • miss u chloe

  • i dedicate this song to my grandpa who died last week because he had a yellow lab named jake who died 3 weeks ago of old age...i miss and love you grandpa

  • Feed bandit

  • Sounds like a covert left-wing song to me.

  • @toastyhotfirebox

What's wrong with the message of the song? Don't we all have a right to be who we are? Anything having to do with tolerance is always considered to be left-wing propaganda by the conservatives. It's about time they realized we all have the right to be who we are without fear of ridicule or discrimination.

  • lol my we had a cat named jake he followed my dad every where when my dad passed away jake did too the same day and time love ya da and jake miss ya both

  • This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. My brother, who passed away 16 years ago, used to sing this song to his dog all the time.

  • From 3:00 - 3:23, what do you think the lyrics had in connection to the video? Someone give some advice, or input.

  • I miss this band so much

  • Not when u heard this song at the time your best friend died and u tried to call her, and she didnt answer, and u think she wasnt home from school yet, and later u find out that the time the car accident happen. RIP Jessica its been almost 13yrs.

  • Country music has many songs that pay tribute to many different thinigs, but this is one of the few songs that pay tribute to Man's best friend. My dog's name was Chunks, and he was a purebred Border Collie. He was great with kids, and acceptable to strangers. I lost him on February 13th, 2006 to a heart attack. When I was saying my goodbyes, a few cats were stood around me, and a steer watched me bury him. I guess it just goes to show that animals do have emotions, and they feel sadness too.

  • @joshuabrooks21 Listen more closely. The song is about the friendship between the two boys. Taking care of Jake is how the surviving man honors his dead friend.

  • @alamanderflash Whatever...

  • @joshuabrooks21- I buried my dad's dog out on our inlaw's acreage this last winter after I had him put down. He'd been ill for a while. All six of the dogs on the farm came with me, quiet. It was like a funeral procession. They know.

  • @joshuabrooks21 Noone gives a shit about you and faggy dog, queer bait

  • @mikebrown1156 Dude, do you even have a dog? Or, are you one of them city folks who loves cats? Either way, you need help.

  • @joshuabrooks21 What's wrong with cats? I had the same feelings towards my cat as people talk about having toward their dogs.

  • @neiana Nothing. I just wanted to shut that other moron up. I'm sorry if I offended you.

  • @joshuabrooks21 haha thts hilarious

  • @thecourtney7777 I'm glad I could make you laugh. Enjoy your laughter!

  • @mikebrown1156 Too bad the dog died,It should have been you ! faggot

  • @ricephus do you have pets .I would fight anybody to the death about my dog

  • @ricephus what do yuh mean the dog died no i dont?. yuhr dumb

  • @ricephus what do yuh mean the dog died no it dont?. yuhr dumb

  • @mikebrown1156 you need to watch it! leave people the helk alone

  • @joshuabrooks21 absolutely, ive seen it several times!

  • @jasonerling I suppose you're referring to my original comment...

  • @joshuabrooks21 refering to your comment about animals showing emotion yeah. ive seen it in our dogs when a family member has passed, you can tell they know and feel sad

  • @jasonerling Yeah. As a matter of fact, the night before I buried my dog, I was saying a few words to him, and a cat we had at the time put his front paws on the trailer, and then put one of them on the bag Chunks was wrapped in. It's as if the cat was saying goodbye. It was a totally awesome experience, the cat putting his paw on the bag Chunks was in.

  • Missing the 'best dog EVER'. HARVEY!

    She was pretty cool!

  • i love my dog she been my best friend right through everything

  • This video just shreds me to pieces

  • @cjnash3 I know, but yet, it's so heartfelt....R.I.P. Charlie.

  • holy crap jessgirl222 is retarded!!!!

  • Holy crap the 90's were awesomely horrible

  • Some say he's worthless, just let him be. I for one would have to disagree....and so would their mama's............most powerful sentance in the song.......:)

  • @Shew8619 VERY POWERFUL INDEED.

