What a stupid concept. You'd think that a bunch of people, stranded on an island, when making a freaking FLYING SHIP would use that to go back home. ... Why would you even make a flying ship?! Just a ship is fine to get back home!!!
That ship would break up way before they reached "escape velocity" and if it somehow held together to reach space it would implode, sucking everyone's insides out of their bunghole. If it did withstand the vacuum of space, it would no doubt burn up during re-entry. Now if it didn't burn I highly doubt there is any type of parachute (or any other way of slowing it's descent) so it would smash into earth, obliterating all inside. I call BS on this whole thing. No way they went into space.
lol wow, never saw this cartoon, but I used to watch the original show and even as a kid I would think man this is getting repetitive. This cartoon just takes it to a new low of beating a concept to death.
It always irritated me that the almighty Tina Louise couldn't be bothered to put her friggin' voice on a cartoon. Yeah, it was crap, but , c'mon. What earthshaking project was she working on at the time?
Bob Denver also did a live action show called Far Out Space Nuts, where it was the same premise again as Gilligans Island and Dusty's trail. Only Chuck Mccan replaced the skipper! Bob Denver accidentally launches the space ship, when Chuck Mccan says Lunch, not Launch! Bob Denver could never shake his Gilligan roots!
At least it seems the opening lines were constructed in the common ballad, just like its predecessor (Meaning you can sing the lines to the song perfectly.)
So where the hell did they get a star chart map that had "Gilligan's Planet" on it? First, that would have to have been charted by humans, and second, well, THEY'RE IN A @$#!ING ROCKET. I would sooner believe a sentient coyote chasing after a hyperactive bird with a thyroid problem than this crap. Granted, it's cool as shit, but it's still so unbelievable I think you'd have to drink six glasses of chocolate milk and wash it down with some candy bars before you could start to watch the show.
Right On! Always bugged me when people asked that question! The Minnow flew into a million pieces in that episode...nothing to fix!! The Professor was a genius :)
I could go on about facts but I have to finally agree that the cartoon represents what made the original so popular, Pure escape-ism! If you look to the right side of this screen you see many attempts by filmation to jump in on other current shows like dukes of hazzard , happy days and mork and mindy. gld they decided to try it. no one else did.
If you have the ability to build a spaceship to leave the island you are stuck on, impossible as that may seem, why in the name of holy fuck would you leave the planets atmosphere with the dick who caused the previous ship wreck in the first place?
I know this is a cartoon but at least there was a reason they were stuck on the island!
@SWASHMAG How do you know Gilligan caused the shipwreck? That was never explained in the show, I always thought they got caught in a storm and went off curse due to the wind and high tides.
This brings back such happy memories for me. Only ever saw it as a Spanish dub on satellite, yeeeeeeeeeears ago, without any idea of what was being said, but did that matter? Not at all. Ah, to be young again... thanks for the upload.
@Attila709 Probably the saddest thing in all three incarnations of the show. (this one, the original cartoon, and the live action series.) IF this show were made now, Gilligan and Ginger would hook up, and Mary ann and the Professor would have as well.
At least the Howes were married before the minnow incident.
With any luck, maybe they will release this on DVD when the new Gilligan's Island movie gets released (if i t spawns enough of an interest in Gilligan's Island stuff). I'd like to see "Planet" as well as "The New Adventures of Gilligan's Island" both released on DVD.
@ZyxthePest The actor's probably had a blast doing this. They all signed on willingly (excluding Tina Louis of course) and this was the second animated series based on the original show. The actors also did the voice acting for the first animated series, so if they didn't like that then they certainly wouldn't have gone for a second series.
That's right people, the Professor couldn't fix a hole in a boat or build a transmitter so they could be found, but he sure as hell was able to build a fully functional spaceship with FTL travel out of basic island materials...................... Obviously he's trying to get back to his home planet
@astrosteve -- I did a joke in my series about this same thing...a character watches a (thankfully fictitious) show called "GIlligan's Time Machine" and wonders why, if the Prof can build a temporal portal out of stuff found on the island, he can't fix the got-dang boat. I mean, they had a stage for performing, which is really just a glorified raft...and don't get me started on the pedal-powered bamboo car...!

