  • Hi. You are very informative..

  • I think I can explain the cosmos thing (which translates to Space Rangers more or so). The airing of Star Trek in Quebec happen to coincide with the appliance of the law for the protection of french, which means in order to be aired, TV shows had to be titled partialy or completely in french. That's why it's called like that, but frankly, nobody gives a fuck here and just call Star Trek.

  • I just got the Blu Rays because of you. And it is worth it. it did cost a little more than 60 though

  • You are absolutely right about the original aspect ratio.

Unfortunately, tv sets in electronic stores here in Germany often display 4:3 content distorted to 16:9. I just don't get it. If they want to show-off widescreen tvs and don't like pillar boxing they just shouldn't use 4:3 content. What I really find astonishing is that many people don't even seem to see the difference.

  • @BjoernarEricSven It's not a big deal as long as you can have a choice of aspect ratios. I actually like to fill up the screen. But i'm sure the quality isn't as good

  • @morath11 Your HDTV should have a Zoom feature, so you can zoom in the image to crop off the top and bottom of the image and have it fill your screen. Just realize that you're chopping off a full third of the image in doing so, and will likely notice framing issues. The pillarboxing is simply the default when you start the disc, as it is the correct way to view 4x3 content on a 16x9 display - just as letterboxed is the correct way to view widescreen material on a 4x3 TV.

  • @Zaranyzerak It does. When i play them, they automatically do the fill in the screen thing. I'm just saying I understand why some just want to watch the episodes the way they were made. I just have to go out and pay $50 bucks to watch the remastered versions or about $70 bucks for the Blu-ray versions each. I'm still debating in my head

  • @morath11 By the way I can do the 4:3 version or 16:9 version. Or so it looks like. I'm not sure. I just know the original version looks like VHS crap

  • @BjoernarEricSven But I can see your point. If you're going to display a 4:3 tv series, it should be shown that way to display how the tv plays the way it's supposed to. BTW. Has anyone tried to order the Original Series online. I did because they advertised the Remastered editions and recieved the original versions of the original series. 2001-2004 versions. Not the ones I wanted

  • Dude you're wasting your time George Lucas has no interest in what his fans want.

  • @MrBuc128 Sadly true. At least Spielberg does it right with the DVD/Blu-ray release of his movies, offering all the various cuts that are available ie: E.T. and Close Encounters. Would be nice if he had a little chat with his good buddy George about that sort of thing...

  • @Zaranyzerak

    Hi, I'd like your advice.

I'm under 20, and have never watched any Star Trek, either movie or tv. I know next to nothing about Star Trek. I know about as much about Star Trek as someone in Angola, despite being an American living near Hollywood.

So, handing over $180 for the first 3 seasons seems a bit pricy. (even knowing the price history from your videos)

So would you recommend I buy the first season to try Star Trek? Or?

  • @smartwarlord If you're worried about liking it or not, you can actually watch The Original Series (all three seasons) for free at CBS.com. I think they own it now? Not sure about that, but if you don't mind sitting through some commercials, it will give you a great idea if you like it or not! I love it personally!

  • @MissRetroPink

I'm the type of person who only watches things once. So I always buy the best quality. Hence the blu-ray consideration.

If I wanted less quality, I could very easily just get all Star Trek TVs and Movies for free. It's the internet, afterall.

  • Was Billy Blackbird one of the red shirt wearing guys

  • @morath11

    Billy Blackburn played Lieutenant Kyle.

  • Can u do a in depth review for series 2 please

  • @bringeroffunerals It's funny you ask right now, since I'm actually right in the middle of watching it. :) Perhaps I'll do that. Would likely just be one part, though, since I've already pretty much covered the history...

  • @Zaranyzerak I'm thinking of buying them and i've seen the history of them in your vids, I enjoy watching your reviews and I will look 4ward to it :)

  • I really wanted to start this post with "I can't see any difference" or "The DVD's are just as good as good"...but I've only just eaten, and the thought of a man exploding on my screen...yuk. ;)

  • @GhibliFan1 *explodes*

  • Will you be getting seasons 2 & 3

  • @bringeroffunerals I got Season 2 a while ago, no money for Season 3 right now, but it's a high priority.

  • fuck advertisements before every video

  • Nice review!!! Keep up the great work!!!

