  • Fuc&&*& awesome!!!! Had this as a45 in the 70's still catchy and amazing and just great

  • tell me who came to find this song because of the angry beavers episode "utter nonsense"?

  • I heard this song, on a local station one Saturday morning, while driving to my Naval Reserve drill weekend. I had just gotten out of five years of active duty, and found it somewhat difficult returning to a normal life. It has stuck with me since, and gave me an insight to my dad; in alot of ways, my dad was very much like the one in this song (albeit still living.) I love you, pop.

  • When we wake up to the truth of life, inspired music like this will emerge and flourish again, and all the uninspired crap that people call "music" these days will fade away and be forgotten. Search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says to learn the truth of life.

  • My son loves this song. Because he do, we all love this song now. He was 5 and now he's 13. He even told his teacher and he got the song for him. Now we all listen to it. And we all LOVE it.

  • Marvin sucks

  • I like the Pat Boone version.

  • MARVIN - NANDO REIS

  • PATCHES!

  • I remember living this life, left home at age 16 going to the laundry mat, thought it would make things easier for my mom, I was the second oldest of five, one less mouth to feed.Doing fine in IL!!!!!!

Ah Jaysus. The don't right them like this anymore I'll tell you that.

Whoever the three are who gave this song thumbs down need to sort their fucking lives out

  • I do agree, the kids of this generation, most only can relate to want, they have no idea of need!!!

  • I'm 24 and discovered this song about 3 years ago. Easily in my top 5 favorites. Powerful song...

  • The first time I heard this music, reading it's lyrics, bust out in tears. Damn beautiful song !

Melhor q a Marvin... essa é mais tocante

  • The Grammy on Pawn Stars was for Ronald Dunbar the guy who wrote this song, not for the one singing it.

  • Is that Nick Fury?

  • @chazdad sure looks like him doesn't it?

  • Marvin na versão dos Titãs!

  • and this dude's grammy is in a pawn shop in nevada. its in las vegas if u want to buy it.

  • I love this song so much. It takes me back to my childhood in the south.

  • I love this song so much.

  • this is just a sad ass fuckin song

  • @Chillyman010 Couldn't have said it any better.

  • @Chillyman010

In my opinion it isn't sad. It's is probably one of the most truthfully happy songs ever made. He was faced with adversity, and because of the good example of his father he overcame it.

  • GREAT SONG FROM MY YOUTH

  • so much feeling in this tune.... i need to listen to strokin to level out!

  • This video has the highest quality audio out of all the others ive seen on youtube.

  • llove it :)

  • I first heard this song after a long day of taking care of my sibs. See I was the oldest of the family and everyone was depending on me. I cried for me then stood back up and did what I had to do. I think at the age of 8 i started putting everything a head of me. I don't regret raising my sibs.I know now the things i went through then help me to become a strong find away woman. this song helped make life a little bit easier when only music could. friends laughed @the songs. I loved patches

  • Excellent - thanks

  • the black earl version is better

  • ....wait you mean I have to make TIME??

  • I LOVE this song!!! I heard it for the first time as a kid and I've been listening since.

  • let me ask you something, What time do you like to make love?

  • great song for blacks and whites

  • What a fantastic song!

  • here's a little history for ya. my father is blind and attended the Talladega Institute f/t Deaf and Blind. same as Clarence. Dad was the band instructor there. he taught all the instruments to the kids. darn good piano tuner too. anyhoo, Dad taught Clarence music initially. i often wonder if Clarence has ever given credit to Dad anywhere. presently Dad's with my Mom in a very good nursing home in Greenville Alabama.

  • diz go 2 eugene riley this waz his

  • best

  • My Father, a great man lost his dad at 17. He had two sisters and had to step up to help his mum. it holds great sentiment for him this song and it kills me to see him hear it. he has it on an old soul mixtape. I love my father he is a great man and my best mate

  • I lost my father when I was 11 and I first heard this song in high school. I'm a father now and I still tear up every time I hear this song.

  • I remember hearing this in 1970 in my dad's car, a 1961 Plymouth Fury in Inglewood, California....

Those days seem like in a different planet....

    Sierra Cuban, Miami, Florida.....

  • they sound like nice memories my friend

  • @kevintheshedend1976 Thank you......I was 17 then, now I am almost 57......It

seems incredible that this song is already 40 years old......In that year I worked at a

Shell gas station and the price of regular gasoline ranged between 19 cents to 26 cents per gallon......But factory workers in Los Angeles made enough money

in an hour of work to fill their tanks....( 3.00 to 3.50 per hour ) Now you may understand what I mean when I say that 1970 felt like another planet.

