  • Was there a second half to this movie that I didnt get in my DVD case? These characters had no background and no ending to the movie...I was disappointed.

  • this is without a doubt thee most boring, lifeless, dumb movie i have ever seen in my life! it dragged and draggggged and nothing ever really happened....other than them walking and walking, quietly...no character development, no excitement, i found i didnt care about the characters at all. no depth and the ending...wtf??? :( a complete and total waste of time

  • This trailer doesn't make me want to see this, but probably will as Michelle Williams is one of my favourite actresses.

  • THERE WILL BE...WATER!...HORRIBLE!

  • @fOotztOwnROck Oh and BTW, I loved THERE WILL BE BLOOD!

  • I feel like the people who will like this movie are the people who like movies like There Will Be Blood. Im gonna check it out.

  • I like Paris Texas, There Will be Blood, No Country for Old Men, The Godfather, American Beauty, Dead Man, Twin Peaks series, etc. etc. etc. Should I buy and watch this film?

  • i loved it. reminds me of a novel on the subject also loosely based on diaries and letters called '' a small part of history '' by peggy eliot.

  • 'Aesthetically provocative'

Is that something like 'good tasting music'?

  • A must-see for me.

  • I loved this movie. Saw it in an independent/art house type theater this summer. I was absolutely engrossed while watching it - and the ending...I was just stunned walking out of the theater. It was one of those films that had a lasting effect on me the rest of the night and and maybe even a little the next day as I thought about it. This film is not for everyone, but for me it was as awesome movie experience.

  • @TheRoyReviews My 12 year old son has ADHD and this is his favorite movie. Nice to see it is also liked by people who pre judge others.

  • THIS FILM SUCKED NUTS... I SAW IT LAST NIGHT... THERE IS NO ACTION OR ANYTHING... JUST WANDERING AROUND IN THE WILDERNESS DOING NOT MUCH OF ANYTHING EXCEPT FOLLOWING A GAY INJUN... THIS WAS 100 MINUTES OF PURE FAIL

  • @ripster8675 your life is (your age) years of fail.

  • All Libertarian Ron Paul worshipers, should watch this movie, so they can remember the unified efforts that culminated in the foundation on the United States of America.

Our Pioneers lived in Ron Paul's twisted definition of "liberty". Where you could do whatever you wanted, and if you needed help, you had to be your own Consumer Protection Agency.

  • @EmpathyWorks Yes, let's stay mired in dualism so we always have to depend on master manipulators who seek control to fulfill their creepy desires for power. If we live properly, we live without fear. We don't need protectors in the form of bureaucrats. Your phony dualism creates a society of victims and oppressors. It enables a system that feeds off haves and have nots. I am no Ron Paul supporter, politics and politicians are the problem, but I agree with many of his ideas.

  • @demerc You went off the deep end of my point. I was talking about governments ability to build roads and highways, dams, irrigation structures, airports, farm investments.

Even now no company has a benefit of building a dam or a highway. As a matter of fact if a cities infrastructure isnt ALREADY built most companies will plant themselves in places where infrastructure is more appealing and accessible. My point was we all need each other and that no one can get by on their own, exclusively.

  • @EmpathyWorks I don't think I did. I think you are changing your argument. Your original argument reeked of the typical progressive beef with RP.The fact is, we need to promote a spirit of sovereignty and self sufficiency in society. It is the ONLY way that a society can be sustainable.Attack the root problems, not the symptoms. I do agree that we all need each other though. We have gotten away from this. This is the fundamental way societies worked in the past.Everyone were CREATORS not consumers.

  • @EmpathyWorks You must have absolutely no idea of the difference between the federal and state governments; the responsibilities of the federal legislature are clearly defined in the enumerated powers of Article I section 8, all else are left to the states, as per the 10th amendment. It's not Ron Paul so much that you have a problem with; it's the US Constitution and America's design. Maybe you should leave.

  • @CounterRevolutionary you totally missed my point.

Also, why would I leave? The Union didn't leave; they just beat the shit out of the south and changed the country as per their desire. God Bless Abraham Lincoln's wisdom in seeing that they couldnt be talked to but rather beat into understanding. :)

  • @EmpathyWorks LOL, you little fascist.

  • Why haven't I seen this yet?!

  • no end, freak movie

  • i thought the soundtrack was amazing

  • Oregon Trail: The Movie

  • I can't judge a movie I haven't watched...well I can but not fully until I see it for myself you know? But my favorite kind of films are drama, scifi, and horror, exploitation, shocker. Now I give me one and do something like this I probably won't watch it. But give me something likeI Casablanca and I I'll be talking about it for days. I know I'm bad with words.

  • wow so much, if u wanna watch this movie then do so.. if not well just don't. but i like movies like this. better then some of the crap they be making.. ok time to watch a good movie,, cya...

