  • what about speed picking on thicker strings? same technique? I can't imagine you being able to use you finger as a guide on the 6th string

  • Emilio Estevez... can PLAY.

  • @TheLastAbacus Never been compared to him but that's a good one...lol!

  • Dang

  • Thank you. You're so amazing..I've been subscribed to you since 09. I've always had a rough time trying to speed pick and sweep pick. Also wondering if it matters if I hold a guitar pick with 3 fingers or with 2 fingers or even if that makes a difference if you see this by chance? I've been using 3 since I started playing guitar and it's been a habit for me.

  • Something that I've always wondered is which muscles/movements do you use when you pick the string? What I mean by that is do you "rotate" the wrist/forearm, or do you move it back and forth kind of like a computer mouse?

  • @nuclearmass Good question. I'd say more like a mouse if you want to use that analogy. It's a slight movement when done in a more refined way but I find that I change it up depending on what type of sound I want. I used to just do it one way but the longer I play the more I want variety, and that requires varying techniques.

  • @SteveOuimette Hey thanks Steve. :)

  • Steve, I need some tips on buying a new amp. I don't want something super expensive, but I want something with a lot of crunch to it. To be descriptive, I want one that sounds like the one you have in this video. What amp do you use?

  • hey did you made

    cult of personality remake?? D:

  • @keny21051995 No, I believe that was Wavegroup.

  • @SteveOuimette

    thankyou

    byhe way

    you're awesome!!!

  • When did you learn to play guitar and who taught you?

  • 5:53 "obviously i haven't warmed up" 0.o

  • @wazaaaaa124 Yeah he scared me a little there 0.o,but if you think well,Eddie Van Halen used to warm up at the show playing erupition...\O.O/

  • 2 people are just plain gay faggots... im sorry but i cant think of anything bad to say about them that involves this video because the viddeo was just to awesome

  • your right hand strums so fast that its blury on the camera lol

  • THANK YOU STEVE!!!!!

ive been playing for 3 years, and ive been putting too much tension on my right hand and wrist,so i cant play fast....and i learned the best lesson in my life:relax!!

in one week i learned more than i learned in 3 years!!!!!!

    (sorry for bad english!!)

  • Patterns, exersises, licks can be fitted or placed differently into grooves. You can loose a giant shit load of tension by practising with grooves, danceable styles, nonrock rhytms.Practising with music can make it psychologically easyer to make many hours.Oh, think it,s better to not support with righthand middel finger on body when you pick, much better, if you wanna go real far!

  • how do u go so fast though? even on one note. I just cant go fast with my right hand. Ive even tried a metronome with just playing 1 note.

  • @ozzy9691 It's all about relaxing my brother! Take it a little at a time and as soon as you feel yourself tensing up, back off until you can do it relaxed. Otherwise you'll kill yourself and never get any accurate speed.

  • @SteveOuimette i will attempt. thanks a bunch though

  • @SteveOuimette I didn't realise until after watching this video that for the last 5 years of practice I'd been putting way too much tension in my wrist when trying to play fast,. I could play fast but I had barely any accuracy and it made me wonder how people could play with such accuracy at that speed. HOWEVER, after letting my wrist hang loose, not only am I playing more accurate after only a few hours of practice, I can pick even faster than I could the other way. Thanks so much Steve!

  • dude i play guitar with a tee and shorts too lol!

  • i have great speed with picking and i have great speed with my fingures but they wont sincronize , should i contiue to play faster and work my hands togther at a faster speed or slow down and work slower please any advice would be nice>

  • u have alota guitars! =D

  • I play Bass but i want to play guitar, any tips on what kind of guitar would help with the transition?

  • What kind of guitar is that?

  • hey we have the same guitar!!!! although mine doesnt have a pickup and no strings............oh and a question......how much is that one??? mine is black.....

  • speed picking on one string is easy for me, but switching the strings is so hard! my fingers on my left hand are fast and i can fret fast stuff on different strings, but my right hand is a completely different story.

  • @mctasticbitches idc if u dont cuz u dnt know me i play football for highschool i get A's B's C's i learned the unforgiven and iron man on real guitar And i have a gf that i love n take care of so i have a life so dont say shit

  • I'd rather play real guitar then be a no life lol

  • Man I suck at guitar I wana learn it but the pick the strings drives me crazy I can do guitar hero do I got 100% on we three kings on expert but real guitar I cnt seem to do

  • @Legendnum23 Don't feel bad I'm exactly the reverse. Can't play GH to save my life! They're totally different beasts for sure.

  • @SteveOuimette I know what you mean... my kids are all like "daddy, you play guitar, you'll like this game" ...but I can't play it. lol... I'm horrible at GH lol

  • @Legendnum23 i dont believe you

  • I have been able to steadily increase my speed so far in my playing, and it seems to be working alright, but my question lies within the area of when I start to move away from picking for the most part, because i've noticed recently I can feel my first finger of my right hand kind of dragging across the strings when i move into chords after i do individual string work, and when i adjust the finger placement up afterwards, i can still feel it dragging sometimes, is this a bad thing?

  • @TylerBourciermusic I dragged my finger across the strings all my time playing until last month. Make the adjustment to show more pick when you move to rhythm playing and it will take care of itself. Great question!

  • @SteveOuimette okay thank you very much, I assume im probably getting worked up over something that is not a HUGE deal, it was just a bit uncomfortable. so once again thank you, and i guess i lucked out getting help from a great guitarist like you. :)

  • at what angle do i need to pick? is there only one certain angle?

  • @itachipwnsu24 I think any angle that feels right for you is right. There really are no rules.

  • what are some of the best way to work on getting your left hand to work with the right, my pickings fast but it sounds horrible if the left hand can't keep up.

