I am looking up the Zipper ride today to let every parent out there know that this is a dangerous ride. My daughter and I had a near death experience on this ride last night. Our door opened at about 15 feet in the air as they were allowing other riders on, thank God the carnival worker noticed my blood curding screams as I was holding onto my daughter trying not to rock the basket. He reversed the ride, and let us off. If he wouldn't have noticed us, we would have died.

@MissScarletMusic You are correct, it could have happened on any ride... but as I have done some research, this ride was not being operated safley by law. It was supposed to have 3 lock mechanisms, and this only had one. So before riding the Zipper, look for those locks! VERY important. Thanks for the feedback :)

@Kateplus8fan I didn't want to rock the cart at ALL. Just the little bit of movement was rocking the cart... my daughter was in utter fear of falling, she completely paniced. She is only 7, if I would have let go of her to shut the door, she would have fallen out. Thanks for the feedback.

@Kateplus8fan OMG hun... that is scary! I wish someone would pick up the Copyright to that ride, and redo it SAFER than these old hunks of junk! I would feel much better about a lock that is a no-worry lock. These things with the momentum that they throw around is NOT SAFE for the locks that are on there.... freaky. I for one, will never ride the Zipper again untill a new one is manufactured... they have been used and abused, and just simply are not safe anymore. Wish I had a million dollars!

@ghostygirlmn Come on please. I don't mean to sound like an a-hole when you nearly almost died, but because ONE ride experience from the Zipper doesn't mean that everyone out there isn't safe. It's just like saying you got in an accident with a Dodge Caravan and the airbags didn't deploy or something and claiming that all Dodge Caravan's aren't safe. Now I am no expert but on Zipper rides, there are two safety devices used to keep riders secured. One is a door and the other is a safety pin...

@ghostygirlmn ... Now the door does not fully lock in (that's what the safety pin is for). And if the door has a certain amount of weight pushing against it, it will open. So in this case, it was more-like the ride operators fault. The Zipper ride has been produced for over 40 years, so if there were problems with it, they would have stopped the production of them and got rid of them at Carnivals. Sorry for your near-accident, but accidents do happen, most of them being the operators fault.

@adamcolvin Thank you for your feedback, I did some research, this ride is no longer available for sale by the original manufacturer. You are correct, this ride is actually supposed to have 3 lock mechanisms by law ...the one I was on, had only one. I did in fact contact the Spencer Iowa Police Department after finding this law out, and the ride was shut down. My sister and her kids went there today, and she said the Zipper was not operating. Thank God.

Just to set the record straight, the zipper is, hands down, the best "mobile" ride on the planet. It will never beat a 4 million dollar roller coaster, but for a stock ride it's unreal. As long as you:

A) make sure you're going over the top backwards (sometimes they don't stop and go the other way)

B) Rock the cart, and let it swing and flip.

I've been a ride junky my whole life, and this is still the best of them all.

Um, no, it's just as intense as it looks. If you get a good car, it's mid-air somersaults from start to finish. It remains my favorite amusement ride of all time. My favorite part is when it looks like you are golng to take a sudden massive face plant into the pavement.... priceless
