wow.... it all started when gordon freeman was to see what the half-life was on an unknow mineral.... (a half-life is the measurement of how long it takes for the atom of a mineral to decay. this scene from this game shows a great reason not to fuck up when doing so. ) :p

Before that, he was famous for his quest to fix Black Mesa by heading to the lambda complex to fix it. Also, he became famous because scientists overhear them talking about Gordan and how he's causing a massacre. the machine made the resonance cascade becuase of the pure sample you put in ( sample from the g-man) which makes the aliens teleport in. then the combine (another alien race) took over taking advantage of the open portals to earth. So basicly its your fault (well accually the g-mans fault) that aliens take over in HL2....so im still not sure why there so happy to see you....maby that ur still alive or something.