  • I grow up to watch Star Trek TOS Season 1 and 2 in stardate order. I happy to have the Blu-ray of Season 1 and 2 but Season 3 ???. Is Season 3 really worst to watch because i never watch it. Star Trek TOS is the only Star Trek serie i love to watch and grow up since 1979 (6 years old). The Laserdisc format is the best way to watch Star Trek TOS in stardate order.

  • @MyNameIsArmakuni The Laserdiscs were great, I had about half the series on LD a while back. Best quality available for a LONG time. The numbering was actually based on production order. But the nice thing about the Laserdiscs and VHS version was there was one episode per side/tape, so you could easily swap them around and watch them in whatever order you like - airdate, production or Stardate. No idea why they went with the generally reviled Airdate order for the DVD and Blu-ray Season sets...

  • @Zaranyzerak Laserdisc is a wonderful format and the sound is great and it is BIG. I still have the complete Season 1 and 2 and some are sealed. VHS is a bad format because the Betamax was far better. Maybe they think the airdate is the correct order to watch rather than production or the stardate order. I believe the stardate is the best way to watch Star Trek TOS. I like that Captain James T. Kirk say the stardate every episode. I'm a big fan of Captain Kirk and have a lot of statues of him.

  • Would you recommend getting "Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection" on Blu-Ray?

  • @Kratos87Fan19 Absolutely NOT. The Movie Collection is a DNR mess. the only one to get a proper remaster was Wrath of Khan, and even that has some issues. I'm waiting for it to be done properly. Which sucks, as that was a set I was really looking forward to... Obviously the TV show set was done by a different team. You know, one that actually KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING....

  • @Zaranyzerak LOL, no need to yell I was just asking!

  • Spielberg and Lucas proberly come out 2025 with E.T. and Star Wars on bluray.

They do not release there movies quick.

  • Thanks, I hadn't heard the term "pillar box" before - and I had wondered about "sideways" anamorphic.

  • your french is actually pretty good for somebody who doesn't know what he's sayin

  • I just bought this season recently, and i am very impressed with the quality of the picture & sound. I have started watching them in stardate order, which as you said seems to follow a logical path as you watch each episode. The only pain is changing discs pretty much every episode early on!! Other than that this box set is top notch!

  • Ok, cool review. But still, I would like to hear what you think about the series? What it your top 3 episodes and stuff like that.

  • something you forgot to mention was watching it in black and white with no volume while reading the subtitles, try it sometime !

  • Um...I wouldn't say I "forgot" to mention that, it's not something I would be likely to think of. Why on earth would I want to do that?

  • @Zaranyzerak Cause Star Trek was originally in black and white and spoken in Mandarin...pfft, duh!

  • BECAUSE, its about storytelling, i went to a TV school many years ago and was taught that originally movies were silent and in black and white and to be a good storyteller you had to be able to make a silent black and white movie. Even that george lucas liar went on about star wars being a silent movie BUT with music, BUT never put that fuction on the DVD, liar !

years ago star trek was on at midnight and i use to watch it black and white with no volume, just to understand the storytelling.

  • @lowaces Should we speed it up, add heavy grain, and play old piano music as well?

  • @phxsns1 whatever floats your boat man -- i personally like star trek with a little bit of marijuana myself

  • thank you for doing this. I wanted to know what version to get, and you shown me, keep up the good work.

  • You're quite welcome! That's why I did it! :)

  • BTW Z, did you get season 3 yet?

  • Cheap if u ask me.....u should b glad its only 60$. Much more expensive here....

  • @Bookaswede In Australia its like $125 AUD.

  • i like watching the original series in the original special affects. 1960's sound and uniforms and hairdoos: the 2000's special affects sticks out like a sore thumb

  • Why does it matter that the episodes are in air date order and not in production order? If the episodes were aired in that order, doesn't that mean the episodes are in sequence story wise? Does it matter when they were filmed? Please clear this up for me because I just don't see what that would even matter.

  • You would think airdate order would be story order, but that's not always the case. Take Firefly, for example. It was aired COMPLETELY out of the intended story order, with the 2 hour pilot episode actually being showed LAST... The order was corrected for the DVD/Blu-ray releases. In the case of Star Trek, there is a very obvious continuity for most of the first season that is ruined by the haphazard airdate order. The Producers have said numerous times the airdate order was wrong.

