@MegaVolcano - The red thing is a silhouette of an old-style television camera. The viewfinder is at the left, and the long thingie on the right is the lens.
@MegaVolcano never understood why the conestoga wagon, mountains.... It's Richmond, Va.. sheeezzz Who was that real old guy that used to do opinions??
I remember when we got channel 35. That gave us a grand total of 4 channels. That was like getting cable. They even showed cartoons on weekday afternoons! lol Funny how big of a deal that was at the time. And we didn't even own a color TV.
Now that is anchient history! Since I live here in the Ricmond area, it brings back alot od memories (including the Tower). On the sign-off/sign-on things, I believe they only happen for maitenance for many stations. only some smaller stations have sign offs these days while larger ones run 24 hours a day.
Hi there! Thanks for commenting. Is it the very same sign-on tape, Pioneer ID graphic, Seal Of Good Practice and all? Is there a way I can get a recording of this, for I'm unable to pick up these stations as I was once was able. My rooftop antenna was damaged by a windstorm about 15 years ago and was taken down and never replaced. Thanks!
WTVR no longer does sign-offs however, those graphics are used in slates for commercials that they produce and the tapes are archived(well they were the last time I checked) in the staions tape library. Oh you shoul probably go ahead and get a new roof-top anttena that can recvieve digital uhf freq's(avg. max range is 100 miles)
Not in the Northern VA region. To be frank, unless a station is in a REALLY rural area, or is terribly strapped for cash; then they won't sign off after the late 80s-early 90s.
I also remember several other stations where I got my Before/After school and Saturday Morning Cartoon fix that slipped away, there was Channel 65 WZXK, and another one that was Channel 27 in Portsmouth VA I forgot what the letters were
WZXK TV 65 was awesome. It ran Star Trek The Next Generation NEW, War of the Worlds and a bunch of other syndie shows. Unfortunately, it was sold and shut down during a show one afternoon. They just flipped off the transmitter the moment the deal was final. All programming went to rival WRLH-35. Richmond did get another station, many years later; channel 63. I live in the Richmond area now and cannot tell you its current call letters. It used to be WUPV, when it was a UPN station.
Channel 27 in Portsmouth was owned, at one time, by Pat Robertson. It's calls were WYAH. On many cloudy and rainy days, I could watch this channel in Richmond. When it was not airing Robertson's religious programming, it ran a bunch of syndie stuff, including the original Trek and Space:1999, I think. I'm not sure what it broadcasts now, it might be a 'myNetworkTV' affiliate.
@geogray1 Channel 27 In portsmouth is Now WGNT and is A CW Affilate. on an ironic note, that station is now a sister station to both WTKR in portsmouth, and this station (WTVR).
I was born in Petersburg, raised in Prince George up to the time this comment comes through. It's very interesting to see how much TV stations evolved when you've lived in the same area for at least 15 years.
For 35 years I've wondered; what the hell is the red thing floating above the pioneers with the antenna hanging down? A satellite?

Does WTVR-TV channel 6 still do sign-offs? I was on their website and no listing or indication of them doing sign-on's or sign-offs.
Nadav34 3 years ago
NO they do not they just show infomercials
DCASOI 3 years ago
Are there different cable channel numbers for WTVR-TV, besides the actual channel six? Like, do you have to turn to cable channel 3, 5, or something?
gsnman 3 years ago
no just 6 on all cable systems and satilite systems
DCASOI 3 years ago
Ok, just wondering...thanks!
gsnman 3 years ago
surprisingly, they are still using this old sign-on memo up to this very day.
