I was actually surprised, the Luther Drive sounds AMAZING! It's really clear and articulate even with chords. The HardWire is heavier and thicker tone. I love both pedals.
And the winner is Luther. The cm2 lacks the clarity of the intervals when two strings are played. The clarity of the chords is one of the best reasons why you chose a overdrive among other distortions.
Luther. It kinda destroys the cm2, which makes me sad, because Burgerman666 did a demo of the cm2 vs. Bad monkey (the dirt pedal i use) and the bm got destroyed. Judging from these demos, the cm2 beats the bm, the luther beats the cm2, the loud mod luther beats normal luther, landgraff beats loud mod luther, and rockbox boiling point beats landgraff...grrrr.
I prefer the hardwire, because I can get more sounds, and In my opinion I dont like gibson, I dont like that sound, I prefer a Dean VMNT with Live wire Dave Mustaine pickups thats perfect for overdrive, but just my opinion :)
The Luther is a grat sounding drive, not sure what the "mods" might be on the 808 circuit. The Hardwire has an advantage in that it has two modes and a separate bass and treb control.
I personally do not like having just the one tone control. That is what I like about the Hardwire and the new Ice 9 more bass while being able to cut the highs as well. The Fulltone is really just a rolloff tone control, what I do not like about all the TS three knob variations. The Ice 9 is a great new drive.
The Luther seems to have more sustain. The HW kind of cuts out as soon as he hits the strings. It could be his settings. If I played blues, I'd go with the hardwire, I think. But it sounds like the Luther would be better for rock. Just my opinion.
I have the CM-2. One thing I definitely like better about the Luther is the vacuum style switch. The switch on the CM-2 seems less than rugged to me. We'll see after a year of gigs if I'm right
@trey5000 Trey, I agree, besides why would Jack Black need to make and sell his own drives. Like he would have the time to spend making them or need any money!!! P.S. Inside knowledge says it's not him.
I dunno. Sound pretty close. I think both are good. I think I'd probably prefer the Digitech for features and price, and the whole hardwire series seems pretty damn solid.
Exactly what i thought... The Luther does sound punchier and gives off more and thicker sustain but it's too simple if you want to go bananas with your tone. The Hardwire sounds pretty good though but needs a bit more gain.. unfortunately i can't say if it's not capable of doing so or it's just the settings it's on.
i own the Hardwire and the great features of it are True Bypass, Way more volume and Active EQ. Which you can really fatten the tone thanx to the Low knob, cant get that with most tube screamers :( I used to have a modded Ts808 tube screamer and this Hardwire replaced it, and i use the Lovepedal for a clean boost. The Hardwire could use a little bit of compression so i use a compressor to sweeten the tone so its fat and juicy. All in all its worth a go. Its a great buy for any skill level.
Hardwire for me. Sweet, mellow, yet articulte and crunchy tone.

the digitech is good and so is the luther. I really am not a fan of overdrive pedals! They all sound relatively the same. Prove me wrong GMD

Your Luther Drive sounded better to my ears. But the Hardwire isn't a bad sounding pedal.
