I volunteer at a 1880's farm just like this, and I really enjoy it. It's hard work, but it can be fun too. I love baking and when I'm in the house, I forget about my real 21st century life and I'm able to relax.
The Klunes were the wrong family to undertake this "experiment". They're a very wealthy family from California that hadn't a clue what a hard days labor was like. That's why they had a still brought in by Gordon's company. This family became the "cheaters" on the show. They could rationalize all they wanted but in the end they cheated, and I think compromised the program and what the producers had intended.
Actually, I think that the Klunes were a great choice. I do think Mr. Klune whined too much, but his point was valid. The rules kept the show from being realistic. Faced with the same situation, I think that someone from 1883 would have done the same thing.
@gsajoe It's an experiement and they are coming in with knowledge of the 21st century. I think their actions showed how tough the lifestyle really was which forced them unto temptation. Especially with two teenagers it must of been tough trying to please everyone. Mrs Klune, nevertheless worked very hard.
@gsajoe the producers intended on creating as much drama as possible so they could film a more interesting show. The clunes were given the same amount of food as the rest of the families which drove them to do whatever necessary to feed themselves. When the game is fighting hunger anything goes as far as the still goes all it was an oven with a modified tea kettle and if i remember my history correctly were around during that time period. If you want to get anal the producers were at fault
