What people forget is that Leon Stickle basically won Game 6 for the Isles in the 1980 Finals. Game 7 would have then been back at the old Spectrum. Could the Isles still have won? Sure. But most likely the Flyers would have prevailed. They were a great dynasty, though.

Nystrom's goal in the second period (I mistakenly said first period in another post), which put the Isles ahead 4-2 at the time, should not have counted--he was clearly offside. It's common knowledge. Now, that doesn't mean they wouldn't have won anyway, but we'll never know. Personally, I don't see the Isles, even then, winning Game 7 in the old Spectrum. Had it not been for Stickle's blown call, the Flyers would have won the Cup in 1980, most likely.
The goal you are referring to was the game winner and always mistook as the goal that was offsides. Goring was offsides when he took the back pass from Gillies, then hard passed it to Sutter to make it 2-1. Nystrom's goal to win the game was about 5 feet ONSIDES, not off. The only other goal that was disputed the entire game was Potvin's goal that the Flyers thought was a high stick because he batted it out of the air.
I admit I made an error there, but I wasn't referring to the OT winner. (People forget Nystrom scored two in that game--he had a goal in the second period. That was the one I was referring to, and I was incorrect.)

Gillies was onsides when he crossed the blueline, it was the back pass that Stickle missed, which Goring got to when it clearly crossed the line and out of the offensive zone. Moose Dupont also got caught looking when he should've been skating, one of the reasons why Nystrom was way open going to the net.

It's common knowledge. Now, that doesn't mean they wouldn't have won anyway, but we'll never know. Personally, I don't see the Isles, even then, winning Game 7 in the old Spectrum. Had it not been for Stickle's blown call, the Flyers would have won the Cup in 1980, most likely.

You are about to make another mistake.
The goal you are referring to was the game winner and always mistook as the goal that was offsides. Goring was offsides when he took the back pass from Gillies, then hard passed it to Sutter to make it 2-1. Nystrom's goal to win the game was about 5 feet ONSIDES, not off. The only other goal that was disputed the entire game was Potvin's goal that the Flyers thought was a high stick because he batted it out of the air.

I admit I made an error there, but I wasn't referring to the OT winner. (People forget Nystrom scored two in that game--he had a goal in the second period. That was the one I was referring to, and I was incorrect.)
I was right the first time--and you were right just now--in that it was a first-period goal after all. Goring from Gillies. (I looked it up on Wikipedia--bad move--and they said it was the first Nystrom goal, in the second period.)

Um, buddy: I replied to YOU. That's not "talking to oneself." I understood perfectly what you said, and I know the refs aren't perfect. So what. It doesn't change the fact that it happened. Most blown calls don't adversely affect the outcome of a game like this one did.
Did Peeters give up on the play? No, but you know who did? Brian Propp (he said so in an interview). Now, he shouldn't have, but had Gillies not been offside, the Flyers would have had one more backchecker.

Gillies wasn't offsides, Goring was. Gillies was onsides when he crossed the blueline, it was the back pass that Stickle missed, which Goring got to when it clearly crossed the line and out of the offensive zone. That goal was bad, I admit that, but it wasn't Brian Propp to gave up on the play, it was Bob Dailey. Moose Dupont also got caught looking when he should've been skating, one of the reasons why Nystrom was way open going to the net.

there it is, seeing the ''islanders'' winning the first of four stanley cups, must have been a memorable moment. the ''rangers'' failed to overthrow the islanders and the rangers had to stop the ''islanders'' in the late 80's. with coach ''al arbour'' behind the isles' bench, he can make these ''islanders'' win up to ten stanley cups(but when wayne gretzky's oilers derailed that dream).

Mike Bossy I didn't mention because Mike Bossy was had by the Isles because of the stupidity of 12 other clubs. Most notably the Rangers who skipped over drafting Bossy not once, but twice and took Duguay and Lucien DeBlois instead. Torrey if anyone gets main credit, but because they aren't front and center every game they are forgotten and I always thought that was a real kick in the teeth.

That isn't the main reason why the Isles won those cups. It starts with Torrey, he if anyone gets the main credit, if not for him Arbour doesn't come on board, if not for Long Island being Long Island Arbour doesn't come to the Isles. Then there are Torrey's scouts, the ones that told Torrey to take Billy Smith and kept Trottier literally hidden until the 1974 draft. Then there is Bobby Bourne who Torrey stole from Kansas City for a conditional draft pick that became useless Bart Crashley. Then there is John Tonnelli who was taken by the Isles from the Aero's and because Gordie Howe told Torrey that the kid was a tireless, blood and guts type foot soldier on the ice and he should sign him.