  • Still gives me chills every time. What a classic.

  • it's a brazilian song, by Sergio Brito e Nando Reis, very famous composer in Brazil, please listen in portuguese by Titãs, a pop robk group. watch?v=egAPUSILhDg, i'm sure you'll love it. Marvin agora é só você

    E não vai adiantar

    chorar vai me fazer sofrer...

  • @anarosalina do you really think it's originally a brazilian song? the name in portuguese, if you notice, is Marvin (Patches). This song is from 1970, Titãs' is from their 1984 album, if I'm not mistaken.

    It's a beautiful version, but it's a version.

  • I remember my mom playing this song for me every time we got into the car when I was ten. LOVED THIS SONG

  • This is the best song ever

  • Marvin, agora é só você

    E não vai adiantar

    Chorar vai me fazer sofrer.

  • I first heard this song on a record when I was 6, Im 21 now, and I STILL love this song!

I cant imagine how hard times were back then. We should consider our generation lucky. . .

  • @swissones same here ! i remenber this song from when i was a baby and im 20 now. my mom played it everyday.

  • @swissones these kids are way to busy on xbox live buddy

  • @swissones Yeah they had tough times, but now we have tali-ban, terrosim, war and fear, and one day someone from our generation will write a track about how tough OUR times are lol

  • @swissones Our generation is pathetic, I include myself. It's probably wrong to say, but we need a hard time to make us into strong, better people. The Great Depression may have killed many and impoverished millions but it brought families together and strengthened our resolve.

  • @swissones would you rather live free with patches on your clothing and being self sufficient or rely on a governmental body to provide for you and tell you what to do? thats how you justify considering your generation is lucky? i have to disagree...this song depicts the hard times of being free, may have been a hard life but it was what freedom is..being self sufficient and accountable for your own self. your generation will need to keep the world free..take time and find what freedom is

  • Fuck nick fury, Big Up Clarence...R.I.P

  • Horrible! Lol, j/p!

  • I also love this song, old school, old school all the way,

Mr. Carter got a "voice"! Thank you for sharing..

  • LOL. I wonder what Nick Fury would do to the poor, poor soldier that ever dared to call him "Patches"?

  • This is the song of my life

  • Love this song 5*S

  • Man, I love this song, thanks for uploading!

But hey, what's up with the totally unrelated (at

least I think) picture? Eye patch yes, but uh...

  • clerance carter was very good in his day if you like him he had some good old blues id rather go blind is 1 of my favrotes of his

  • isnt he called patches because his clothes are covered in patches cuz he's poor, not cuz he has an eye patch?

  • yes,,,,Corncod1..im also from arkansas...i was born in holly grove .country to the bone.haah..ive chopped and picked cotton and im sure you know what i mean..this also a song of wisdom..not many like this these days...by the way..im 48yo

  • Thanks, forgot how much I love my father.

  • Yuhh... I had to do this stuff in Core..

    Stupid Mr. BlinkwolT

  • Its a good song. By an odd set of circumstances, I now live in rural Arkansas. I hear real stories from some of the folks around here who grew up in circumstances of terrible poverty and struggle. I really respect the older generation around here because their lives were very much like Mr. Carter's song.

  • @CornCod1 take the effort you just spent ,to help another...etc.

    GOD BLESS!

  • ohmgg!!! i had to listen to this in my english class lik 10 times!!!!!!!!!!!

  • me too. then we had to write about what it was about.

  • great song!! reminds me of my mom when she was alive, she used to listen to this......catchy tho!

  • this song is a little catchy and kinda funny

  • I love this song... I like Clarence Carter's version the best, but Chairman of the Board's version is good too. It's sad, but folks learn from story songs. Artists don't write lyrics like this anymore... keep this music alive! Years ago, Bobby Gentry sang a song called: "Fancy" - then, Reba McIntire did a great remake - similar to "Patches" - about going through hardtimes. Thanks for posting it! Perhaps, it'll make people

think and appreciate those who had to

    struggle before us.

  • awesome i love this song. Brings back some Beautiful memories Great Post And Thanks To My Wonderful friend SpritLadySoul For the share. 100**************** and favorited God Bless ktf Love And Peace from Canada Luv Tustles

  • i love this song reminds me when i was little, still listern to it every month. You old music, it touches your sole.

  • this song is so sad. It always bring tears to my eyes. Didnt reba remake it to a song called fancy?

