I always admired the British civilization, the British inventive talents and the British behaviour and attitude when it comes to endeavour, suffering and defeat. My special field of interest was the Royal Navy for a long time, beginning with Captain Hornblower and all the books of Alexander Kent when I was young. Later on I occupied myself with naval history and the role of the Royal Navy in particular. There are few Brits who know more about this topic.

I did not know for example that the V2 rockets were still falling on London when Dresden was attacked. I did not know about Mitlebau-Dora. The only concentration camp that I ever visited was Belsen and I was very young and very naive at the time. The work I was doing was exciting for a young Scottish country bumpkin.

I have worked in Germany and have many personal relationshis with Germans between the ages of 30 and 85. NONE of them express the historical revisionism, the defense of what Germany did in WWII, or the hatred for America or Eisenhower that is expressed here. One close friend's father was a commander under Rommel and he certainly does not have these opinions. Clearly there are many Germans who feel they must try to change the past by emphasizing Germany's suffering.
And our fathers are also the ones who felt terrible about bombing German, French, Belgium, Polish, etc. cities where they knew civilians were killed. 10s of thousands of civilians were killed in those places, caught in the horror of war. @smoochym In the early 1920s the RAF bombed Arab and Kurd villagers in Mesopotamia (Today's Iraq) using white phosphorus.
Young Arthur Harris has written his Mesopotamia Memo on the event pointing out that a handful of bomber aircraft could easily burn down several villages in 45 minutes and kill 1/3 of the population, pointing out its effect on "morale".
This was already against The Hague 1907 and essentially similar to RAF's later bombings.

Douhet's most faithful follower was Hugh "Boom" Trenchard from the RAF: the "police bombings" of Mesopotamia (a memo written by young Harris 1924) were "morale bombings" with civilians killed by white phosphorus.

Hitler signed a treaty with Russia, then invaded them.. The Nazis were the first to bomb civilian targets.. FACT.. its nothing to do with hating Germany but the Nazi ideology. There was no plan to "eradicate" Warsaw. The Polish army had retreated to Warsaw - Warsaw henceforth was packed with the whole Nation's army and thus making Warsaw a Nr. 1 military goal.
Hitler gave the Polish army over 5 offers to surrendeer and hand over the city in peace. Had the Poles agreed, not a single house would have been destroyed and not a single civilian harmed. I am sure you were never taught that at school, were you? And guess what: Neither was i.

You were in the Bundeswehr? Tank regiments from the Bundeswehr used to come to Castlemartin in Wales every year. When I was stationed in the local military HQ I was 'Verbindungsoffizier' because I could speak reasonable German then. In fact the staff could mostly speak quite good English.

War is evil but sometimes it is a very necessary evil. Would it have made sense to leave the Germans free to carry on with their Death camps and Einsatzgruppen? Think of Belsen, Buchenwald, Sobibor, Mittlebau-Dora, Dachau, Theresienstadt, Auschwitz, Belzec, Amersfoort, Soldau, Ravensbruck, Osthofen, Treblinka, Ohrdruf, Sajmiste, Oranienburg, Sachsenhausen, Niederhagen, MEchelen, Malchow, Klooga, Le Vernet, Jasenovac, Hinzert, Kaiserwald, Kauen etc. No-one was as bad as Germans in WW2. There was no Oswiciem in 1939, no Einsatzgruppen, just one single Concentration Camp in Dachau, well known since 1934. All the atrocities of WW II could have been avoided, but this was not intended. The intention of the war criminal Churchill and is gang was the total destruction of Germany, the annihilation of the German workers and a new British dominated post war order in Europe.

I always admired the British civilization, the British inventive talents and the British behaviour and attitude when it comes to endeavour, suffering and defeat. My special field of interest was the Royal Navy for a long time, beginning with Captain Hornblower and all the books of Alexander Kent when I was young. Later on I occupied myself with naval history and the role of the Royal Navy in particular. There are few Brits who know more about this topic.

The next came when my family had reached the Western part of Germany, when I was a young lad I hanged around with GIs and their families, translating for them and repairing their cars. I did not know for example that the V2 rockets were still falling on London when Dresden was attacked. I did not know about Mitlebau-Dora. The only concentration camp that I ever visited was Belsen and I was very young and very naive at the time. The work I was doing was exciting for a young Scottish country bumpkin.

In the middle of the fight for survival, all means become reality. We can see horrors perpetrated by all sides, but in sum it is a matter of degree and intent. We are 65years past this now, and hopefully all people would forgive the other side. But to be sure, the lesson should be that citizens of the world should be weary of letting the wrong people get into power. America made a big mistake with Bush, no doubt. But still his name is not used as a reference standard for evil as Hitler's.

I have worked in Germany and have many personal relationshis with Germans between the ages of 30 and 85. NONE of them express the historical revisionism, the defense of what Germany did in WWII, or the hatred for America or Eisenhower that is expressed here. One close friend's father was a commander under Rommel and he certainly does not have these opinions. Clearly there are many Germans who feel they must try to change the past by emphasizing Germany's suffering.

Most American veterans don't like to talk about what they saw happen to their comrades or enemies. 25% of Americans fighting in the "European theatre" were of German extraction. Eisenhower was too. There was no racial conspiricy to wipe out the Germans.

For all you Germans who think that Americans others don't know about Dresden or Hamburg, you must be too young and uneducated to even know about the 1969 book and movie Slaughterhouse 5 which hihgly publicized the firebombing of civilians in Germany. We know all about that. Our fathers were the ones who took German prisoners who are the fathers of my friends. Go ahead and hate America, but remember Germany would not have survived AT ALL if it were not for the American post war support.
