Yes this guy is right that more work needs to be done to substitute non toxic materials for toxic materials. But the process of recycling needs to be standardized so that poor countries can make use of ewaste to raise the economy.

Why can't the US be responsible for what it generates? I agree that recycling should be standardized, but is the US ready to do such? Would it be cost effective for the US to recycle their own WEEE? USA in fact generates very little Ewaste. Have you ever built a computer? Did you stick to USA only made parts? If you bought a mother board it may say Made in USA but the componants most definately were not. In fact very little electronics are actually made here in Usa. So you are not an expert. You just like to seem to be an expert. USA ships out it's ewaste for the same reason it ships in E-componants. Our laws and labor rates make it too expensive. Don't blame us. Its the economy stupid!

according to the rational you use to condemn USA as exploitive we are exploitive if we buy parts created in other nations that were made while polluting THIER country. Then we are exploitive when we ship the used products to some third nation whose people wish to salvage the used equipment. But you don't see that these other nations are exploiting thier own resources to create products in exchange for cash. And the places that recieve obsolete e-waste are themselves exploiters.

Call the manufactures of electronic products and ask them to remove the harmful chemicals in their products. I know the Greenpeace website has some information about e-waste and companies who have already pledged to remove the most harmful of toxic substances in their products.

You can also boycott those companies who are contributing to the problems. And, you can be responsible and properly recycle all of your used electronics with reputable recycling firms. There are plenty.

Calling manufacturers will do nothing. Steps are taken in new electronics nowadays through the RoHS directive restricting several harmful chemicals from electronics including lead. Surely more directives should be put in place to further control harmful substances.