  • Not to mention almost every previous video release firmly established the Production Order as the viewing order preferred by the producers, clearly numbering each episode and having the airdate listed in the notes.

  • Question:

I just bought my very first Blu-Ray player, and I just ordered from Amazon the Star Trek Blu-Ray set as my very first Blu-Rays, my question is this. I have the old standard square TV, it's about 20 years old. Now with an old TV will I notice the difference of the sound & picture quality between the Star Trek Blu-Rays and the last Star Trek DVD sets that were issued.

Again, this is my first time with Blu-Ray, and with an old TV I wondered about this.

  • Well, you probably won't notice a night and day difference, but it will look cleaner and sharper than what you've seen on previous releases. It will basically be the crispest, cleanest standard def you've ever seen (no artifacting in sight).

Plus the aspect ratio is formatted for 16x9 screens, so you'll be seeing it in what appears to be a black box all the way around the image, but I went over that in the video. Once you get a 16x9 set that won't be an issue anymore.

  • Ok. thanks. Kind of sucks there's no formatation for the older TV's, but it's still a good deal on these blu-rays. When you're a Trek Fan. BTW I don't know if know this but Season 3 comes out on December 15th, and Amazon has the pre-order for around $53. Did you get Season 2 yet?

  • Yeah, but I can understand why they did the formatting that way. The world is going 16x9, so it basically "future-proofs" it, insuring that it will always display properly on a 16x9 TV. The recent Blu-ray set of The prisoner was done the same way. And yes, we actually JUST picked up Season 2. Haven't had the chance to watch it in full yet, but also looks good from what I skimmed through! Oh, and 53 bucks is a great deal. We paid 80 for Season 2.. :(

  • BTW I Took your advice and finally bought a HD widescreen TV for my den. 19". When I get it all hooked up the first thing I'll play is the Star Trek Blu-Rays. LOL

  • BTW I forgot to ask, the black border wrap around the 4x3 screen, how bad is it for an old tv? Does it make the picture look real small? I have an old 19".

  • Does this Blu-ray tell you what the production order is? Is it a nusence to try and watch the episodes in the proper order, especially for people who aren't familiar with what the different orders are?

  • Alas, it doesn't. I had to poke around the net for an episode guide. That's another thing they did with previous releases that they didn't do with this one. Previous releases told you the production number, airdate and stardate of every episode on the packaging...

  • Man that is so jacked up! I can't believe anyone would actually allow episodes to be shown so out of order on television. Not to mention making it a bitch to watch on video. It seems like such a simple thing....its like they don't want people to watch it. Or they just plain don't care. What a fucked up world. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I'm shocked!

  • u make a lot of sense about audio n picture quality.

episode order dusent really bother me too much lol

i happy as long as i've got every episode lol

  • I know you love 80s and 90s cartoons. Have you ever looked at Star Trek the Animated Series? its from the 70s I am not sure if it air much since.

I think it is very good and it seems to me its very overlook by lot of fans. Saw it at my Walmart for $15.00

    troy

  • Haven't seen it yet, but it's high on my list since I'm in the process of collecting both Star Trek and Filmation's cartoons. :)

  • zaranyzerak, your not going to belive this, hell I can't belive it myself. I just found ST S1 on bluray at a pawnshop for $20.00 dollars!

    only thing.

case was broke on the inside. dics are fine.

What a stroke of luck. people check pawnshops for deals.

    love your review

    as always.

    troy

  • Wow, now that is one amazing deal! Nice one! Yeah, we actually hit up the local pawn shops quite a bit out our way too. the main one we go to has both 5 and 10 dollar bins for DVDs, and often has deals on used Blu-ray titles too. :)

  • Im going to buy these on dvd and blu ray but the problem i have is i dont have a HD Tv yet so will i have the awesome picture that blu ray gives you?

  • Well, you won't have them in HD (obviously) but if your player downconverts to SD (like the PS3 does), you'll still be able to watch them. Just remember it's meant for widescreen TV's, so on a non-widescreen TV the image will appear "windowboxed." But once you get a HDTV it will look normal, with just the black bars on the sides.

  • Do you speak French (even a little) since they speak both in Canada. Have you ever had to talk to another Canadian who speaks only French?