  • Some say he's worthless, just let him be. I for one would have to disagree....and so would there mama's............most powerful sentance in the song.......:)

  • When this song came out, I was a teenager, and my dog, a lab, was named Jake. I've had other dogs since then, all lab/shepard crosses, all with a white chest and white front left paw in memory of him. He was the best. Jacob Xavier (Followed by Jacob Bartholamew and Jacob Jedidiah... I don't know why...I'm strange :) ) I miss that dog.

  • i can hit my finger with a hammer and i'll i do is cuss but this song brings tears to my eyes

  • Buddy was the greatest dog my world has ever known, as your's was to you. He turns 13 this yr. From the time we got him, he was my sidekick. He was able to go to the office with me, travel with me, everything. Obviously, he stayed home when I worked out of my home office. When I went to get my son from high school Wed & came back, my son found him dead on the floor like he was sleeping. My son was devastated. He was healthy up until then. The pain is incredible. He will always be missed

  • My little Sisters Jack Russel/ rough coated Dashcund, Buddy, was hit be a car at 6 months old, coming home after visiting his little girl across the street at 11 o' clock at night. The car that hit him was turning into their driveway, barely going two miles an hour. Buddy was a great little dog. You could take him anywhere. He only weighed 9 pounds! The second you put him in the car he would fall asleep. He was a quick learner too. He had already been started on agility at 5 m. old. RIP Buddy

  • I don't know what I would do without my "Ivan the Terrible" My Dad named him that when we were looking at him as a two month old puppy, literally shaking because he wasn't with his sister. That shivering little 15 pound mutt is now a nearly 70 pound dog, about 2 1/2 feet tall at the shoulder. I think Ivan is a Rhodesian Ridgeback/Lab cross, and he's the best dog anyone could hope for. I Love him!

  • my dog just died today.. he got hit by a car. and i was one who let him outside i didnt chain him uo cause i thought he would come back like he always did but when i saw him i cryed soo long im even cryin now.. R I P Rebble

  • @MegaShane85 so sorry for your loss :( My dog Jake died in 2002 and I still have a box with his picture and his favorite toy under my bed. The pain will get easier to deal with, but it probably will always be there. Just remember the good times, not seeing him like that. He would want you to remember playing with him, not what he looked like after the accident.

  • I sure miss my two labs.

  • my yellow lab's name is none other than jake :) haha

  • the guy that sings this song is my cuzin

  • I cry every time I hear "The Baby" honestly, if I'm driving, I have to pull off the road. I used to sing " Feed Jake" to my dog Jeck. I just changed the name. He would always come into the room where I would play my guitar and sing this. He knew it was his song. He died a few years ago, and it means even more.

  • the three dislikes must be tea party memebers

  • This song is really good I named my dog after this song when i was 2 years old and he was a puppy but now he is up there my dog is now 17 yrs old in human years i had him since 1993.

  • I got to thinking about this song and the video; don't get me wrong, I like this song, but the song has nothing to do with the video. Someone just came up with this heart -wrenching video, but it has nothing to do with the song. In fact, the song really doesn't make any sense. Sorry, it's just a bunch of random thoughts and has nothing to do with feeding Jake. Listen to the song and forget about the video; you'll see what I mean. I honestly do like the song, but it's the video that makes it so

  • @mabdog1988

at the end hes at his best friends funeral who actually had Jake. The singer was Jake's owner, he was saying that if he dies he wanted his friend to take care of Jake. And he did.

  • @lavadots The video never says who the dog belongs to; but the friend that dies seems to be holding the puppy most of the time and I thought he was the owner. I like this song and video; I remember when it first came out and it made me cry. From reading comments, it has touched a lot of people. Interpretation is a personal thing; songs affect people in different ways. I was looking at it from a practical sense; the video tells it's own story. The video doesn't match with the lyrics.

  • white bluff tn

  • I always liked this song, always makes me cry. I also enjoyed reading everyones comments. Some are so serious and sad and some are hilarious! I'm not sure why he mentions being gay and an earring in the song, what it has to do with anything. He seems to be driving along the road to his friend's funeral and just thinking about life and the way things are, you know how the death of a loved one or friend or even an enemy makes you think about a lot of things. Thinking about how people form opinions

  • like the Darlins" on Andy Griffith That song always make me cry
