Brilliant! I'm always blown away by his apparent ability to suspend himself in mid-air at the height of his jumps. He can't be mortal! I have never seen such amazing acting/mime skills in a dancer...thanks for sharing!
This is the piece that won Baryshnikov the grand prize at hte Moscow COmpetition (1969?) -- it was choreographed for him by Leonid Jakobsen and used all his gifts -- line, mime, elevation, softness, powers of idealization, and of understanding the elements of style -- and made his shortness irrelevant. He's "bringing back to life" the great 18th century dancer Vestris, who was famous for all these traits.
believe it or not, he is still performing this piece in 2010!

Nice to see him but his dynamism in the balett is not good. Piruett technical is too weak. For the rugged and spectacular.
Strong massmedie influence - the russian defector!

I was lucky enough to see him perform this live at the Royal Festival Hall in London when he was still a young Kirov star in the early 1970s.
It was a programme of divertissements and this was included.
He had to repeat it for an encore.
Amazing tour - I also saw Makarova.

@1psoas9--Exactly correct! The Vestris in question (big family!) is Auguste, 1760-1842, "le dieu de la danse." Google him for a bit more!

Have watched this several times and yet cannot fathom how this man willed his body to perform as no other has. Mesmerizing.

This piece is the proof: the accusation of him being "just" an virtuose is nothing but ridiculous. The man was really a absurdly talented artist.

Brilliant! There is a story that Baryshnikov, performing this piece in competition, was awarded 13 out of 12 by Pliesetskaya.