  • Comment removed

  • Hope you took that price sticker off after, I am completely OSD about strikers on my cases.

  • Oh god yes, I only left it on for the video as proof of the awesome price. I'm totally OCD about those too.

  • Sorry, I spelled resolution wrong towards the bottom

  • So basically, the whole hard encoded 4:3 thing is like a reverse of non-anamorphic widescreen. I guess it's non-anamorphic full screen. You can watch it perfectly on a widescreen TV, but not on a 4:3 TV. Doen't that piss you off? Windowboxing is annoying. Plus, don't you lose some resolation in the image because some of that resolution is going into the hard encoded pillar boxes? Just doesn't seem like a good way to do it.

  • You don't lose any resolution, because even it was encoded in a 4x3 resolution it would still be the same number of pixels making up the picture area. With 4x3 Letterbox you would lose resolution because it wasn't using the entire frame for the widescreen image (such as with 16x9 anamorphic or HD resolutions) By doing it as a 16x9 pillarboxed image, it doesn't easily allow for stretching or distorting the picture as easily, instead forcing the correct viewing mode for 4x3 content.

  • It would be great if they came up with some kind of "4x3 anamorphic" mode that would use the full 16x9 frame then squeeze it down to 4x3 in a similar fashion to 16x9 anamorphic, but I don't see that happening any time soon, if ever. The Windowboxing doesn't bother me because I understand WHY they did it and what it is. The only reason it displays like that for me is because I have a 4x3 TV. But I am reassured by knowing that when we DO get a 16x9 display, it will display correctly.

  • Did you like the new or old effects more?

  • Whenever I open the case on my set, the single disc on the back pops out. Are you having this problem?

  • I watched all 3 parts & it was very informative. As for the price point- you aren't sharing anything with me that I didn't know already. Yes I too was a victim of paying for VHS then single DVDs- I agree, the new Blueray is VERY reasonably priced. I can't wait to check it out- my brother got it!

(I still have the DVD season sets- which I saw on ebay for $275 for all 3 which prices out to $91.67/ season- again a comparison that makes this one seem like a steal. Amazon still has it for $64.99)

  • Based on this, It seems to me that the you got Season 1 TWICE for $60.00, sounds good.

  • there not at my wall-mart i went out to buy it and its not there

so im getting it on amazon

  • Probably sold out, it's been selling like crazy. We went to three different stores before we found it at Wal-Mart, and they only had two copies left at the time...

  • Greetings:

Wow, that's a truly amazing review you made! I have a question: I live in Mexico, and here the stores are selling the complete original series on DVD, with the Blu Ray cover. But I'm afraid that collection could be the un-remastered version or perhaps and older set. How could I know if this set is the newest one? Should I buy it? Its cost is $35 USD. Thank you for your time and congratulations. Live long and prosper.

Ricardo Peri (it sounds like Perry)

    Veracruz, Mexico.

  • I don't know anything about that version. But if it's the complete series, with the Blu-ray cover, it sounds very fishy to me. The complete series hasn't even been released on Blu-ray yet, and those covers ONLY appear on the Blu-ray version. You might want to do some research first and make sure it isn't an illegal bootleg version, because from your description it really sounds like it could be one.

  • It especially sounds fishy because of the price as well. I haven't seen even SINGLE seasons available for that low a price, let alone the complete series.

  • Are you going to only get the original Star Trek show or are you going to eventually get all of the Star Trek series?

  • Thanks for all the info. Now I know I want the Blu Ray version even more.

  • Hahaha! My pleasure, Mike! Glad to see you've finally got around to working your way through my "Star Trek Week," I was wondering when you were going to chime in. :)

  • What a german or france voice?

  • Well, it's price is ok. Over here that's about standard full price for a new set.

I have to say, I liked your little aspect ratio rant. ^_^ One thing that really bothers me with my new PC monitor is how it stretches the resolution when I'm trying to play an old game in 640x480 or 320x240.

I have to admit, I would like to see another production of the original Star Wars effects. I'm sure you could still do the multiple angle thing with Star wars.

    DNR?

    Go Anetta!

  • I was putting the price in perspective for people bithcing and moaning that it was too expensive. Yes, it is actually quite an average price. But in contrast to the previous releases on all the other formats, it's a FANTASTIC price! Especially given what an overal excellent presentation it is.

