Yes, Hmong is basically Miao. See the comments of this video if you're interested in the debate about what is what and what's the correct word to use.
it dont matter who we are, and what tribes we are i still consider i'm mong. I pround the way i am. Remember u r Mong. Don't forget who u r. Take sometimes to travels and learn.
@vanlabam wikipedia is a on going informative process, usually when scholars see something that is not correct in it they can or anyone can contribute to make it correct!
I noticed that there is a lot of discussion about Miao vs. Hmong. I encourage people to leave comments here, but, for a definitive answer, please also look elsewhere. I think the answer to the question is more nuanced than can be crabbed into a Youtube comment.
i dont agree that Miao are Hmongs, but I do agree that Hmongs are Miaos, and yes, there is a DIFFERENCE. "Miao=Hmong" is like saying "English=Australians". It's wrong; however, "Australians=English", "Hmong=Miao" is the proper way to say it. I'm referring to you, SXTHAO, when you quoted, "..all miao are hmong, period..." Clearly, you did not major in history.
'miao' is the FOREIGN name used to refer to hmong people, just like 'chinese' is the FOREIGN name used to refer to you know who. we accept these terms to make it easy on you FOREIGNERS because if we try to explain our diverse social/cultural/anthropolic ethnology to you westerners, it would just go over your head (case in point). if you ask a 'miao' person in china where the 'miao' are, they instantly classify you as a FOREIGNER. but if you ask where 'hmong' people are, they treat you as kin.
because of the terms hmong and miao, and the different dialects, many people can't grasp the concept of them being one people. unknown to most people and to hmong, we mirror the chinese exactly. the chinese all know themselves to be chinese, but they also have numerous dialects: mandarin, cantonese, shanghainese, taiwanese and many 'back-country' dialects. many of these are very different like mandarin and cantonese. different dialects are the biggest problems with tonal languages.
all miao are hmong, period. it is the name we give to ourselves. the hmong in china also recognize that the chinese use the name 'miao' to refer to hmong people and will readily admit to being 'miao', just like chinese acknowledge being 'chinese' but when speaking with each other, they use 'hanren' or most those in america use 'tangren' meaning from han dynasty or tang dynasty.
I am interested in miao/hmong culture but people have sworn at each other on youtube a lot about it...can I have an answer:
Miao is a large ethnicity, hmong is a subgroup that live in China/Vietname/Laos. It is just a subgroup like the longhorn tribe. Is any of this correct? Please help me!
From my understanding, what you just said is probably the definition that satisfies the most people. You can use the word Miao in both Chinese and English. In Chinese, there is less ambiguity. For those who need to make a distinction, I don't know how you'd say Hmong in Chinese.
there are 3 distinct hmong dialects in china: western hunan, eastern guizhou and everything 'west' of them. when compared with these dialects, the hmong spoken in america is 80%+ intellegible with the 'western' dialect, 25%-50% with guizhou and less than 25% with hunan. most of the differences is tonal and speed. the general pattern is, the further you move east, the faster and more 'chinese' sounding the language becomes compared to the language in the US.
wel.. the word maio in chinese is barbarian if u guys never knew -_- so a hmong never calls a hmong barbarian.. only chinese korean or japs calls us *Hmong* Maio
I've tried to get a definitive answer to this question before, what is the best word--Miao, Hmong, or something else? I don't think it's accurate to simply say Miao means barbarian in Chinese.
Also, please refer to people from Japan as Japanese in the future.

miao dont mean hmong. than hmong dont mean that hmong are hmong. the name hmong is used for the black hmong, stripe hmong, green hmong, and white hmong. see they have thier own group and clothing. just like all miao
So these are the ancestors of so many Hmong People now residing in Southeast Asia. I am currently researching about my own ancestors and would love to visit those quaint little villages.
Miao and Hmong....thaum ub peb yog it cov...ntawm pog yawg los....tiam sis nyiag pauv niag tas lawm.....tsis yog it cov lawm. Also, just because you are Miao does not mean you are Hmong....Miao has many divisions and subgroups within itself.

Hello, just wanted to let my Hmong people know. Vang Pao just died few hrs ago, due to long struggling to lead Hmong people back to Laos without a success. He was asking Hmong people to continue smoking opium, make more baby, and stay on welfare as long as you can, and wish Long live LPDR. Vang Pao is on the way to hell. bye.
Thank you for your kind words. We know that the writer of your comment will soon be very poor. In fact, we know you can't even get along with your family and friends. Why be so sinful of yourselves? Keep your ass to your alley. Thanks again for your comment, such a learning experience.
Ah ah ! this is Langde village in Guizhou. I have seen this same show live there last July! Very typical village but it became a very touristic place. For travelers: go visit during summer and enjoy the show on sunday!
Yes, this is Langde. And yes, it is very touristy.
Nevertheless, if you have a chance to visit, stay a few days. When I was there, the tourists only came for a few hours each day and left on the same bus they arrived in.
After they leave, life goes on more like you'd expect it to in a village.
mkayly, he is from Guizhou and his dialect will probably be very hard for us to understand. I'm assuming that the majority of us who are viewing this speak the southern Yunan dialect also know as hmong.
yes he is speaking mandarin as mooney47 just said. but even if he was to speak miao, his Gouizhou dialect will be difficult for us to pick up. also "YES" the hmong of laos migrated from Yunan. infact all hmong people around the world outside of china came from Yunan.
He is speaking mandarin, not his language, right? Otherwise I would have understood it better too. I hope more people load up these adventures where I long to visit someday too.
Yes. Everyone in the village is bilingual, Mandarin and their native language. He says, "My name is Chen Yun Jun. I just finished grade two in junior high school. In September I will start grade three at Zhenghua Minzu High School in Kaili."
I don't have much more video. I was only there a couple days, but I originally planned to stay longer. The family I stayed with (whose son spoke in the video) was very friendly.
i so would like to visit this one day
can't wait till i have the money
