  • He's good, but he's no Travis Barker. Blink 182 is way cooler than this anyways

  • The greatest

  • chills

  • To whomever likes fuckwit barker: he's a faggot little piece of shit and I'm going to break his fucking little pussy hands. TRAVIS IS DEAD you fucking assholes

  • comparing Tbarker to Buddy rich is a fallacy you cant compare a jazz legend to a punk pussy, false analogy.

  • We all like different stuff, but any drummer who knows his stuff has Buddy Rich in his top ten.

  • @warlordzephyr

Any drummer who REALLY knew his stuff has Buddy at the top and everyone else is a distant second.

  • Buddy, I don't know if your band would agree, but I miss you like hell. I miss those days when great music was played in clubs for enthusiastic audiences.

  • I never understand people's comments. Let me say this if I may. Buddy invented "modern" drumming. He was the cleanest, fastest most inventive drummer of his era period. The best ever? Who is to say. Vinnie, Dave Weckle, Omar Hakim, Steve Gadd. These are all great drummers, why does there have to be a "best"? Is there a best pitcher? Is it Bob Gibson or Nolan Ryan? Who is to say. Just enjoy.

  • theres only one thing about buddy that i dont like, his hunch other wise definitely one of the best

  • @celluoiddify who gives a fuck if you don't like his hunch, you cheap cocksucker

  • @meccaturbo lol

  • i'm not even a massive buddy fan, but watching this video was massively refreshing after watching tommy igoe's offensively terrible attempt to swing on this same chart. like buddy stylistically or not, he can swing.

  • Travis who? Seriously, if his life depended upon it...he could not drive this band across the street. Buddy stands alone at the top. I could name 1000 drummers I would pay to see before being forced to listen to one minute of Travis Barker.

  • neil peart

    joey jordison

    mike portney

    buddy rich

this is based of of technical talent and abiltity to play difficult things only

  • @maggot1111666

Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Billy Hart, Chris Dave, Dan Weiss, Mark Guiliana, Tyshawn Sorey, Ari Hoenig

  • @drifteromega Tony Williams not that good, not gonna lie Jack Dejohnette was rolling the entire time, yet very good. top 10 ever ide say. Billy hart no. I could play that. seriously? Chris Dave same thing rolling the whole time. Dan weiss was pretty good. Not special. college level drumming ide say Mark Guiliana, crazy rythams! raw talent not that good. Tyshawn Sorey Nothing. Ari Hoenig best of them all. None are nearly as good as neil peart his rio solo is better then them EASY.
  • @drifteromega

Sorry, ment this solo for neil

Neil Peart Drum Solo - Rush 30th Anniversary - HD

  • Buddy 12th.... you smokin crack?

  • I'm actually doing my own top 100 drummers, and guess what? Barker didn't make the cut either. Buddy Rich came in 12th. Here's my top 5. 1) Vinnie Colaiuta 2) Terry Bozzio 3) Steve Gadd 4) Dave Weckl 5) Mike Portnoy.

  • @Appollonious travis is easly number 1 you shitkicker

  • I'm actually doing my own top 100 drummers, and guess what? Barker didn't make the cut either. Buddy Rich came in 12th. Here's my top 5. 1) Vinnie Colaiuta 2) Terry Bozzio 3) Steve Gadd 4) Dave Weckl 5) Mike Portnoy. (Neil Peart made 6th)

  • @Dumbass4ever2001 the most likely top 3 would be Buddy Rich, Dave Weckl, and Vinnie Colauita

  • The sax soli is absolutely amazing.

  • Don't let Modern Drummer tell you who the "Greatest Drummer Ever" is. Decide for yourself.

  • Lol on the Travis Barker inventing the rotating platform. Buddy invented that too.

  • Was his left hand really doing that?

  • @swr112261 yes...lol

  • he was so on top of it.. jeez Tony or Elvin got NOtHING on this cat

  • Different styles of playing. All artists of the drums. Buddy definitely probably the most speed and pure facility but Tony and Elvin were more creative (in my opinion)....or at least there music was more challenging to the listener. Then again, they were all great for different reasons.

  • @drummer78 @drummer78 Tony n Elvin are monsters but there aint one lick they do that Buddy didn't do the previous generation. Elvin has this magic ride cymbal, but if you listen Buddy does all that. Elvin's music is more sparse than a Big Band where you can hear more subtilites. When Buddy is in high form with his Big Band the energy level can defuse some of the Buddy brilliance. Check out Buddy's brush technique to really see his creativity and control.

  • It's not about licks per se but about the creativity within their musical context. Coltrane needed a drummer like Elvin to go as far out as he did musically. It can't be broken down to mere licks. It's a spirit thing.