  • looking forward to watching this in a few minutes ..

  • Definitely looks like it is worth seeing. Certainly not that mindless, immoral junk Hollywood is always pushing

  • Of course it's inspired by a true story - thousands actually - pioneers crossing the midwest with nothing much happening. I opened an envelope this morning - true story - but I didn't feel the need to make a film out of it. I'm not a fan of Hollywood mega FX fests, but this type of film is not the answer. I would watch Transformers 100 times before I watched this drivel again. You want scenery - buy a poster - its a lot more entertaining too.

  • What a daring premise: white people are incompetent and dishonest and indians aren't. Art is supposed to be a representation of what's general about reality. If white people weren't generally competent and honest they couldn't have built everything indians didn't - precisely because they weren't those two things.

Of course there was exceptions and overlap, but that's not important. This is simply propaganda for contemporary purposes. History belongs to the winners - and today it's the left

  • Hah, you have no taste, representing the unwashed segment that praises insipid mediocrity and brainless entertainment...but do please carry on...

  • if having taste means sitting through the likes of this tawdry tripe then I'm glad I have no taste (are you related to the director by any chance?)

  • @tunezzzz Go and watch Transformers or yet another rehash of a comic book or cartoon series if you want action with nothing else. Meek's Cutoff is a fantastic film (inspired by a true story) portraying the toils of the pioneers of the American West. This is the realism of Manifest Destiny. The backdrop in all scenes are stunning and the acting is terrific. There may not be much to the story but what more can realistically happen in the middle of nowhere? I was on encapsulated throughout the film

  • Truly dreadful film. 100% of the 'action' and 90% of the dialogue is in the trailer. Well directed? - yes, good acting? - yes. But a nice cover and lovely typeface does not a good book make. The people who seem to like this are either in on an industry joke, arty types who still think the naked emperor was wearing fine clothes or those who do not like the types of film that Hollywood churns out these days. I have some sympathy with the last category but its no reason to like a terrible film.

  • You have no taste...that's all.

  • Excellent film

  • A great little movie. Michelle Williams is excellent. The rest of the cast is good too. Highly recommended.

  • wtf endings?

  • It's a slow paced film as protagonists travel through rough terrain is.It captures beautifully all the aspects of such journey:the loneliness, peace and quiet, struggle with supplies and own will to move forward, loss of inner belief for better tomorrow, doubt, etc. It captures countryside from angles that try to symbolize those aspects of such endeavor.Film's magic isn't in bluntly what's seen or spoken but in images of the journey into unknown. The suspense and of what's to come, hence such ending.

  • dat magic aboriginal with out of the blue chanting moaning music.

  • Saying this movie is a series of photos of the desert is like saying 2001: A Space Odyssey is a series of photos of empty open space.

  • Excellent film. Very well directed and acted. Great cinematography and background score. Will certainly watch again. My new favourite director.

  • The 'cutoff' in the title is actually a joke that you get at the 'end' of the film when the credits start folling and the story is nowhere near resolved. It appears that they ran out of money to finish the film so they just released it as is.

  • ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  • legitimate quotes from critics. none of that "What Times calls 'Smart! Sexy! Fun!", you notice ALL commercial critics say that? AND they repeat themselves? you movie watchers need to venture out of hollywood for a while, their dumbing you down.

  • Has anyone heard the Spill guys' review of this film? They did NOT like it ...

  • Oregon Trail the movie!!! They better caulk the wagon. I hope Michelle WIlliams doesn't get dysentery.

  • @TheRoyReviews for the ultimate grown up movie check out " stalker" by tarkovski.! ps. not the game but the movie.

  • @bradshawvincent - Stalker - an exploratory mind-trip, not for the feint of heart or mind. I think it would be my favorite third favorite Tarkovsky, though I have trouble finding anyone else who can stand it, heh. Whether he meant if to be so esoteric or not, I don't know. It's a film one can spend hours thinking about.

  • @TheWanderingPrimate - Stalker's brilliant, so is Solaris, The Mirror and Sacrifice - Tarkovsky was a genius his almost surreal exploration of the natural world is amazing, the everyday taking on an uncanny aspect that transcends time and space - truly beautiful cinema that moves into the realm of spirituality...looking forward to seeing Meek's Cutoff it seems to have real integrity and Michelle Williams is such a wonderful performer...

  • @mishmoore - Meek's Cutoff impressed me greatly, and I think Reichardt is a filmmaker to watch.

You explain Tarkovsky perfectly by ascribing to his work a transcendent "spirituality". He is a true artist because he does not blatantly display his concepts so much as he coaxes them out of the viewer's own mind. Such subtlety is a mark of great art, and when he describes his own processes and perspectives, they are clearly the words of a brilliant man. Have you read his book Sculpting in Time?