"We built a little spaceship...It's crude, but it could fly...!" I love hearing Russell Johnson's voice. And hearing Jim Backus and Alan Hale reminds me of how much I miss them. A flood of happy memories just hearing the intro to this silly cartoon!
@johnalang The rocket fuel is easily explained. If you review the history of Gilligan's Island, you will find that almost anything can be synthesized from some combination of coconut product and things found in the Howell's luggage. As for the vacuum of space and coconut trees, maybe NASA should forget the heat shielding and use wood on their next gen spacecraft.
Tina Fey is a writer for SNL, you are thinking of Tina Louise and yeah that's what I heard also. She thought the show was about her, even though the title was Gilligan's Island, not Ginger's Island
Oops, my bad. I knew it was Tina and a last name that could also be a girl's first name. I'm sure Tina Fey is actually pretty nice, unlike a certain ex-governor she plays. ;)
It takes Nasa 10 billion dollars just to get to the moon, and yet 7 idiots on a desert island can build a space craft capable of galactic travel using some scrap wood and palm leaves. BRILLIANT!
HA! OMG i remember bits and pieces of this from childhood. The sad thought ws that the professor couldn't build them a boat to get off the island; he had to build a damn spaceship and they STILL got stranded somewhere. LOL
The name of the show was Dusty's Trail, starring Bob Denver (Gilligan). There was another shortly before or soonafter called The Good Guys starring Bob Denver and Herb Edelman.
How many times have the castaways tried to get off the island only to have Gilligan fuck it up for them! They should have killed his ass a long time ago!
anyone else notice they showed Gilligan running to the ship in the beginning. maybe a tip of the hat to when he was almost left behind in "the castaways on gilligan's island"
ah el planeta perdido de gilligan! que safada continuacion para la isla de gilligan ese profesor si se paso de lanza crear una nave para escapar de la isla pero kien iva pensar que esta volaria mas haya del planeta tierra! I LOVE IT GILLIGANS PLANET!
When tina complained cause she wasn't the star of the show, sherwood pointed out that the name of the show was Gilligan's Island. so that should have been her clue to who was the star of the show.
Gilligan's Plant was cool enjoyed watching it as wellas "The new Adnvetures of Gilligan" couple years before. One thing I don't understand is why years latter a actor or actrees complain and moan how they hated the part they played on TV...like Tina Louise did or Robert Reed did on Brady Bunch. My question is why adution for the part if they don't like it, pretty stupid to me.
Tina auditioned under the mistaken impression SHE was gonna be the star. She was pretty pissed off when reality dawned she raised a fuss. But her contract required her to finish the series. So in her case she apparently didnt know what she was in for. I think she just veiwed Ginger as just a job, not the defining point of her career. So she had no reason to hate it at the time she took it.
Isn't going down in history as Ginger better than not going down in history at all?
Folks like Leonard Nimoy and Adam West initially tried to distance themselves from Spock and Batman.
But both admitted they became lots happier when they finally embraced the fact that people were going to remember them PRECISELY due to those roles.
Look at William Shatner.Whatever you may think of him as an actor, he's confident despite his typecasting and isnt afraid to poke fun at himself. He's embraced his lot in life and he looks like a guy whos all the better for it.
Adam West got cooler when he embraced Batman. I love it whenever he plays a massive caricature of himself, like on Family Guy. I gotta respect a man who can do that and have fun with it.
And despite that both had a future with other projects. Shatner went on to do TJ Hooker and recently Boston Legal and Nimoy became a talented director with Three men and a baby and The Good Mother.
lol, They could have used the rocketship to get off the Island to get to the Mainland. (which would be Hawwii? if I know Gilligans Island) Other than building a rocket to get to another planet lol,
Either way it was a creative cartoon and it was good from the epiosodes I recently saw.
I think they were trying to make a suborbital craft with the intent to get back faster and they hit a freak wormhole.
Remember the live-action episode where a space capsule landed in the lagoon and then blew up? Im guessing the Professor managed to salvage parts from it to build this. Along with other bits of machinery that were want to wash up on the island. A Hell of a lot of weird-ass stuff has washed up on their shores over the years.
Would this happen to be a later rerelease or something? I had always remembered HeMan, from the following season (1983) to be the first where Prescott had left, and it was just Scheimer's signature, instead of the familiar rotating credit. (along with the new logo, as well). I did loosely watch this, and I can't see why I wouldn't have noted this if it debuted like that.
No, actually it was on CBS (Gilligan's old network) from September 18, 1982 to September 3, 1983 for only 12 episodes. It turned out to be the last cartoon Filmation Associates produced for Saturday mornings.
Ther was a remote possibility of a lawsuit if the likeness of Tina Louise was used in this cartoon, as she was not a participant in it. The series wasn't very good, but it was worth watching just to hear Russell Johnson, Alan Hale "and the rest" one more time.
On "The New Adventures of Gilligan's Island" her hair was white too! From what I understand from interviews, Tina Louise(t.v. Ginger)wanted to distance herself from anything that had to do with the show at that point, so producers of the cartoon show changed the look of the character completely. Dawn Wells voiced both Ginger and Mary Ann in this version but Jane Webb voiced them both in the "New Adventures" series in 1974!!!
I know this was fun back in the day, but if they couldn't build a damn boat to get off the island, what makes you think they could build a spaceship? lmao
No, though I wish it was. I captured this intro off of an old tape I have. This particlar episode ("Let sleeping Minnows lie") had a limited release as a VHS rental, and I bought a used copy of it several years ago. I have several other episodes also, that I recorded in 1982 when I was seven. As you might imagine, the quality on a VHS tape that old isn't so great.
What are they doing in space!?
And Ginger is no longer a redhead.

