What he's saying is really a combination of common sense and physics but he's speaking in bowling instructors lingo as every field has their own argot to differentiate from the others. I can tell he's a great instructor if you're lucky enough to hire him.
The advice is excellent. He is not telling you how to control arm speed but rather when to speed it up or slow it down....thereby having more or less wrist/hand action. It is absolutely true. I didn't think about it until I saw the video. And it works. To increase ball speed raise the ball at push away, conversely lowering the ball to start your push away will decrease the speed due to a lower back swing.
@cameron99wizkhalifa don't try to curve it stay that yeah until you get a custom ball meant for spin why? i don't know much soo haha you don't need to listen to me but i straight bowled my average was 150 i wanted to start spinning it my average dropped to 100 and now i can't straight bowl like i use to
Those are some pretty bad advices. Ball speed is generated by 1) the height of your backswing, 2) the stride length of the sliding step, & 3) your muscle. #1 provide the most consistent speed, #3 the least. You control the height of the backswing by controlling the height of the ball on the approach. Hold it lower and you'll have lower backswing and lower speed. Hold it higher and you'll have higher speed. Changing axis rotation is much more consistent than rev rate.
@louisdiaz316 Yes, all bowling lanes are oily. The thing is, some lanes are more oily than others. When we say "dry lanes", they DO have oil on it, but not very much, so the ball will react more. The "oily lanes" have more oil on, so the ball will react less.
That explains what the commentators were talking about on the PBA Cheetah pattern championship this year. Hard and fast down the right side due to the reduced oil on the outside. The speed is increased to decrease the hook! Makes perfect sense now.
@gamemeister27 However, this only works when there is oil on the lanes. If your on a surface with very little oil, the ball will instead of slide, which it is meant to do with increasing speed, the ball will generate friction creating more heat and more reaction. It all depends on the oil pattern and how much of it there is.
@blacklabador I do believe they played the outside line of the oil in the middle, so if they missed somewhat right it would read that friction earlier.
@deadlyvirus89 I have the same ball n began 2 finger style 8 months ago., Id control it majority of the time 2 throwing in same location, im guessing you're a lefty because i leave 7 pins to. Honestly with 7 or 10 pins it means u hit the pocket well, but depending on angle you hit it, you just had a bad break. Nothing 2 do to avoid that. if u want 2 learn 2 pick up your 7 pin, take a light house ball and throw it fast b4 it can hook. learn fingertip tho. it works. it helps w practice, I KNOW.
you shouldn't be slowing down/speeding up your swing the way he described because that means you are muscling it with your arm which isn't good for accuracy. raise the ball at the start of your swing for more speed or lower it for less.
yes a reactive resign ball causes more friction which means more hook. plus you can put less spin on the ball and get equal or more hook. A hook ball makes you a lot more consistent.
you know, ive been told houseballs, and plastic balls dont curve or spin very easily. so i started to think to myself. am i sort of a god, because i can but a good amount of spin on houseballs, i can actualy get a descent score around 200-220 with them. is buying a ball that is made to curve worth it if a i can make a ball not made to curve, curve perfectly fine?
@who8mahbacon Thats the problem, they will not tell you. But if you watch the WAHSAM vids there is a clue. Look for 4 screws in the middle and the back of the flat gutter instead of 2 each. They need the extra 2 screws to hold the gutter down when a WAHSAM is installed under it.
This stuff is quite helpful. At least now I understand what I'm supposed to do. I'm learning. I really love the sport. The only problem is it's expensive to practice, just like golf. But it's nice having the basics. Now I just have to apply them and see what happens. Tonight, in my league, I bowled a 160 in the first game (128 is my average) but then the last two games I bowled around my average. I was disappointed, but I was very close to bowling around 160 all three games.
@semperfibarnes He wasn't talking about specific shots. He was talking about how to actually get the ball to hook more/less, no matter where you stand and where you aim. The whole point was about paying attention to your release/motion.
I have been bowling all my life recreationaly but got into it seriously a few months ago when i met a girl who was into bowling. She got me a ball 4 my b-day and since watching these videos i have brought my average up from a 180 (with lane balls and conventional grip) to a 219 with my new ball and fingertip grip.... Great vids guys.