  • Just now saw the movie a few hours ago. The theater was full of old white people. I also manage to take a small cat nap too. I too am Native American,I hope that guy knew where he was going with a sewing basket, and a frying pan. I'm guessing a casino with a all you can eat buffet, with free water .

  • What's disheartening about the comments for trailers for movies like this, Cold Weather or Uncle Boonmee, is that people complain about them being "boring" or "pretentious" (which isn't true--just because you have a low attention span doesn't mean the film carries itself with an air of superiority), while the comments for movies like Transformers 3 tend to be along the lines of "OMG can't waaait". Sad.

  • @TornadoWilly I couldn't agree more, it is an Ikea world

  • @TornadoWilly Exactly. Movies like Transformers and Bad Teacher, etc. - basically the kind of stuff that is being peddled to us all the time - makes me cringe. Wanted to go to the movies last week to AMC TimeS Square, where they usually have a good two dozens two choose from - everything looked like complete crap: Cars, Bridesmaids, etc. Didn't go.

  • @lorororora Finally...a movie for you Laemmle-ites.

  • update:

So we went to see Meek's the other night, and the verdict is WOW. It is a visually magnificent experience, and I would recommend seeing it on the big screen while you can. Beautifully shot, and utterly realistic performances. I don't think a better portrayal has been produced of the days of westward expansion into the territories. Just be prepared for a contemplative piece, which seeks to (and succeeds in) evoking an atmosphere of barren uncertainty more than one of action or drama.

  • And the Oscar Goes to...

  • Hm, the criticisms I'm seeing here are actually convincing me that it's probably quite an excellent film - because they are just the sort of criticisms I always see from those who have trouble with any art which avoids or transcends conventional expectations. Some of us prefer craft and realism to formulaic spectacle. Some of us actually DO "look at pictures for two hours".

Reichardt's film Wendy and Lucy was gritty and evocative, and I expect this film is also. I'm looking forward to it.

  • @TheWanderingPrimate "White people are evil and the indians were noble to a man until we interrupted them" is unconventional? What planet do you live on?

  • @grantsinmypants2 - I have no idea what you are talking about.

"Transcending conventional expectations" means offering something more aesthetically and intellectually substantial than the normal effects-ridden, sensory-overloading, monomythic H-wood pap. I wasn't commenting on whatever "politics" you are somehow perceiving.

In any case, this film certainly does not attempt to make any such claims as you are ascribing to it. I see no reason for your rudeness (or incomprehension).

  • This wasn't a movie, it was a snapshot of what life was like on the Oregon trail. The scenery and the music worked well, but the acting and "entertainment value" really sucked. It was different, but not really different in a good way. Go watch something else instead.

  • My cousin worked on this film. I'll ask him if it's 'real' or not!

  • say what you will about the movie, the soundtrack is fucking phenomenal.

  • You've played the game, you've made the decisions of life and death, now watch the movie of it.

    THE OREGON TRAIL MOVIE!

    Rated D for Dysentery.

  • Probably the most realistic "western" ever made. Not just in terms of costume and other superficial trappings, but mainly out of how the characters speak and what sort of worldview the characters present.

  • @mycatwouldntcare Im not so sure. Id be interested to see if people in this time period were as loose with their speech, and as natural in their actions around other people as we are as modern people. And if not (which is what I would guess), then it would look stiff to us, but be a more accurate portrayal of how people used to be than many modern films where the only way you can tell it's in the period is the clothing.

  • GOD KNOWS WHERE HES TAKING US --- lmaooo

  • It's a good movie, gives some real insight into what it must have been like for those pioneers heading west

  • What does Michelle Williams say at the end. I think its "what do you see out there?" but I'm not sure.

  • What a f*ckin' misleading poster. Just have a screenshot of Oregon Trail and that's the sum up. If you want to see how realism was like back then, then you got it with this movie, but don't make it look like it's an action western with a fckin misleading poster you asses! You should wear ass-hats when you do that kind of sh*t on the red carpet!

  • guys, go see the review by spill.com.

  • @jdkjkjdkjdks

I know someone that did see this and hated it just as much as the guys on spill.com

  • @TheZoProductions spill FTW !!!

  • It's about time The Oregon Trail game got made into a movie

  • You know what I hate. Awful films that get away with being awful films because they're independent awful films and therefore must have some sort of "deeper message".

What the fuck is wrong with people? I LOVE going to see independent films but I also don't feel the need to give undeserved credit to a poorly shot, poorly edited, and empty headed bore simply because it cost $1 to make.

  • @abcdefh1992 Hey asshat, look up the word subjectivity. You're conflating your subjective opinion with some sort of objective standard in that post there.

