ok i do all of that, but when i click on the romm, (well first when i directly click on it it says not found) but when i go to the zsnes, and find the hack, it says chksum: fail...what does that mean? what did i do wrong?

Its of course a lot harder then this. Because the main problem is the ROM itself. Not every Version will work. It must be headered.

If a Rom doesnt work after being patched with IPS - try to use SNEStool from SMWCentral. Then apply a header to your ROM with this little tool.

Well, for some reason I am unable to play a hack no matter what. I've tried both methods but neither work even though LIPS says it's been "successfully patched".

I already know how to patch ROMs as I tried out some Pokemon hacks, but every time I patch a file I always get a "bad rom" error and a "chksum" fail when trying to play it.

I found a ROM with the "U" and "!" AND I can play it on it's own without any patch applied to it with no problem. So it's definetly not a bad rom.

Any idea?

Never mind. Turns out I had a bad ROM. For anyone else, if you want to play the VIPs, don't get one from "Doperoms", it's not a perfect file for patching.

Yeah... that was my problem... it ran fine without any patch applied to it, but when I patched it, it didn't run.

On the other side... YAY, I can now play the VIPS. :D

I found a way to fix it. Turns out all I had a bad ROM. You can find a clean one on megaupload.

Search for "Super mario world rom megaupload" in google.

Does it matter if you use the SNES version of SMW, or the GBA? I have the visual boy advance emulator, so i wanted to use a gba version, and patch that, but its not working for me (emulator is just a white screen), so will i need the snes version and a snes emulator?

If you choose Online Tools at SMWC instead of Tools, you'll find a very helpful tool called the Clean ROM Verifier. It can tell you whether or not a ROM is clean. A bad ROM might play just like the original SMW, but will in all probability get all corrupted as soon as you try to patch an IPS file to it.

my problem with the patches was an unusable header in the hex coding of the rom... i got it to work by running the rom through hex workshop, i don't feel quite so bad now that i found out i'm not the only one that couldn't successfully patch the vips

Can you tell me IN DETAIL every step you have made. Every single one, don't ignore any detail you may consider unimportant, because it just may be.

Sure. Alright, so:

1) Go to the Wiki and click the FIRST game, the one that has AA and then foreign text.

2) I extract that into the EXACT folder I have the copy of Super Mario World.

3) I rename Super Mario World the name of the .ips, the .ips being MixA.ips, so I name the ROM, MixA.smc, and that's it.

4) I open up the ROM, I get THIS text on ZSNES: Super Mario World Type: Normal

Interleaved: No IPS

CHKSUM: Fail

Video: NTSC

Bank: Lo

And the screen just STAYS black.

"CHKSUM: Fail" means your ROM is bad.

Did you try opening the unchanged .smc file?

I'd try to find another one - smw is pretty easy to find on google and stuff honestly.
