I always like this year and bodystyle...not as heavy as it looks, and with the FE 428 was pretty fast. Were these available with a 429/460? I drove a 1971 wagon with the base 302 Windsor...it was surprisingly fast 0-50mph in city driving! The Fords of this era seemed of lighter weight, more nimble, and fuel efficient. Sure hated those sqeaky upper control arm bushings, though.
good add, but i wouldnt be surprised if it caused epileptic attacks. its true that the technology back then was superior to many european cars, wish those times could come back.
@machone7I firstly, I must say the car I drive is a Ford Focus with only two disc brakes. secondly, what did my comment have to do with Porsches? 911s were only dangerous as a result of living in America and risking getting in an accident with all the gigantic vehicles that drive on our roads. otherwise, with their superior handling and braking they held more potential in accident prevention than just about any other car at the time. and the last sentence is dubious to say the least.
@porsche911sbs in '71 they didnt have the superior handling they have today. its like if you compare a '63 porsche 356 with a '63 ford fairlane 427. being the 356 a sports beetle.
when I was growing up Torinos were kind of a joke, but these early models looked really sweet! I'd love to drive a minty one with the Hurst manual. Those can't be too common anymore, eh?
i know what you mean about torinos kinda being granny cars in the 70's but now they are sweet ... my uncle used to have a 71 ranchero and people made fun of him for it and now its a classic muscle car
I think that was because Ford products (and AMC products) ot the era were considered "cheap", "flimsy" or "economy class" cars compared to the more "robust", "aggressive" and "luxurious" image projected by GM and Chrysler products of the day.
Strangely, today now that GM is owned by the government and Chrysler is owned by Fiat of Italy, It is Ford and it's vintage cars that are being revered more now than ever. Sort of a automotive Cinderella story, if you will.
As a Ford man most of my life, I never found anything cheap and flimsy about them back then, except for the for Falcons, but even then, after owning three of them decided they were great cars after all.
My mom had a 71 Torino GT for her 1st car. It was yellow with white leather interior, 351 Cleveland. Great car until the idiot she sold it to blew up the motor when he forgot to put oil it!
Rear window defroster was a option that only very few Torino's had..We had a 70 Torino brougham when I was groing up, it didnt have rear window defrost but it was a great looking car.
The dude drivin' it checked off the right boxes on the option list! The rear window defroster, 4-speed, electric windows and buckets were optional...
My nephew had a '71 Torino in Grabber Yellow which was a really dependable car (and earned the nickname "Yellow Submarine" after it survived an accidental dunk into floodwaters)!
Better than the barges that followed from '72 to '76!
@pbmax OMG, I couldn't have said it better myself! Don't you miss a big, hairy snatch? I know I do! And, I miss a car that will keep you safe no matter what hits you, With opera windows and thickly padded landau tops with french-seam rear windows that keep the police (or anyone else) from knowing what you're doing in that back seat with that sexy bitch with the fat titties and hairy pussy! Hey, at least they still make big vans, right?
@pbmax I couldn't agree with you more on the bush thing. A fluffy kitty beats a bald one any day for me! It makes a woman look like a woman instead of like a pre-pubescent girl. And @miamad, '71 was the last year for the convertible, the 4-dr hardtop, concealed headlights, and the CJ engine. If you don't like the '71, then you just don't like Torinos, period!
This commercial aired during the TV show "The FBI" Quinn Martin Productions was VERY BIG on Ford products being a product tie-in and corporate sponsor.

@porsche911sbs well, the 911 was known for being very dangerous with only 110hp in '71. also bad quality was known in those 911s.

The only thing flimsy I would say on Fords were the front suspension on their old unibody cars: Falcon; Mustang; Maverick;
Fairlane/ Torino before 1973.
And the Pinto was a bomb. But then so was the Chevy Vega.