  • Hey alright, Rochester! Hometown pride!

  • About 10,000 drummers I never even heard of play better than Travis Barker

  • Don't compare buddy rich with other drummers buddy is in a class of his own .if any one still compares him with another drummer that person knows nothing about drums or how to play. Johnny stixx

  • @45echo

    Fair enough.

  • Ok, doing a stunt while playing an instrument does not make you the best at that instrument. If i jump through a ring of fire while fighting a lion while playing my saxophone that doesn't mean i'm the best saxophone player.

  • @jeremy5077 ....lmaoooooo....good point!!!!!

  • @joejacari Travis Barker, technique-wise, is probably one of the WORST drummers out there. And his playing is very mediocre at best. He plays the same thing as any other punk drummer. If you wanna talk technique, go watch some Mike Portnoy. Now that man has the technique down.

  • Hey, People that like Travis Barker : FUCK YOU

  • What's with the black shirt and weird, occult silver symbol on a chain? This isn't KISS or Black Sabbath.

Which brings me to the topic of the day: who's the best drummer technically, ever?

Well, real drummers know it's Travis Barker.

Ever see Barker's drum platform fly through the air, rotate, and then flip upside down while the dude is jamming a drum solo? Well, better get with the 21st century because that's how far drumming has progressed under Barker.

    Barker is today's B. Rich.

  • @JoeJacari Oh please, Jazz takes so much more coordination and technicality than Punk. I wont deny that Travis Barker is a great drummer, but the most that he has going for him is being mainstream.

  • @JoeJacari Yea, Tommy Lee did the flying drum platform first. Jeez, Travis Barker is not the be-all, end-all of drummers. He's amazing, but there are plenty of drummers on his level or better today.

  • @JoeJacari nah id say jojo mayer is closer to one of todays buddy rich's, (which is still not safe to say) We shouldent be comparing drummers or saying any drummer is the best in the world, even jojo is a great!!!! deal different than Rich, drumming is an art and everybody has there own preference on what they like, if you count the amount of drummers in the world that have been labeld the best drummer in the world - its kinda wacked!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Everytime I watch/hear buddy play, I'm left dumbfounded. Undoubtedly my undisputed champ. But of course there is no one best drummer of all time; different eras have their big names and legends to boast of. I just wish that one day, I can play just half of what Rich does. Half is enough for me. =)

Travis Barker? I don't mean to be mean, but everytime i see Barker's name in the same sentence as Rich's, I feel like puking. Do these people even know what they're talking about!? Rich is a LEGEND.

  • You can convert this to an mp3 at audiogetnow..com

  • I feel privileged to have seen Buddy play live! I don't believe that anyone has been better before or after! In typical fashion for Buddy, you will note that he uses his second floor tom for a coat rack! A practice for which he is well known. Most drummers surround themselves with loads of drums so they always have a target, but Buddy worked pure magic with just a four piece kit. Absolutely amazing!

  • @red03ram i was lucky enough to see him 3 times WAY back in the day .. when i was a drummer myself ( and NOT shabby at that)...

Buddy was the one to learn as many of his chops as you could ( IF you were good enough).. and incorporate them into your developing style. Eventually, you come up with something that could NEVER compare but other drummers/musicians could never comprehend WHERE the chops and riffs etc came from... until i told them " learned it from Buddy, man .. the teach"

    yup

  • "And saxophones, you gotta fuc**** be kidding me!!"

    "Shave your beards!!"

"What do you think we got a sound system out there for? You afraid you won't be heard? Is that it?"

    "That's a definite suggestion!"

  • I've always LOVED TRavis Barker...what a dude!!!

  • Even when he was aging Buddy Rich gave blinding intensity every night on the band stand. Heard him live in the eighties--mindblowing genius.....

  • mike portnoy, while certainly an amazing drummer, cannot be listed ahead of Neil Peart...Portnoy may have achieved more technical facility, but it was based on the foundation he learned from peart...thus peart is the original and portnoy is the derivative. that other drummer should never be mentioned in conjunction with buddy or neil or mike

  • Did anyone else notice the sizeable puff of smoke next to LaBarbera at about 2:30?

  • Rochester NY was very well know for Jazz long time ago..

  • rembember that , when you talking about buddy rich, you talk about the greatest drummer ever lived, so, any drummer great or not is not comparable with him.

  • Why is travis braker's name always mentioned in Buddy's vid comments? why compare gold to shit? there's no point really

  • @gallicharm yeah but buddy rich is not so rich off his drumming now is he

  • Anyone can drum like barker, it takes endless talent and time to become buddy richs level

  • lol travis barker is hot!!!

  • Really good, really tight band.

  • It's amazing, I got my first drum kit about this time (1973). I was 9 years old.

