@demorton19 I'm experiencing the same issue and I think you unfortunately won't be able to retrieve your old data back. :o( Your best bet is to try and get your YLOD ps3 repaired, retrieve the data from it once it's fixed, and then transfer your data.
I know it might not make sense to have your broken ps3 fixed if you've got a new one, but it's pretty much the only way to get your old data back. I wish there was another way.
Wow my cousin got a ps3 slim and his stupid bitch poured gatorade on it im jist realizing that i COULDVE FUCKING TAKEN HIS 120 GIG HARD DRIVE!!!!!!!!!! Fml and my stupid fuckin 40 gig ps3
hello, my ps3 always freezes and hangs up and i liked to bring it back to the future shop and get a new one, But how do i get my HDD from my ps3 slim and put it to the new ps3 slim ????
I have recentently backed up ps3 data to an external hard drive will I need to reformat this for it to work on the slim? Will I still need to download the firmware update on a PC? I got the YLOD about 2 weeks ago and my slims on its way.
People Why the fuck Is MY Ps3 Slim Failing With formating At 99% 500 GB Hitachi Hdd !!! imsooo Pistof this is the 3d hdd On firmware 4.00 that iv tryed. just stops at Fucking 99%
i know that fucking console is not faulty. its just LIMIted FUUUUUCKKKK!!!
bad sectors, even if you get that fixed through your PC utility or something, its better not to use that HDD as it WILL fail at some point again and you'll lose everything on your playstation.
So bad sectors Huh .. the hdd drive is pefectly Fine on the pc.. i read some were on a forum that sony dont let us Do Nomore hdd Upgrades since Firmware 3.56..
if that treu. im braiking the shit out of my console.
@Buda2387 It will but its not recommended, most of the time you wont get a noticable improvement, and they run hotter too, so I'd stick with a 5400RPM Drive.
Unless you can mange to get a decent SSD drive for cheap, that would be the best.
one question and please answer asap..can i swap my 120g from my new ps3 slim to my old broke 160g ps3 slim..well the problem with my 160g slim get the blinking red light and auto shut off..so i order new one 120g. now im using the nyko cooling system plus the note bood pad cooling so that's should keep it cool..but can or is it safe to do this?
@jrmauka hey dude i just did exactly what u were asking in this question, and yes it does work. I had to switch my old 160g hdd out and put in my 120g from my old broken ps3 and it worked! cuz my 160g hdd was sooo corrupted that even formatted and wiped clean, it still ran my ps3 SLOW!! even offline, every command wass hella slow. but yea dude it deff works!
is hard drive in the slim slower than than the hard drive in the fat? cuz i was playing soul calibur 4 on my 320gb slim and i notice that it have load time during character creation and tekken load player profile background longer. i remmeber when i was playing on my fat ps3..... soul calibur 4 character creation dont even have load time if i remember correctly. is this mean hard drive in slim is slower than the fat?
hey if my old ps3 wont turn on not due to hard drive issues cand i take the old hard drive out and put it in my brand new ps3 copy all my game data to flash drive then put the new hard drive back in and copy so i dont lose all my game data?
@fojo1979 No, unfortunately. You need to re-format the drive when you put it into the new system so everything will be deleted. The only way to access the data is to do it on the PS3 on which it was created. Same as if you plug it into a computer or anything else. It's annoying. What I did was pay someone about 30 bucks to fix the YLOD on mine (there are plenty of people who know how) and then use that system to transfer my info. I could have used it but it wouldn't last forever.
hi again guys!!!!! could anyone tell my if i swap my hard drive brand (toshiba) with another brand what happens........ it's the same as before or not????
ANYONE Please HELP ME. My Ps3 hard drive is Courupted i don't know how it happen it's just i ones my ps3 and I get a message saying ur ps3 is corrupted u must restore ur ps3 so I restore my ps3 and it takes hours and hours to download but it doesn't go to 100% it's just it probley goes to 50 or 60 % then it restarts again saying I have to restore my ps3 all over again I just need help with this if I get a new hard drive and place it will it say a new hard ware u wish to install ?
