  • i know a company that operates in newbrunswick, it's called dugas equipement. their biggest operations are selling engines for fishing boats and any other kind of marine applications...i don't know how to contact them in person, just thought i'd let you know, they sell and repair detroit engines like nobody's business, if you can manage to contact them i'm sure they can help you out.

  • sings just like a 4-53, and if you didn't say it was a 4-51 I'd swear it was a 4-53. different exhaust set ups and mufflers make for different sounding 4-53's. the old intl 1850 loadstar garbage trucks and city owned dump trucks had them and this one sounds a lot like 'em.

  • these sound slight different then the 453 detroit. sounds good man

  • Damn good sounding for a "little" engine!

  • Why does water come out the exhaust?

  • wet exhaust, it was a boat engine and thats how there cooled

  • Anyone out there who knows where parts are for this engine, please leave a comment or contact me. Ask your old Detroit Diesel friends if they know where any parts are! Thanks! Larry

  • i can try to hook you up for some parts man...i can't garranty you much but i know a place where they mainly work on detroit engines for marine application

  • That would be great! Any parts would be great to have. Thanks for offering!

  • i'll have the answer from the company sometime next week...only thing is that it's in new brunswick canada...i don't really know how far you'd go for parts but i'm pretty sure they can get them...getting them is another story but hey...in my opinion it's worth it considering how rare these engines are

  • No problem if they are in Canada. I would love to find rings and head gasket (and anything else for that matter. Thanks again.

  • I think you can use 53 series parts on this 451.

  • @Hotrodx199 They are pretty much the same, aside from the 51 series being loop scavenging instead. Meaning the heads can't be interchanged (of course) and the liners..... Or the exhaust manifolds. There are a few other things i'm sure but my memory always seems to fail me haha :/

  • I am putting it into a 25' Mexican Panga. With the wet exhaust, it should sound good and give plenty of power! Larry

  • yeah, until a part goes bad and you have to spend two years finding NOS piece to replace it. use a 53 series and keep the rare engine or sell it to a collector. dont put this rare engine in your boat and try to rely on it for daily use. preserve it.

  • So far, no collector has offered me a good running engine in trade for this collectors item. I would be glad to trade if the right person came up. Larry

  • hey, im just tryin to save you some grief... itd be a bitch to pull the engine out of your boat and have to replace it just because you couldnt find a source for a replaceable part that went bad. im sure youd rather run your boat than drydock it waiting for a small part to show up...

  • That could work in a large car or mid-size pickup or even a small tractor. That would be cool.

  • Try a very large truck, 453 engines weigh over 1100 lbs. People have trouble putting Cummins 4BT's into mid size trucks and they only weigh about 750.

  • I came right to this link when I read your post on the Yahoo DD list... it does sound quite nice at speed!
