The Colecovision version had good response and timing, but the original arcade version is still the best of the best. That and Defender II (Stargate).
i tried to answer the question "I never got how they recorded full screen gameplay footage. Sure, today we have dazzles and emulators, but this is 1983!" :)
it's a direct feed from the system to the recording device. Either that' or they simply kinescoped, it, which means filming the TV with a specially configured motion picture camera, very low tech actually
Not that many, lolz. XD On average, an Atari CX52 controller will last you for 3-4 years. After that, then you have to replace the Mylar Circuit Reflex, which is pretty easy.
Think of it as driving a car with tires: those tires are not going to last forever. You will eventually have to change them.
I am still amazed that this best version of Defender is on the 5200 and Atari 8 bit computers. All the remakes have control problems (PS1 and 2). I would love to see a great port of Stargate/Defender 2.

"Tough game".. that's funny.. I've scored multiple millions of points on both my 5200 and 400.
One good tip is to use your smart bombs when you're completely surrounded by enemies. Especially in the case of Pods as it destroys many of the Swarmers in addition. Even on Hard difficulty you can rack up a staggering number of points, and numerous extra lives and Smart Bombs.
you can't explain all the complexity of this game in 2 minutes, but a good start anyway... For instance, you let a humanoid free-fall from closer to the top of the screen it will land and die.
As the world record holder for high score for the Atari 5200 version of Defender, I would have to agree with the narrator of that video. I can tell you one thing--You don't get 5.85 million points in one game for just mindlessly wandering around the playing field. You have to use the best tactics at your disposal.
Hahahahahaha... That turtleneck with v-neck sweater, and that hair... god I remember that damned look! Fortunately most kids didn't dress that way back then. It's no fun getting an ass-kicking after school! Hey, that dude's missing the medallion. Can't ware a turtleneck without a medallion! Just isn't cool!
Stargate was the sequel to Defender, it came out in 1981 where Defender was in '80, very advanced arcade games for their time. Especially the original, a landmark in VG history, Eugene Jarvis was the original designer
this is the atari 5200 version, those controlers where imposible since they where not self centering , it was always better to play the 5200 with the good ole cx 40 atari 2600 controller
That's not possible; the 2600 controllers are incompatible with the 5200 without an adapter like the very rare Masterplay Interface or the newer Redemption 5200.
Terrific game.

Every time I watch one of these 5200 Hint Tapes I can't help but wonder how many times they had to replace the controllers