  • Comment removed

  • No - "Fancy" was about a girl whose mom basically gave her over to a life of prostitution. So the songs have different topics, but both show how affective our parents' actions and final words to us can be. And both songs are really good! I feel like Fancy got some good in her life b/c at least she became wealthy - poor Patches just kept slaving in the fields! : (

  • well i know that. I was asking was there a connection between the two because they sound so similar.

  • @1simaddict1 hope not

  • this song takes me way back i loved it always had me in tears

all the songs from this era had a wee story to tell and were a pleasure to listen to not like the bull they churn out now

  • this song used to make my daddy cry!

  • well, it's either this story or the other popular song of the day "poppa was a rolling stone"! gimme the damn gloves and put my ass to work!

  • This song came out when my father was 19, two weeks after my grandfather died, leaving my dad as head of his family, with 5 younger siblings to take care of.

The first time I heard this song, I was 12, in the car with my dad, and he pulled over to cry.

I wish I had known you grand-dad. Rest in Peace.

  • Now that's a good little story, sorry ya didn't get to know him. Peace

  • @boatkicker101 "I heard this song when I was about to start college. My own mother told me that I would never make it but, I showed her by walking across the stage."

  • @boatkicker101 Aww :( It's amazing how music can touch our souls.

  • @boatkicker101 Beautiful Memory Boatkicker. :)

  • @boatkicker101

    Cool comment bro

  • @boatkicker101 A moving account.

  • @boatkicker101

So sorry to hear this. Life is so sad for some of us. My dad died in my arms when I was 15 and he was 58. This song was out then and I thought I wouldn't feel like that again until that was when my mum also died in my arms and I had just turned 40, I still felt the same all those years on and yes I hear that song again. Life isn't always sweet for every child in the world. At least your dad had you there with him. All the best anyway for life for you all today.

  • When I first heard this song i was 11 years old and did'nt understood it (I'm swedish).

Whan I heard it at the age of 18 I just laid down and cry... From now on I will not complain when dad tells me to clean the house, cut the wood or the grass. There is people - younger then me - thats have to do a lot heavyer assignments for their own living... A very good song!

  • That's what I like to hear! Thanks for sharing.

I'm sure your dad is proud. :)

  • i heard this song one night on the radio, i was on my fourth year of incarceration, doing ten, this song helped me do that shit like a g

  • Man's biggest mystery and question is "What's the meaaning of life.". I've discovered it. It's just being alive. We are all here for a reason, although the reason may not be clearly evident . For me, it was the timing of my retirement from the Air Force and by chance happening to be home when my father suffered a heart attack and taking action saved his life. He in turn was here for my mother to comfort her and deal with her death from pancreatic cancer whereas I couldnt deal with it.

  • We all were here when my sister suffered a stroke at age 54 and pulled thru it, We were here for her. And the list goes on and on. Don't question the "Whys" of it...just know that your being here is fo be here at somepoint in someones life that needed you most.

  • this song is so hard to hear at times, like most people wanting to hear it its brings memorys of a dad we lost.R.I.P dad i love u and always will and i am trying not to let u down.

  • My Dad`s dying, I can see him with a shovel in his hand..He was on the USS Stanly in W W II.. He has untreated PTSD for 60 years. they got hit sometime by a kamikazee plane, I know it was hard, I cry and it hurts so bad by argueing w/ him, me drinking, jails, prison, abuse was my inheritance, Pray for Benny USS Stanly W W II. he fought and still is fighting be grateful we won

  • i understand u bro my died a long time ago and as oldest i feel these words to the centre of my heart. R.I.P DAD i am trying honest love always your son

  • I was'nt asking. I was helping out someone else out. I know that it's Nick Fury from marvel comics.

  • I had a chance to meet Clarence Carter, truly a great person!!

  • I get waves of billions of goosebumps and tears in my eyes everytime I hear this song. Growing up down south in the 60's I met salt of the earth people like this. Someone needs to make a movie about Patches.

  • ...everyday before i went to school , i fed the chickens and killed some too"...

  • chopped wood too

  • Whats up with the picture?

    Love the song though.

  • Kind of looks like Nick Fury!

  • Patches... eye patch... GET IT?

  • This tune is not about the division of labor or other such societal concepts....It is about an individual trying to teach his son to be a man AND about a boy who \loves and respects his father sooooooo much......it is about two people....not about two social groups........

  • Great violin-work. This sad song & the success of Dusty Rhodes helped me handle the 1980s.

  • Is this Fez Whatley?

  • Clarence Carter

  • Patches is a great old song

  • Oh thank God! I was mistaken and had confused Clarence Carter with Clarence REID...LOL. Ok I feel a lot better. Loved this song as a kid and always wondered if I'd ever hear it again. It feels good to hear it again.....Peace