  • why the fuck is travisbarkers name on every fucking drum video someone fucking kill him already so he will be forgotten

  • @fruitbooting132 Pretty sure if you kill him he'll only become more famous...

  • @fruitbooting132 I agree..HE is a HACK

  • @fruitbooting132 an airplane pilot almost got him

  • @fruitbooting132 SECONDED!!

  • travis is pretty amazing.....but not even close being compared to buddy rich....in the actual listing of the top ten drummers of all time....travis barker doesnt even make the list.....top 3 were...and this is the official rating.....buddy rich, mike portnoy, neil peart

  • @Dumbass4ever2001 dude you don't compare da vinci with spongebob or gold with dirt but do what you want im just sick of hearing comment's on this would be when you got a legend right in front of you. If buddy rich was alive and at the end of a show you told him faggis parkler's amazing buddy would probably slap the taste out yo mouth! Tb's pretty amazing if you like blink 182 are a schoolgirl or wanna be punk that only listens to the radio...wtfm just stop no more barker comments please

  • @Dumbass4ever2001 portnoi and peart on two and three? hahahahahahahahaa

  • @Dumbass4ever2001 HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA r u fucking kidding me? neil peart and mike portnoy dont even make it up on the fucking top 50.....u ever heard of dave weckl, vinnie colaiuta, chris coleman, jojo mayer, ...thelist fucking goes on u retard

  • @paisteguy799 don't forget Stewart Copeland

  • @meccaturbo i would not put stewart copeland in the top 50 drummers sorry m8, hes undoubtedly great, but not nearly a virtuoso like chris coleman, jojo mayer, will kennedy and all the top jazz and fusion guys...stewarts time is fucking awful too...but i still love his playing in the police

  • @paisteguy799 I think you are a total fool to not consider him in the top 50. And, he is a virtuoso. Obviously you have been smoking crack for much of your life.

  • So did Buddy EVER use his second floor tom for anything other than to hold his towel? lol I've never seen him (live or on video) use that other floor tom, except as a table...

  • @snickpickle lol- every now and again like in solos he did. check out buddy rich stick trick video.

  • it funny how the kids on you tube always bring travis barker up, 1st of all buddy rich and travis barker are different, buddy rich is BUDDY RICH enjoy the amazing swing, second of all, travis is a decent drummer, he incorporates alot of world rhythms in his playing which is good, it gets my student talking and wandering, second travis barker has advanced the art of drumming in a way that no other drummer does,

  • travis barkers is a dumb comparing him with Buddy

  • Buddy loved is sax line, that's for sure ....

  • His left hand had more skills than a lot of professional drummers these days, RIP Buddy!

  • ye wanna be in this band? shave that beard and shut the fuck up!

  • travis barker can beat his ass

  • @scopions84 BOLLOCKs without Buddy there'd be no Travis. Travis's would probably agree.

  • the last set of Slingerlands Buddy used were a set of vintage 1956 Radio Kings (if i remember from the article i read a few years back) that were restored to original quality and presented to him as a gift. he continued to use those until his untimely death. there is a set of Slingerlands in the Smithsonian that Buddy played, but i am unsure on what era he used them.

  • did buddy always use slingerlands? ive seen him play ludwigs a few times but maybe they wernt his kit

  • Buddy started his career on Slingerlands, but he had various contracts with other makers as well. i have seen him play Rogers, Slingerlands, Ludwigs and probably a few others. he started and ended his career on the Swingin Slingerlands.

  • awesome, thanks

  • @cadillacdude1975 Buddy also played Vox and Fibes drumsets. This was around 1967'ish, and he didn't stay with either of them very long.

There are a few videos on YT of him playing the Vox set, and one or two with him using a black Fibes set ~

  • yeah i have seen those. i wasnt sure on what they were or who made them. fact is Buddy could have been playing on kitchen pots and pans and it would have sounded just as good.

    RIP Buddy.

  • i was on a travis barker video telling someone who didnt like him that at least travis fans dont go round saying hes the best on videos of other drummers; but youv'e just proven me wrong. travis is a good drummer, but by no means the best in the world; and thats coming from ma travis fan. but you cant be excused for saying that on a buddy rich video

  • I very much enjoy this style of jazz. Any recommendations on records with nothing but this? I've been listening to nothing but Mr. Rich and Mr. Ferguson for the past few days.

  • @anthonyritchie Buddy's records on the Pacific Jazz label were superb.

Swingin' New Big Band, Big Swing Face, The New One, Mercy, Mercy and Keep The Customer Satisfied are my favorites from that era in Buddy's career.

Also try these records - Stick It, Rich In London, Class of '78, and Buddy Rich Plays and Plays and Plays.