Back then you could get the original cast's voices like when thye did Star Trek. Nowadays they find somebody that sounds like them for less money.

Why didn't they build a boat instead?
ChuckRoast14 2 years ago 2
Because the professor cant seem to repair the minnow, so why should he make a boat?

anyone else notice they showed Gilligan running to the ship in the beginning. maybe a tip of the hat to when he was almost left behind in "the castaways on gilligan's island"

When tina complained cause she wasn't the star of the show, sherwood pointed out that the name of the show was Gilligan's Island. so that should have been her clue to who was the star of the show.

Was this done by the same people who did Mission Magic. Looks the same. And Brady Kids?

Yes to both answers.

How weird is it that I saw Gilligan's Planet before I even heard of Gilligan's Island, as a kid? (I'm 32 now.)

Listen to a line the Millionsire's wife said in the opening theme; We left for home and lost our way between the stars and sky.

I've got a brilliant idea for a new show: The Brady Bunch in outer space
ionosphere1 3 years ago
damn it! you beat me to that masterpiece of an idea....

Brady Bunch sucks. Besides they already had a cartoon.
And it wouldnt work. At least with Gilligan the stranded theme is consistent.

Astraldragon1 3 years ago
Tina auditioned under the mistaken impression SHE was gonna be the star. She was pretty pissed off when reality dawned she raised a fuss. But her contract required her to finish the series. So in her case she apparently didnt know what she was in for. I think she just veiwed Ginger as just a job, not the defining point of her career. So she had no reason to hate it at the time she took it.
Isn't going down in history as Ginger better than not going down in history at all?

Isn't going down in history as Ginger better than not going down in history at all? Dude, you nailed it right there.

I would love to see the closing credits from Gilligan's Planet when it ran on CBS from 1982-1983 after just one season!

This show was a little before my time. I remember saturday supercade on cbs sat morn. the following year. I was only 4 years old in 1982!

lol, They could have used the rocketship to get off the Island to get to the Mainland.

Seriously? Maybe it was the Lost island...

ETBX1 4 years ago
No, actually it was on CBS (Gilligan's old network) from September 18, 1982 to September 3, 1983 for only 12 episodes. It turned out to be the last cartoon Filmation Associates produced for Saturday mornings.

wow, I had no idea this show existed!! Why did Ginger have white hair? When was this on?
starkid77 4 years ago
Ther was a remote possibility of a lawsuit if the likeness of Tina Louise was used in this cartoon, as she was not a participant in it. The series wasn't very good, but it was worth watching just to hear Russell Johnson, Alan Hale "and the rest" one more time.
earthstrider3650277 4 years ago
On "The New Adventures of Gilligan's Island" her hair was white too! From what I understand from interviews, Tina Louise(t.v. Ginger)wanted to distance herself from anything that had to do with the show at that point, so producers of the cartoon show changed the look of the character completely. Dawn Wells voiced both Ginger and Mary Ann in this version but Jane Webb voiced them both in the "New Adventures" series in 1974!!!

I know this was fun back in the day, but if they couldn't build a damn boat to get off the island, what makes you think they could build a spaceship? lmao
acolecobob 4 years ago
awsome where did you get this? Is it out on dvd?
ruhrho 4 years ago
No, though I wish it was. I captured this intro off of an old tape I have. This particlar episode ("Let sleeping Minnows lie") had a limited release as a VHS rental, and I bought a used copy of it several years ago. I have several other episodes also, that I recorded in 1982 when I was seven. As you might imagine, the quality on a VHS tape that old isn't so great.