DNR = Digital Noise Reduction. There is an ongoing controversy at the moment about it, mainly directed at studios who use DNR to REMOVE film grain in HD transfers, eliminating fine details.

  • Oh, visual noise. That's interesting because in Mass Effect they actually put film grain over the hole game. It's subtle but a cool effect.

I suppose I'm coming from a different place. The extras and the higher quality video are nice and everything but the mane thing for me is that I get to watch my favorite shows. For me DVD quality is good enough.

Also, I hired out a BD to try out on my PS3 and it was in black and white and the top part of the screen had warped around to the bottom. Strange.

  • You know I had an idea. That probably won't catch on but here it is anyway. What about Blue Ray Discs that are the size of Laser Dicks!

  • since Star Trek is and always has been such a great money maker for them?

  • Oh, I wouldn't discount the possibility. If the projected PROFIT from such an undertaking outweighs the expense of doing it, I'm sure they will. In fact, given how well the TOS Blu-rays are selling I would be very surprised if they DIDN'T do it at some point in the forseeable future. Yes, it would be a shit-ton of work to do, but if the money's there they'll do it!

  • That is such fantastic news! I have been wanting the TNG Complete Series DVD set forever but I will be holding off longer and hoping now! As for this set here it's jumped just ahead of getting Turtles on DVD for me just because of how amazing I know it is now. The next time I get any kind of spending money at all which may be Christmas cuz of the new computer but still it's going to this so thanks for this series man!

  • Well, I'd call it more "speculation" than "news," but yeah. Hehehe...I figure I've waiting this long to get TNG, waiting a little longer won't hurt. But that said, the season sets are pretty reasonably priced right now. I'm kinda torn as to whether I want ot get the current sets or hold out for Blu-ray just in case...grrr....

  • Oh I know it makes me insane too! It's so hard though to invest in anything on DVD now that I have Blu Ray. So unless it's something like TMNT or Batman TAS that I know will never see an upgrade because of the undertaking or how it was filmed I won't. Having said that TNG is temping as heck right now.

  • You know buddy everytime I watch this 3 parter and hear/see how well this set was done it makes me so angry at the same time because if it hadn't been for TNG I never would have seen TOS. I grew up with TNG & it made me a fan. It's such as shame that the initial cost for a TNG remaster would be minimally 35M$ dollar. That's for rescanning the season 35mm element and redoing all CGI effects in 1080p. I already know it's a next to impossible but do you think Paramount would ever do it...

  • Hold on, did you say you had a standard def TV then give the set 5 for picture quality? I saw a little bit of haloing on some of the episodes in 1080p.

  • I've seen plenty of screenshots at 1080p from other reviews, articles, forum posts, etc. A little bit of haloing isn't unusual, and can often be attributed to how it was shot rather than edge enhancement. The point was, though, from ALL that I have seen of the picture quality from ALL my sources and what my own eyes saw on my yes, SDTV, it's a solid 5. No question. It surpasses the MOVIES for picture quality, and that's really something.

  • Not Zeds?! pshaw I say :P

  • Yeah, I know - gotta cater to my majority audience...

  • Don't feel bad. I'm Canadian, and I say 'Zee', not 'Zed'.

  • HEY ZARANYZERAK, sorry if this sounds abrupt. I am actually considering getting the Limited Edition WOODSTOCK 40th Anniversary Blu-Ray set that has a wicked-looking packaging. What do you think of it?

  • puree de comsmos (i know i spelled it wrong) probably is star trek in french.

  • stupid Yankee

  • excuse me?

  • Hehehe...yeah, that's what I figured. So it's "Star Trek Star Trek" :D

  • those lucky french getting two titles!

  • With how good this looks its even more of a shame how they wrecked the movies

  • Agreed. Obviously not done by the same divisions of Paramount... They'll get those right on Blu eventually. The original DVD releases weren't exactly spectacular either, but the later 2-disc versions were terrific.

  • Comprehensive.

  • You don't have some surround-speakers?

I thought I saw like some Logitech-set-speakers, at least one center-speak on top of a TV.

    Or is that for games?...

Hm, actually, you also so watch BDs on the PS3, so that wouldn't make sense.