Poorly shot? Some of the best use of academy ratio I've ever seen.

Poorly edited? Do you even know what the hell editing means?

Learn to accept that other people disagree with you, the world does not revolve around your subjective opinion, you are not God.

  • @abcdefh1992 before the "your not deep enough" or "smart enough" comments flood you. I wanted you to know i think i love you

  • Oregon Trail finally got a movie!

  • at least they didnt just remake anouther film

like true grit wich turned out shite compared to the original

  • I'd rather Cutoff my dick.

  • looks like Gerry in the wild west, fuck that shit

  • Damn this movie looks boring as hell.

  • This movie is not for kids ! its hard for them to understaind it !

  • @chutrra Understand what? There's nothing to understand in this film except that humanity is capable of making a film as painful as testicular torture.

  • The acting was good, but overall the film was extremely boring for a number of reasons

    1) Despite all the time sitting around doing bugger all there was no character or story development

    2) The most exciting part in the film was a woman making breakfast.

    3) No ending in the film

    I score the film 1/10

  • @ghm333 EW gave this an A-, and their reviews are usually pretty dead-on...I'm definitely going to give this one a try. It looks really interesting.

  • @ghm333 God bless you !

save us from more hell....and do some more reviews

  • bit . ly / steaming - moviez

  • finally a movie not based on a comic book

  • @Deepdesert There are very few no-bullshit films indeed. Try Tropa de Elite, Van Diemen's Land, Sauna (2008)...

  • @Tome4kkkk and also not playing at a theater anywhere near you! :(

  • @Tome4kkkk I disagree with that. There are plenty of no-bullshit films being made every week. This film is not one of those.

  • @abcdefh1992 Could you provide me with a list? Perhaps you could send me your imdb watch list via PM.

  • The Dark Knight- Based on a comic book

Superman II- Based on a comic

American Splendor- Based on a comic book

Scott Pilgrim vs the World- Based on a comic book

Ghost World- Based on a comic book

This film- - Not based on a comic book

What do you know? Sometimes, films based on comic books can contain big ideas and intelligent themes while art house films can be vacuous, pretentious bullshit with absolutely nothing going for it in terms of intelligence or entertainment value.

  • @abcdefh1992 and those are all shit too

  • @Deepdesert WHAT? Did you even see any of them? The Dark Knight was a masterpiece in my opinion, Superman II is the perfect Superman film, and Scott Pilgrim was the definitive film for this generation.

  • o yes

  • Paul Dano in this keeps reminding me of There Will Be Blood

  • @cannibalchef NO! don't even compare that masterpiece to this abomination.

  • This is an amazing film if you're an "arthouse" filmgoer. It's one of my all-time favorites and I've seen thousands of films.

Just don't go expecting an exciting Western or an acting showcase for Michelle Williams or Paul Dano (thankfully, no histrionics in this one)

  • @SDKfilmproduction

hi there, i really love these kind of film, so can you please tell me some that i should watch?

    Thank you so much!!!

  • @santaclausnm This particular film reminded me of (all for different reasons)

    Yellow Sky (1948)

    The Hired Hand (1971)

    Mirror (1975)

    Days of Heaven (1978)

    Gerry (2002)

At the Q&A after the film Reichardt also mentioned the influence of classic Hollywood westerns.

Overall it's pretty original though, which is what sells me on a movie in the end. ;)

  • @SDKfilmproduction

om...word hahahaa i keep typing, and thought what's wrong with reply from youtube today? :D

  • @SDKfilmproduction Did you ever see that episode of South Park called “The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs”? Basically the boys all get together in an attempt to make the most obscene book of all time. All the adults read it but end up loving it and over-analyzing it. The joke was that all of the adults tried to seem intelligent because they found symbolism and deep themes that weren’t there.

    That’s this movie.

  • @abcdefh1992 That doesn't really make any sense. First of all, there's nothing obscene or shocking about Meek's Cutoff, so half your very detailed analogy goes out the window. Secondly, I don't think people are over-analyzing Meek's Cutoff, certainly not me, so why did you reply to me specifically? I prefer to feel films rather than analyze them. Meek's Cutoff is such a film. Perhaps it's an allegory, who knows. What I know is that it's a crazy, existential journey with no end in sight.

  • @SDKfilmproduction what is so "artsy" about it? even this 2 minute trailer almost put me to sleep

  • @SDKfilmproduction Lol i just that exact same comment on a website called spill.com. The fuck?

  • @RighteousPsycho I doubt it was the EXACT same comment.

  • This movie is gonna be freaking spectacular, without a doubt!

  • Reminds me of Oregon trail the computer game in elementary school :D hehe

  • @deaththrash It would only be a faithful adaptation if someone dies from cholera, dysentery, or snakebite.
