A dividend is a portion of the companies profits payed out to their shareholders. What they don't give to the share holders is the retained earnings...which companies use to expand their business...earn more profit and increase the dividends paid to shareholders )or just drive up share prices...either or its a win for the investor). That's my understanding anyway. I'm no accountant so dont quote me on it....i think I would like to study it though. Peace.
