If your gizmo doesn't show up, try x instead of w. It worked for me.

When I extrude I don;t get a new poly the top just streches like when you are makeing the box

in my 3ds max i dont have the cool gui u have like the cube in the top right of the view port

gimp is free and open sourced, most linux distro's have gimp and there is prolly one for mac somewhere out there but mac sucks