  • @midmike994 You can only go as fast as your slowest hand or fingers so slow everything down to match that. Once you can accurately and comfortably play at that slower speed start increasing your speed little by little. I'm afraid there is no shortcut for this, it takes time and practice. Lots of it!

  • hey Steve these are great tips thanxs ive been playing for about 4 months and im pretty good ive been trying to learn we three kings ive got it down but i just cant seem to get the speed right any tips?

  • hey Steve these are great tips thanxs ive been playing for about 4 months and im pretty good ive been trying to learn we three kings ive got it down but i just cant seem to get the speed right any tips?

  • Okay so im a newby guitar player and im self teaching, i know all of the notes to the song thunderstruck by acdc, well i know where to put my fingers for it. I can speed pick pretty fast but when i try to put the notes from the song along with my picking, its sounds like a mess! Any advice please?

  • can u put i vid on how to pinch harmonics thats the only thing i dont understand how to do thx man.

  • what can i do to help myself to just use my wrist when trying to play fast? when i speed up i tend to use my elbow to pick but i know this is wrong. Is playing slowly with a metronome and gradually building up speed daily the only way to help myself?

  • @sk8monster112 I think paying attention to and being aware of what you're doing is most important. A metronome is great for steadying your picking and gradually increasing it but my advice is as soon as your elbow starts coming into play you need to back off the speed until it's comfortable. Speed up only after you've got a solid foundation otherwise it will fall apart on you as you get faster.

  • @SteveOuimette alright thanks for the advice, ill try doing that!

  • i think his pinky is a robot! it moves so fast!

  • is there a specific way to hold the pick? Or just whats comfortable? thanks :)

  • Hard to speed picking on my acoustic :/

  • Hey steve, being a guitar god and all, would it be too much to ask for u to visit my videos on my channel and get your opinion on my guitar playing? If you have time lol...thank you.

  • thats thing u did at 527 u got from paul gilbert hu

  • what if you want to go fast, AND dig the pick into the strings (like blues players)....i guess the technique i'm thinking of is like a gypsi jazz type (Dango Reinheart, Bereli lagren....ext). Basically setting it up so you can use the technique on acoustic as well. Any thoughts?

  • @SwampAshHSS Great question! I like to dig in a lot myself. It all comes down to first having control, then adding pressure to get the desired attack. Django was a master of this and you can't mistake the sound. Despite what some people think you can do that with a heavy pick, a thin pick or no pick at all (Jeff Beck). The other thing is with amps that aren't so overdriven you need to punish the strings more to get that tone out of the guitar and amp. Practice grace first then add force!

  • @SteveOuimette great answer! yes, i've found that too. that if you play into say an amp with less overdrive (or set the gain lower), you can still get overdrive but you need to "feed" the amp with a big signal that can only come from your pick hand. i guess i like it that way, or i strive for it i should say.

thanks for sharing your knowledge. you should come out with an album, i bet it would be pretty creative and soulful.

  • woww. u he has a lot of cool guitars

  • ive been playing guitar for 9 years, i pretty much alternate picking everything i play and i know all the scales, ive been practicing alternate picking techniques for building up speed, ive noticed ive gotton faster in the past 2 weeks, it seems like its going to take a long time to reach your speed, do you have any tips soo that i can improve up to your speed?

  • I think you should do a tutorial on harmonics.

  • i speed picked so long using my elbow ( and could do it pretty clean, but it's really hard to go from that bad habit to doing it right, with the wrist. wish i would have done it right from the start. it's harder to speed pick while standing using the elbow method too. pain in the ass live. in the middle of transformation but it makes it really awkward.. grr. thanks for the vid man, great explanation helpful.

    skep

  • i use the same pick

  • the best lesson

  • It's LOU!

  • 3:29 "my first guitar teacher SATAN"

ha ha just kidding, i keep doing that thing that he says on 6:38 about the left hand so that´s why i can´t go faster.

    Thanks Steve

  • hey steve you need to do a lesson on slideing

  • This helped me a lot, practice makes perfect, so i hope i can get really good at speed picking. Thanks.

  • amazing. Your little licks sound like Paul

    gilbert.

  • Steve Ouimette, I will follow in your footsteps!

  • @slamshotstudios Yeah me too :P

  • down down down up :D

  • When i speed pick, i just turn the pick to the left, so that the edge of the pick that is facing the head is slanted down. It's really good for tremolos.

  • I heard eddie van halen stiffens his arm or something when he strums fast, is that true?

  • Ed uses a type of speed picking called flutter-picking. If you watch him he almost flicks his wrist...it's a unique style of picking I've never been able to do but there are others that have it as well. He does anchor his arm a little when he does it but I wouldn't say he's stiffening up at all.

  • You can really hurt yourself if you stiffen up when you play. Like, bad enough to prevent you from playing when you're older.

  • dude...got enough guitars? im hoping to geta dean ml guitar with wammy. I like to play van halen stuff like eruption.

  • hey man ur pretty mint man honestly ur version of we three kings is ace oh and just to ask can u play acoustic guitar if so can u make a vid of that i only have acoustic

  • Could you put up a video showing squealies, pinch harmonics, artificial harmonics, or whatever they're called? I can't do those and no videos help, but you seemt o put in good little details.

  • Thats probably the best speed lesson I've seen so far. Really helped having those minor details that other vid's tend to leave out. Big Thanks.

  • Thanks, this helped a lot.

    Rock on.

  • u rock

  • thanks man

i thought i was the only one that had my thumb so far down

  • great to have you back. why have you been gone?

  • thats ironic i use Planet Wave Black Ice Medium.

  • thanks!

  • awesome steve.

  • thanks for the lesson, good to have u back

  • cool, quite