If you remove your original hard drive can you put it in another PS3, upgrading from fat to slim as I can't backup or copy some stuff cause it copyright protected
hi!!! i have a question........ i want to swap my hard disk and i was wondering .....the hard disk's brand have to be the same as the latest one??????? ( i had toshiba hard disk and now i'm thinking to put another brand...... )
It turns out that when I switch the playstation on I have to hold it until it beeps twice, and then you have to hold start and select to update. I suggest you add those instructions in the description in case they need to do what I had to. Thanks for uploading though, I found it really helpful.
Hey buddy I need some help even when I download the update on to my memory stick and then put it into my playstation then hole down start and select nothing happens what am I doing wrong?
If I were to get a new ps3 then take the hard drive from the old one and put it in the new one would the new ps3 have all the info from the my old one?
if i wanted to get something on my mates ps3, (i have fat he has slim) could i put my hard drive in? will it fit? then when im done, put his back in and it will be back to normal? no data lost or any corruption?
@stopwhining1 Only use 2.5". The hard drive can be 7200RPM but it is recommended to stick with 5400RPM. The difference performance wise is slim to none. Also, the stock hard drive is 5400RPM so again, it's just recommended to stick with original specifications.
@Dutchley Thanks, but when I said any size, I meant storage size (as in capacity, like 500GB, 1TB, etc) I can use any capacity as long as its a 2.5 inch SATA HDD right?
@MrRv117 you can find one at Amazon, Newegg, TigerDirect, and other places that sell computer parts. Look for a 2.5 inch hard drive. Good brands are Western Digital, Hitachi, and Seagate.
@ZebbeSebbe Seeing as how they all have the same HDD just different versions (bigger sizes etc etc) then yes, unless they decided to take out the HDD and then it wouldn't work....
ok on my old fat ps3 i got the ylod and i took out the hard drive and threw away the old ps3 now i have a slim and dont want to start on it without help can u tell me if i screwed myself?
@DizzyJaWz What ? no just put in the old hdd in your slim then theres a feautre in the ps3 that says back up memory. save all the info from that old hdd on to the ps3 then put the slims hdd back in and use the back up memory option again and all the info will be on the new hdd
@aeroaa2 While that is possible and shaves off a few seconds during load screens, it's a huge waste of money unless saving those seconds it worth the price of an SSD.
@Dutchley dude i was wondering... I wanted to bring my hdd to my friends house , do i have to take out the metal casing to put it in the ps3 or can i just put it in? Btw we both have a ps3 slim :) thanks (in advance)
Thank you for this, my old hard drive died, so I had to shell out for a new one, could not figure out how to make it work before finding this vid... Now, if only I could try and salvage my save files from the old hard drive, it would be great, but I doubt thats possible
@peakugbo Any can be used, but make sure its formatted to FAT32 or the PS3 won't recognize it. You can format it from your computer. But windows won't format anything to FAT32 that's over 32GB, so make sure its under that and you can format it and use it no problem.
If someone can reply me... My PS3 is giving me the red page when i power it up but i can manage how to bring it back to live but my question is. The HDD is dying or is something else? BTW i have the thick model 160gb. Thanks.
Your description helped me fix my problem, I was well blagged when it came up with the error screen, got my 750gb HDD in it now from my old one that died yesterday. Cheers for the video and description!
Thanks for the video, but I have a question regarding the screws. I did this with my old fat PS3 and it was a nightmare to remove the screws then put them back in - some of the screws had actually been made unusable because of the extent of the force I'd had to use to remove them and thus messed up the engraved shape where the screwdriver should fit.
My question is, can you tell me what size screws they are and what the right kind or size of screwdriver is to best remove them? Many thanks.
@mushroomyakuza To find the right size of the screws themselves, I suggest taking a couple of the PS3's screws to a hardware store and find the same kind. I don't know what size screwdriver I used. I just looked at the screwdrivers I had and picked the one that fit.
