Byzantine did not exist as a name. The Empire was the (Eastern) Roman Empire. It was a multinational Empire that included even fierce enemies like Bulgarians.
The Byzantine army was majorly Minor Asians, especially from the center and east. Armenians had been the majority of officers (and thus had many Emperors).
However, the navy was traditionally a Greek industry. Thus in this case indeed we are talking about a Greek ship.
i actually found out after watching it... the Black Sea... it is not the red sea... Black Sea's unique anoxic properties below 200m helped the ship to be preserved.
I actually recall reading the realted article at national geographic... the ship is located off the Black Sea Coast town of Sinop in Turkey.
I wouldn't be surprised if Black Sea has many more well-preserved shipwrecks. They gotta keep lookin
1: The battle of Manzikert and it's consequences, which destroyed almost all the eastern army of bizantium. Nearly 200.000 men.
2. The struggle for Power bettwen the burocrats of Constantinople and the anatolian nobility and military...
There was certainly a lift up on the reign of the Comneno dinasty but later, the fall of Constantinople on the 4 crusade and the civil war of th XIV century were the complete decadence...
2. Your second point is 100% correct. Amazingly you got it right between bureaucrats like Komenii (intermarried with Italian families too!)
1. But your first point is out of reality. 200,000 was not eevn the huge army of Justinian! Byzantine army was usualyl less than 100,000. The army of Romanos was 100,000 but 80% mercenaries. At Matzikert he showed up with around 35,000. Actually he won the battle but he was betrayed by the Komneni to the Turks in the final moment (at night).
There is no real "Byzantine army" after the death of Basil II in 1017. The army was disbanded by the Komnenii and their friends. All the future Byzantine armies are bad collecitons of low quality mercenaries. No high-tech, no fire-canons, no ships (all subcontracted to Italians), nothing much of a value.
the Byzantine army deployed to stop the Seljucide invasion was 80.000 men strong.... but before the battle, it was divided... nearly 40,000 men went on with Romanus to Armenia and the other 40.000 men went to Northern Siria...
What happened to the other halved... it's a mistery unsolved...
Hmmm, actually I remember it otherwise. The initial army was around 100,000 but half of it was mercenaries of low quality and no trust. Romanos had to leave already some 30,000 Slavic mercenaries behind for being unruly. Then Frankish knights fled to go raid (Byzantine villages!). Then part of the Ogkuz Turks fled to the Seljuk camp. Romanos was left with around 60,000 men. He split the army and gave some 25,000 to general Tarhaneiotes to encircle the Seljuks but his army simply "disappeared"
what are you fat? fucking pussy cant even type out motherfucker fully you have to write mf, does it make you too tired? fat fuck go lose some weight and get a girlfriend pussy.
Excelent .. thats excactly right There was never any mention whatsoever that the empire called themselves that nor did anyone else call them "byzantines". They were called "Romanous" (Romans) and funy enough even the greek language of the time was called "Romaika" (Roman) and that dialect is still used today in the Orthodox Church.
"Byzantine" first came about in the 1700's by some French writers to distinguish the West and the East Roman Empire (Roman Empire of Byzantium)
The Romans may not have called themselves "Byzantines," but the city of Constantinople was founded on the site of an already existing city, which was previously known as Byzantium.
In Attica Greece there was this town called Megara,in the year of 657 BC Byzas , foremost citizen of Megara decided to found a colony in Bosporus , the city he founded was named after him (BYzantium) and years later in 330 AD emepror Constantine renamed Byzantium to Constantinople , which meanwhile had become one of the largest cities of the Roman Empire, you are right though about how they called themselves
perfectly preserved has nothing to do with the reason of sinking. muskateerdickhead, have another sip or wine. you comments are a product of a single brain cell...
This is crap they should do the right thing by this ship now and that is to cut it up into firewood and hand pieces of it around to the homeless so they can burn it and be warm.
And what a great conversation piece it would be for the tramps who like to tell a tale or two.
Greeks......what would the world be without them!
Hail Greece and our civilization!

battle of maqtzikert Slavic-Petzenegk mercenaries unruly
2) Frankish unlruly and abdandoning
3) Some of the Oguzk (christian) Turks joining the Seljuks
4) General Tarhaneiotis and his 25,000 ... "not finding their way"....
5) Emperor Romanos being left at dusk alone with a handfull of soldiers in the battle field
... all that give a very precise image that someone was trying really hard to make Romanos losing. And we know who was, it was the Komnenodoukes.

In the battle of Mantzikert ,the Byzantine army was NOT destroyed at all!
One part did not come on time, and most of the part that took part in the battle retreated without great losses.
The main reason that Asia minor collapsed ,was that the only fighting emperor was captured.

If you gather all the circumstances:
1) Slavic-Petzenegk mercenaries unruly
2) Frankish unlruly and abdandoning
3) Some of the Oguzk (christian) Turks joining the Seljuks
4) General Tarhaneiotis and his 25,000 ... "not finding their way"....