I've been getting a lot better at bowling and this is great information. Some lanes I've found my hook is breaking to early and I know it's because I got used to playing on a slicker lane. I hope to apply this info. Bowling is a great sport.
He makes perfect sense: In a nutshell: On oily lanes throw the ball slower, but use more wrist/finger lift. On dry lanes: Throw the ball faster, but less finger lift/wrist rotation. It DOES work!!! It ain't rocket science! My average: 180
a thumb slug is sorta like finger inserts so ur thumb sntubin agianst raw urthrene. i helps with out irrating ur thumb ad gtting sores i think but they r expensive
its only like $10 to get a thumb slug.. what they do is drill a hole the size of the slug and they put the slug in and glue it.. then they drill the slug to the size of your hand instead of just the ball
@Scotchtapeeater its not really that big of a difference.. for me if feels almost exactly the same and i still have to use tape anyways.. its really just prefrence
ya try the slug out.. i know my brother uses them and he uses oval finger grips.. i use no slug and power lift grips and a piece of tape in the thumb on the top for more grip.. everyones different
i gotta tornado and trying to hook better and watching this helped but wen i got my fingers drilled i got the finger insterts with no thumb slug, and after about 4 games i got little better but adjusting to the finger insterts it feels like the tendants in my hand are being ripped : /
im only 12 and iv been bowling on a team on a local ally in vegas and been using a plastic ball and found out about the hook at the end of my second year i try to hook with my plastic ball but i only get a avrage of 98 : (
well it seems like to me that you need to get a reactive bowling ball (a ball that is made to hook). I'm 16 and i bowl on my high school league in Indiana and I use hook bowling balls. my average right now is around 163. so u might want to talk to a pro shop manager about furthering your game.
no... because if the ball has less time to react it moves less. Hence why on Dry lanes rolling faster with less hand the ball moves and the ball doesnt have much time to roll and react
Got to admit, I'd gladly take lessons from Fred. He seems to know his stuff. If you can't understand what he's saying, review it until you do or ask someone who can chuck the rock better than you. It makes sense.
Some leagues establish average using the FIRST week of bowling as your starting average for the first 3 weeks. They usually leave the lanes dry....causing most bowlers to bowl above their real average.
Then the next week they'll oil the lanes properly and most people bowl below their average.
My leage is the oposite. The lanes are extremly oiley in the begining but as the year progresses they get dryer and dryer. I bowl better on dryer condidtions. I aslo bowl well when the backends are really sharp. I hate soft backends. I almost left and 8-10 split the last time I bowled on soft backends and my rev rate is around 400.
too bad you don't show what you actually do on oily/dry lanes and stuff, I would wanna see you do it, would be more educational. Good video though! 5/5
I highly recommend, if any local centers have it, to join the USBC pba experience league. Challenging lane conditions force you apply what you learn from these videos. You can only get better.
I got to say that this is the most helpful video of Borden's. One thing I like to see though is these intructors explaining less hand and more hand. Another thing I like to see is the instructors say to release the ball when the elbow is at your side. No one looks down at their ankle when relasing the ball, so stop using that as a point of release! Of course, I have late timing and couldn't follow this stuff very well until I figured my game out on my own. This is a good video though.
Coach Borden. Someday u need 2 visit some of South Carolina's bowling centers like Wade Hampton Lanes, Golden, Strikeforce, and peach bowl lanes. you'll be surprised how many good bowlers we have in SC. at least come 2 some tourniments. my average is 210
I can control my hook by changing power but that means, i must change the ball. When the floor is not dry enough and i get less hook, i change my ball to the heavier, but if i just throw the same ball slower so then it has the right target but not enough power. So if you need to throw slower, why not to use a heavier ball ?
Standing on 35-37 throwing over 15 so as not to catch the dryer outside, usually found 10 to 10, until 25 feet or so, I can have a 4 to 6 board swing.
Ummm, when the lanes are medium is when you go 50-50. When they're dry, you wanna take off revs and throw it faster. Otherwise, the ball hooks too early and goes Brooklyn every time.