Anyway, it usually happens that when you listen to a surround-mix on stereo speakers, it thins out a lot.

So it probably is the result you heard with the dialogue.

Awesome they put on two main audio-tracks though.

  • Hey, I kinda like how they did that with the aspect-ratio.

Perhaps not so much for the people that still have 4:3-TVs, but I guess it's time for them to get a new TV anyway. *coughmyparentscough*

Unless they have like some way of using both 16:9 and 4:3 screens, depending on what they watch.

  • I need to buy all 3 seasons of these

  • i'm an aspect ratio freak as well, I can't stand when things are pan&scan and they're a widescreen film.

  • Studios are really trying to push bu ray on consumers! This set is so tempting!

  • We are exactly the same. I also obsess over Aspect Ratio. I want my picture to be the way it is supposed to be. I watch my movies and tv shows on widescreen tvs. I do not care if I have black bars on both sides of the image as long as it is the correct image. This set sounds fantastic and is really making me want to start using my ps3 as a blu ray player.

  • i got 5.1 sound on my pc. i just got a 8x blu ray drive it sounds awesome . makes even the best mps sound like they are being streamed on a 28.8k modem

  • As much as I'd love to take full credit for that, I can't - I origiallyy did a half-Z, where I basically just cropped off half the image of the regular Z animation, but it looked stupid. Then my good YouTube friend JiiDee suggested I just use a small Z, which I think looks waaaayyy better! :)

  • Lol! Yeah, I thought of you when I said that...hehehe!

  • The easter egg you found,is the compilation of stuff from all 3 seasons ,becouse the doomsday machine is in season 2 ,i only know that becouse im watching it now on the dvd set,and is season 2 and 3 out on blu ray ?

  • Not yet, Season 2 is coming out in September and Season 3 doesn't have a release date yet.

  • I thought hi-def resolutions only supported 16:9. The Night Of The Living Dead Blu-ray does the same pillar box thing too.

  • It is 16x9 - the 4x3 image has been hard encoded as a part of the full 16x9 frame.

  • That packing is similar to the six film set. It would be so worth the price of the original VHS collection but I'm glad it's like $350 - $400 cheaper. :-D

  • Great review. Keeping in context with Star Trek, My gosh , where's your review of the new movie Bud?

  • Currently being edited. Part 1 will hopefully be up tomorrow (yes, I did an EPIC review of it and have a special guest along for the ride...)

  • Is it Rosie?

  • Hehehe - nope, not Rosie. :)

  • HEY ZARANYZERAK, the Star Trek set is beautiful masterpiece. Are you going to get the Star Trek: Animated Series on DVD or wait for the Blu-Ray?

  • There's no Blu-ray of the Animated Series on the horizon, so I'll likely just get the DVD set at some point. I don't know if film prints still exist for those, I know a lot of the Filmation library only exist on SD video nowadays.

  • The boxset is so worth $60.00, especially for bluray.

  • Hey Z how how are you? Have you seen The Mighty Boosh, The It Crowd, and/or Garth Marenghi's Darkplace? I was just curious.

  • I've seen a bit of Mighty Boosh, didn't really find it funny. I've seen most of Darkplace and really enjoyed that, and only seen a few clips of the IT Crowd - but it was enough to convince me to buy the DVD sets, so I'll be grabbing those some time soon!

  • bring back the a team was awesome..pity mr t couldnt attend at the end

  • Awsome review!

By the way, I dont know if you have seen a documentary about Star Trek called "Bring back Star Trek". Its about a British Comedian/presenter and he searches the original cast of Star Trek. Im not a fan of Star Trek, but I promise you that it is great, and funny! I really Recommend that you look it up if you have not seen it! Justin Lee Collins is the name of the presenter and the documentary was for Channel 4. He has also done things like "Bring back Star Wars and The goonies"

  • Cool, I'll have to check those out!

  • I'm an aspect ratio freck as well so awesome to hear that! Great job buddy sound just flippin amazing so can't wait to get it! Where's the best place to find the production order because I wanna watch it that way?

  • I'll send you a link. The best episode guide I've seen is the one at memory alpha - it lets you sort the episodes by production order, original airdate, remastered airdate or even by Stardate! Very cool.

  • Awesome thanks Z!
