i have the same engine but it's not a Santa Fe. Mine sputtered all the time after "someone" had messed around with it. I ran it at 80% for about 25 minutes foward & backwards. After that the engine ran much smoother and is as good as new
@knightbob81 Also, check for that black buildup on the contact trucks. You could have the cleanest track in the world, but if the contacts are dirty, it'll still buck, hitch and stall.
My first Bachmann gave up the Ghost, My life like of same age still works great! Both were given to me in 1995. Funny though, my American Flyer's both over 50 yrs old run good too!
it could be a dead spot in the track, that has been happening on my layout lately as im waiting on ballast. the track is only pinned down and can move around a lot.
no, i agree with mitch9521, bachmann stuff is crap. i bought an engine a few months ago, in december, and its already giving me issues!!! it looks nice, but doesnt perform well. and havent you ever heard of kato?! i just got a GG1 from them and dont regret my purchase! it is one of the best buys i have ever made. but i do regret getting anything bachmann. and the only reason i would buy from bachmann again is to expand my temporary layout! but i would much rather use unitrack
Cool Ive got a couple of these life likes geeps I got in a set my grandpa gave me. One of them is identical to yours the other is a dummy and numbered 3600. I also have a union pacific and a chessie system one but they dont work anymore.
@Darkstick27 Those LifeLikes can be kitbashed to make pretty decent looking models. And the power/torque is unbelieveable. I put some extra weight over the traction wheels, and I'm able to haul longer trains. It's not bad for being on the cheap.
life like is even worse!

I have that exact same loco, I believe it's a gp 38-2. It runs pretty good after not being used for over 14 years. It's a little noisy though.
