I was in Barbados a couple weeks ago, and I didn't see any colourful ZR vans or busses... just the smaller white ZR's (Minivans)... and they get ram up quick.... but cheaper and much more fun than the City Bus.
@nuffaction Partially correct. All public transportation in Barbados costs the same thing whether taking the yellow buses(with blue stripe) , the big blue buses (with yellow stripe), or the small white vans (with red stripe). All three of those are $2 Barbados dollars per ride (which is just US$1). Note though: If take an actual hired car (taxi) that go up to $45 Barbados dollars or more (~ US$23). Or an airport taxi which also are higher than public transport.
@nuffaction there are some bus routes that don't have many or any mini vans (yellow buses); instead, there are ZR vans (smaller, white vans with a red stripe, with sit down room only)... this in addition to the island's transport board buses, those big mercedes benz ones :-)
@nuffaction ..the ZRs are the small white ones, the minivans are the large yellow ones, both are private owned, the large blue ones which includes the city bus are government owned...The government placed a lot of restrictions and regulations on the privately owned ones..including banning the colours, paintings, drawings etc..also the drivers and conductors started wearing uniforms.
Well, as a visitor, I can say that the yellow buses were my favourite mode of transport while I was there. I rode lots of them while I was there and was treated very well by the crews on all of them. One driver even went off his route to take our party directly to a restaurant where we'd made a reservation; we didn't even realize what he was doing until he stopped and turned around (to go back to his regular route) in front of the restaurant. No reputation polishing needed by that guy! : D
I think overall the ZR vans and minibuses are a big hit with tourists, especially the more adventurous ones, I think they are an important part of bajan culture (although ironically enough you'd think it was a transplanted jamaican cultural thing as many of the buses feature jamaican decore, but I have yet to find a jamaican reggae/rasta bus video on youtube) . That being said, there is a lot ZR and minibus drivers can do to polish up their rep with the gov't. Be fun but responsible!
@TdotSoul The ZRs want tourists to feel comfortable taking any form of public transport on the island. People have told me Barbados is possibly the only island in the region where we have a flat-rate transport system. That meaning any bus you take from Bridgetown will be de same $2. Even if you go all the way down by Conneltown area, in St. Lucy (~13-14 miles away) t is still the same $2... And once up there, when you decide to head back to town its just $2 to ride back.
Kolchak1974 we need more ppl like you to show the Governement that not all these buses are bad.....It's good to see the Visitors coming and loading up the pics and vids of our culture our vans...............
