I see D. L. being emotionally open like that and I feel moved as a human being. The teacher could've been white or black, the real deal is that it's a caring person who reached forward with love and made an impact on another person. The fact that the person was white in a time & place when race is so often a divisive thing brings an extra element to this particular situation. The teacher could've been white or black, the real deal is that it's a caring person who reached forward with love and made an impact on another person. I thought Hughley's testimony was very powerful. I was never in a gang, but I know what is like to feel like you do not belong, it is tough. I was a special ed student from kindergarten through 3rd Grade and no one didn't believe in me. It was a heartbreaking experience, but I had a teacher that believed in me, and I will never forget that.

If you guys would stop bringing up race, we wouldn't have this problem. While we've moved beyond segregation, the older generation still clings on to "black this" or "white this." I'm a teenager in high school and we don't do any of that. We might joke about it but none of us ever mean it. Since us kids live in a racially diverse world in high school, we don't see the problem yet you guys are still going at it. Race this race that. Put it behind us. We're above that now.

My kids worked with DL on his sitcom years ago and I was lucky enough to meet him and some of his family members. He was polite and kind and respectful to me and my children. We always felt comfortable around him. DL is a good human being.