@mushroomyakuza Just so anyone else viewing this is aware. The screws have probably had 'locktight' put on them during the manufacture process and that's why they are hard to remove. If you strip the head of the screw jump online to find some replacements, cheap as. Just don't crossthread the screws otherwise you are screwed lol
How the fuck did you get those screws out on the HDD cover!? I'm using the correct type and size of screwdriver and trying so hard my hands are bruising and the flippin things won't budge!
@Dutchley I stripped the screws when I was upgrading my 60Gig Fat PS3 to a 500 Gig. It was a nightmare. Till I realized you can use a pair of pliers and unscrew the screws from gripping the screws. If that makes sense. All 4 of my screws are stripped at the moment. But it worked and did the job.
@Dutchley hey I need help please I have that ps3 and when ever I turn it on it says data courupted and says pleas x to fix and it takes about 5 to 7 min and then the screen just shows the background and no words please help
My PS3 is actually messed. (I haven't removed the hard-disk drive or anything) it tells me the system is corrupted so it'll restore or rebuild the hard-drive (I haven't saved my ps3 data to a memory stick or anything like that) and then once it's done I haven't lost anything! Weird.
I have my ps3 slim for 2 weeks . There is no dust or something in my house . After playing deus x i selected system update . A message says Hard Disc cannot be accessed . I restart the console and the problem its gone . Do you know wtf is going on ?
PLEASE HELP. my last ps3 (the 40gb) died from yellow light. ive kept my 40gb hard drive for my new ps3 slim. but when i put it in it says something about how it is the wrong format. is there any way i can manage to get all my save game data off my 40gb? of any way to make it work in the ps3 slim?
Do the older ps3's use the same hard drives as the slim's hard drives? As my older ps3 broke and i had upgraded the hdd before hand to 320gb i believe.
@Dutchley right dude i started my ps3 and it said cannot start correct hard drive not found so now i dont know what to do i dont want to swap it because i dont want to loose all my data and is it the hard drive that is causing all the freezing and stopping and stuff like that ? plz reply soon
@Dutchley Not true I had the 160GB 2009 Uncharted Drakes Fortune bundle PS3 it got the yellow light of death recently after 2 1/2 years of use so my warranty replaced it for free with a 320GB 2011 Uncharted 3 PS3 they let me keep the game, controller, and old 160 HD i was planning on putting in the slim they were sending me but it didn't fit. I guess i'll sell it I backed up all files on my PSP anyway so its ok the PS fat HD doesn't fit in the slim
ssd's are definetely not a waste of money for your ps3 even if the ps3 doesnt allow more than 150mb r/w
It affects gameplay performance in certain games not just loading times. Most of the times its open world games that stream a lot of data as you wonder around the world.
Just look at Skyrim...it lags and stutters like hell on a conventional 5400 drive or even 7200. Put an SSD and stuttering, lagging while streaming is gone foerver...
@elwingy There are some minor performance differences like load speeds and such but SSD are very expensive, especially when you actually want to upgrade beyond 320GB, which is currently the largest capacity PS3 in retail. It wouldn't be worth my money, personally.
@Dutchley I bought a 500 GB Hard drive for my PS3 on ebay for near $100. I don't remember the exact price because it was a long time ago but I wouldn't have bought it if it were near $200.
@gocountry1391 If you pause the video at 1:32 you can read what kind of harddrive he's putting in there now, here is the information. This "HTS545050B9A300 NEW HITACHI NOTEBOOK HD 500GB SATA NEW". I bought it off of ebay also.
to get all your stuff off your current hd you just need to load it all onto an external hd b4 you remove it, then when u have put your new hd in you just load it all back on from the external hd !
First off thank you for making this video, it was really simple in understanding.
Second, my ps3 atm has a 40gb hdd. So you understand that its already full.
So im planning on buying a new hdd ( ww.alternate.nl/html/pcbuilder/productDetail.html?searchClass=harddiskSATA&artno=AABIIJ&cn=1 ) Should this one do?
Dose this void the ps3 slim warranty?

