I just purchased my 4th 944 and I'm done. This thing is in perfect shape and frankly, I deserve it baby! (Having kept the previous 3 cars from certain destruction:) The 944 is a brilliant car and very under appreciated.
I graduated from a 1977 924 to a 1983 944, back in the early 90s. Raced the 944 to two consecutive championships, then retired with back troubles. Drove that car for five and a half years and sold it to a buddy. It was one of the best cars I ever had. He drove it another five years and then found a 1987 951. It hasn't been as reliable and trouble-free as the 944 was.
Now I have another Guards Red '83 that I'm in the process of restoring. Great cars, they are.
I bought my 1985 Porsche 944 late model for only $420 dollars. It has 235,108 miles on it and it still runs like a champ. This is my first car and I can't wait to restore it completely and keep it for many years to come... hopefully. After all, it does seem like I find something else wrong with it everyday, but luckily it's mostly cosmetic, and without problems along the way, what is a restoration anyhow?
@brianvan09 I have a 1983 944 non-turbo sitting in my garage in need of plenty repairs. The only good thing is that it still ran but that was at least 2 years ago. It needs a lot, including sunroof and center console gauges to be installed.
@brianvan09 I'm in Compton, CA. I haven't decided yet if I want to sell the car or not. I know that I'm just a YouTuber and people talk all of the time about what they have and won't/can't prove it. I'm going to take a pic right now and put it on YouTube. You can find me as Glenn C Turner, Jr if you want to see it.
I've had my 1984 944 for 3 years now and it is going on 300k miles. I hope I never have to get rid of it . By far the best car I've ever owned and very reliable as long as you stay on top of normal maintenance and do as much work as you can yourself. If I had to rely on a genuine Porsche shop for my work I may feel different but the car still turns heads and is a blast to drive.
@klnava1 really? i think ther the ugliest put on the 944, my fav is the ones i have the cookie cutters, they dont stand out so much, ther more set in...the 86 951 a guy owns that might be sellin it has the phone dials, i want it soo bad..
yeah i just picked up one in holland mi for just under $2000 rust free new clutch and rubber.. just needs interior work like all others though... granted it is winter and he had no room so it had to be sold i got one hell of a deal on one bad ass ride, (I currently own two now, a 84 and 87)
@alexzracer2008 the prices of the later model turbos and s2's will appreciate in value because there were so few built, and the 3.0 litre 4 is highly desirable, short lived engine, producing amazing numbers for the day.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FORD F150's FTW!! i took mine across the atlantic to drive on the audobohn!!!
The 944 is built out of rock and very reliable. They are getting on a bit now, but good service history will get at least 200k+ miles out of one. Dont use main dealer servicing, but a specialist Porsche service garage, and the bills should be no more than for a Ford or Subaru etc. Ive owned many Porsches inc 944S2 which was brilliant!! For cheap reliable car with decent performance and style, that will hold its money 944S2, Turbo, or 968 is well worth the money!! Brilliant cars!! last forever!!
@coltsuperocean10 Second that, mate! At Comeau Racing, we do nothing but 944's. We've been racing our 944's in the 944 Spec class since 2003, and with some great success. Please see Comeau Racing .com
Really? Where at? I know most of them are going to be high mileage but i want one that at least has had some of its parts replaced with newer ones. I don't want to buy a car and have to spend more then the car itself just trying to make it run.
I bought a Porsche 944 -85 two days ago for 30,000 Swedish Kronor (3920 US dollar) that was like new and had only been driven 13,000 Swedish mil (1 mil = 10 kilometers).
I bet you can find one even cheaper that have been driven a lot more but still runs fine. Note that this was without the turbo, if you want turbo you are going to have to pay like 3 times more.
Its not really that fast, it got about 160hp, my dads saab is faster. :P But then again he got turbo. ;)
I'm not sure about 0-60, I haven't really driven it fast yet. But its a well balanced car so I think it is fast around a track, its almost hard to get it to drift. ;)
I would suspect it takes quiet a lot of gas, but you live in US right? Your gas is dirt cheap compared to the prize in Sweden. ;) I'm only using/going to use mine on does nice sunny summer days. The rest of the time I'll use my Peugeot 405GTX. :p
The gas is cheap in the US, compared to our income in scandinavia that is. ;-)
In june we were on vacation mainly in Florida and we payed around 3,60 dkr. / liter, thatd be like 5,00 sek.
In Denmark at that time the gas were around 10 dkr.
But u gotta bare in mind, that wages inthe US are far less than ours, i talked to this priest and he said he made like $3000 a month, thats what u get in Denmark from the union when youre unemployed. LOL
forget about other cars hp, power to weight ratio is what you need 2 look at, I have a 944 turbo , parts r expensive, but not all parts, i get a lot of engine tune up parts from a local car parts shop as a lot of parts are the same as a Audi, which Audi i do not know but he always comes up with the parts, except a accelerator cable which i had to get off the internet.
It is a extremely fast car, i put koni suspension on it and it is unstoppable now.
That is so not true. I have an 83 944 race car, and all I do is change the oil...these are bulit proof. Now if you buy one that has not been taken care of watch out... but fix it right and you will love it!!!

Yeah.. 944 turbo is the car for me =)
Just hope i find one for a good price..
Another question, what about the 944 tends to require the most maintenance?
stoptakinallthenames 2 years ago
I don't know really, all I know is that if something breaks on it its really expensive. You have to order the parts from Germany.
But the person who had it before me never had any real problems. But then again she only drove it like 100km per year. ;)
I would love a turbo but I'm a 19 year old student so I don't have a lot of money, I been working on 2 jobs to afford this one.
smygdamp 2 years ago
I hope i can afford the maintenance once i get a job :/
Could i use this car as a daily driver? It isn't too impractical is it?
