This is a fantastic review and you have a great style with a very interesting and easy to listen to commentary. I checked out your channel and was really surprised to find that you've only made a handful of videos. Have you thought about getting back in to making them again? Or was the experience not what you were looking for?
This is my favorite video game ever. I still play it to this day. It's so beautiful. Whatever comes out of Tetsuya Mizuguchi's mind is absolutely incredible. I'm glad there are people like you that truly appreciate games like this. All my friends hate this game because they think it's"annoying." I can't wait for Child of Eden!
When you mentioned that the game is supposed to be set within a computer I couldn't help but laugh. That's the very definition of recursion. Great video.
Electroplankton meets Lighttrax meets starfox meets the best genre of music ever created. I will go buy an x-box now. by the by, though none of the games i listed claim to induce synaesthesia, they are good as well~ LOOK EM UP~
@NentendoLover3000 Nice description! I've wanted to try out Electroplankton and Lighttrax, but I know what they are, and you've hit the nail on the head. Oh, and I'd advise you towards getting a PS2 instead. It's cheaper, and after getting Rez you can also get Odin Sphere, GrimGrimoire, Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil, Ico, SOTC, Katamari, Viewtiful Joe, DMC3, et al. It's now my favorite system of all time.
I have to admit. I have no idea what's so special about it. It looks like a Kingdom Hearts gummy ship flight, only with fancy effects and your targets explode into beeps and boops.
I think for me, I would have to play the game to truely experiance it. Unfortunatly, seeing it on youtube doesn't do it for me.
Never the less, I very much enjoyed this episode and I'll be checking out the other ones aswell.
@Altaranalt You're right, because what you're seeing is only half the experience. It's such a zen/trance experience when you play it, I wouldn't hesitate to get it if you have an xbox360. But comparing it to Kingdom Hearts gummi ship flights? OUCH! Those levels are a disgrace to the shooter genre, truly. If you've never played a good shooter, try Star Fox, Super Stardust HD, Panzer Dragoon Orta, or Gunstar Heroes. THEN you'll see what I mean about the gummi ship :)
My persoonal experience with REZ, is that after playing for more than 10 minutes my hearbeat tends to sync to the beat. And I also feel somewhat cheered up whenever I play it, most likely the beats change the heart rate which also increases certain brain hormones.
Regardless, It's great pick and play game. And a GREAT game whatsoever.
It looks like Panzer Dragoon ORTA on XBOX. I haven't played this game yet but from the looks of the video it does look like a rail shooter. Still want to play it.
@webfox100 Absolutely! They're both Rail Shooters, PDOrta's mechanics are much more complex because you can change forms, boost, and control your position when facing forward. I love shmups, sometime this summer I will make a video highlighting/comparing all of my favorite shmups: PDOrta, Rez, Ikaruga, Gradius V, Metal Slug Anthology, Gunstar Super Heroes, Star Fox, Super Stardust HD, Gamma Bros...did I miss any? I still need to play Sin and Punishment, DoDonPachi, and Radient Silvergun.
@Valkyriefury I have never played a Sid Meier game, my experience with PC games is more limited than with console games. Why do you say this game is worth remembering?
@TheGameLocker The game is deeply philosophical. Humans colonize space, and attempt to forge civilizations based on ideologies (fascism, capitalism, survivalism, environmentalism, humanitarianism, fundamentalism, scientific research). These conflicting ideologies cope with the world, and I'd ruin the storyline of the game if I explained why. It IS a turn based strategy game, but it has an overarching storyline that invokes curiosity and wonder, and it also provokes thought. Great game overall.
Irrelevant piece of trivia: My grandmother had a piece of modern art portraying human figure staring out over a dreamlike landscape. I ever only saw a brief review of this game, but the picture always reminded me of it, even though I had forgotten the name of the game and what the review actually said about it.
another form of synesthesia that i see in this - which may be worth mentioning - is the experience of thoughts and time occuring in a spacial dimension, which i have to some degree... i think it is meant for the avatar to be moving more through a sequence or a queue rather than space, further building on the concept that it's supposed to be a representation of the systemic processes of a computer in a synesthetic manner. this could be farfetched, but it's how i see it.
Actually, from what I've read that isn't so farfetched an example. Spacial perception definitely has to do with some forms of synaesthesia. As it applies to the game, I'm not sure.

Games you should check out are:
Beyond Good and Evil
Solomon's Key (Greatest game on the NES, really hard to find but you can find it on the virtual console and if you want it works well as a rom)
Fahrenheit

Now now now, no need to be so hostile.
I won't deny that this is most likely a amazing game, but I just can't really get into the mindset of this game.
The gummyship thing was just an example. I could've said Starfox.

"And it's all these elements that combine to create an experiance unlike anything else on the market."
You're examining games as art, aren't you? Should you be using a commercial word like "market"?
Fronzel41 1 year ago
@Fronzel41 My videos are actually not as concerned with "games as art", more like "games as experiences".

If anyone is into this kind of artwork bit of FYI would be that Rez was inspired by the work of a Russian painter named Wassily Kandinsky.
You should check out his work, its awesome.

@webfox100 That was my first impression, as well. The memory sequences, in particular, of that game stuck in my mind as being astoundingly vivid.