You can replace the HDD with an SSD on PS3s. Will it also work for the PS3 Slim or does the SSD mount slightly differently?

@Edge0fPain You could easily put an SSD in the slim model. It's the exact same as the old model, size and mounting wise.

spunkee311 2 months ago
dose it have to be a special USB or you can use any?
peakugbo 2 months ago
@peakugbo Just any USB thumb drive.
Dutchley 2 months ago
@peakugbo Any can be used, but make sure its formatted to FAT32 or the PS3 won't recognize it. You can format it from your computer. But windows won't format anything to FAT32 that's over 32GB, so make sure its under that and you can format it and use it no problem.

If someone can reply me... My PS3 is giving me the red page when i power it up but i can manage how to bring it back to live but my question is. The HDD is dying or is something else? BTW i have the thick model 160gb. Thanks.
Willo3G 2 months ago
54 rpm is the recommended rate for replacing the hard drive. 54 rpm so it doesn't overheat

Many thanks.
mushroomyakuza 2 months ago
@mushroomyakuza To find the right size of the screws themselves, I suggest taking a couple of the PS3's screws to a hardware store and find the same kind. I don't know what size screwdriver I used. I just looked at the screwdrivers I had and picked the one that fit.
Dutchley 2 months ago
@mushroomyakuza Just so anyone else viewing this is aware. The screws have probably had 'locktight' put on them during the manufacture process and that's why they are hard to remove. If you strip the head of the screw jump online to find some replacements, cheap as. Just don't crossthread the screws otherwise you are screwed lol

How the fuck did you get those screws out on the HDD cover!? I'm using the correct type and size of screwdriver and trying so hard my hands are bruising and the flippin things won't budge!
ILoveIpswich 2 months ago
@ILoveIpswich Just keep trying. They are extremely hard to get out. Make sure you don't strip the screws, otherwise you'll never get them out!
Dutchley 2 months ago

@Dutchley I stripped the screws when I was upgrading my 60Gig Fat PS3 to a 500 Gig. It was a nightmare. Till I realized you can use a pair of pliers and unscrew the screws from gripping the screws. If that makes sense. All 4 of my screws are stripped at the moment. But it worked and did the job.

My PS3 is actually messed. (I haven't removed the hard-disk drive or anything) it tells me the system is corrupted so it'll restore or rebuild the hard-drive (I haven't saved my ps3 data to a memory stick or anything like that) and then once it's done I haven't lost anything! Weird.

Put an SSD and stuttering, lagging while streaming is gone foerver...
elwingy 3 months ago
@elwingy There are some minor performance differences like load speeds and such but SSD are very expensive, especially when you actually want to upgrade beyond 320GB, which is currently the largest capacity PS3 in retail. It wouldn't be worth my money, personally.
Dutchley 3 months ago
@Dutchley I bought a 500 GB Hard drive for my PS3 on ebay for near $100. I don't remember the exact price because it was a long time ago but I wouldn't have bought it if it were near $200.
SI0AX 3 months ago
It doesn't have to be 5400 RPM.. It can be 7200 RPM or even a SSD..
123thepyro123 3 months ago
@123thepyro123 It's just recommended to stick with the factory 5400RPM. Also, SSD's are a huge waste of money if used for a PS3.

Hi,
I have a problem with my ps3, cause it just turns off by itself. And when it has done that then none of the light at showing.
So do I need to replace my ps3 harddisk, and then it won't turn off by itself anymore???
InTheSpotlight2926 4 months ago
to get all your stuff off your current hd you just need to load it all onto an external hd b4 you remove it, then when u have put your new hd in you just load it all back on from the external hd !

Hey hi,
First off thank you for making this video, it was really simple in understanding.