These are all great records from Buddy. He has many others, but these are some of his best.

    Hope this helps ~

  • Check out "Big Swing Face"!! :) ('66, I belive)

  • The most impressive thing to me is the sax section beginning at the 2:15 mark.

    They're as tight as I've ever seen/heard.

  • "Swingerlands" are what they should have been called when he played them.

  • Fantabulous!! juz cant go out of tune while listening 2this album,,,,, its damn awesum,,, dowloaded the entire album for free at DownloadMusic[.]im , ..

  • Great Grandmaster Rich...

    Gone But Never Forgotten!!!

  • that swings

  • @180was Rushing the tempo? What?

    Are you even a musician?

It's called LEADING THE BAND, sonny boy ~

  • I agree, tempo does push at the start of the solo section. Not a lot, but it's enough to be noticeable. It's like the difference between 240 and 260 bpm.

  • buddy rich could never be over rated. this is probably one of the most successful big bands of all time.

  • Comment removed

  • Great performance.

I sure hope Buddy didn't catch the band blowing clams this gig!

  • Very good, great sound, all marvelous. The drum fits so well in the music!! Excellent!!

  • If only he played in a pipe band!

  • amazing! does anyone know the arranger for this?

  • Don Menza. The studio recording is from the "Roar of 74" LP. This live version is just great!

  • My schools Jazz Ensemble is playing this right now, and its this same arrangement! 2nd alto representin. GOD ITS HARD. But fun, once you got the groove going

  • makes me wanna watch cowboy bebop

  • Between 144 and 152 BPM

  • this guy is a MONSTER!!!! man if i was as crazy on the drums as he is all i would do is play!!! man...this guys is officially the BEST

  • I keep coming back to watch this one!

  • 3:30 holy shit left hand

  • tru dat!

  • Buddy Rich was as racist as Baraka Obama, come one get a clue, he was the only white guy asked to join Count Basie for a while, the only whit guy ever asked to do so. Count Basie's band was all black all ways. But Buddy was just too good and when PaPa joJones was drafted, Buddy stepped in.

  • Lol, he wasn't the only white guy to join basie's band, he had a bunch of white guys like butch miles, lin biviano and a few others joined his band and butch played drums

  • Buddy during his brief Rug era. Geniuses shouldn't care about their hair :D

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome playing. So he was a racist, oh well. I'm sure there's tons of musicians/celebrities out there who we all adore and respect who might be just as racist or even more so. The only difference is that the public doesn't know about it (yet). Or maybe your neighbor, close friend or cousin. Who cares, really, unless it affects you personally?

  • their is little doubt among experienced drummers that Buddy was ( is) the best. (and he only had a few drums)

  • Buddy's one guy I would want to fuck with if I worked for him.

  • Weird he's racist but he play's music made by black people.

  • I remember playing this chart. It was pretty tough.

  • Simply AMAZING!!!.

    Great chart

  • Nice Sax solo. Pat LaBarbera makes this chart sound so easy!

  • he basiklly had problem with black peapol thos ho play drumms know about this for many years.

  • ! thing onlly i dint like about baddy he was very rasist

  • how was he rasist?

  • yeah zat...and he also had horiffic spelling...he would often do insane "racist" spelling errors such the infamous time in 1968 when he put an exclamation mark in front of the sentence like he was some form of crazy spic or the time the following year when he used 2 L's in the word only (onlly) and on that same night spelled "didn't" as "dint" which clearly means "dumb interferring negro throats"...he even tried to have his name changed from Buddy Rich to Baddy Rich (cause he was a bad "rasist")

  • Hahaha, nice one! I hate bad and lazy spelling man.

  • You sir! is a fruit :D

  • Holy cow do his charts ever scream! Having that tight of a band at that speed! I could only dream.....:D

  • It was his solo. Soloists almost always stand up when it is their solo... It is called tradition. Respect, yo! :P

  • was that the time he chewed out his band ?

  • Yeah, that was the one and only time ever that Buddy chewed someone's ass.

  • Naw. The band he chewed out were a bunch of kid's, fresh out of college that were partying all night and playing like shit! Buddy's band's always consisted of world class musicians and these idiots were an embarrassment to the music Buddy felt needed more respect and to the hard earned respect he had achieved.

  • I don't know that could possibly be cause that dude has a beard!! and in one of his rants he talked about that beard!

  • This is a bitchin' arrangement. Buddy always used good writers like Olver Nelson or Bill Reddie. Playing to these records helped me get over the hump in learning to play the music.

As for handling the Barker fans, just tell 'em the greatest drummer ever is Mickey Dolenz. Then maybe it'll send them over to graffitti up the Monkees videos.

  • Damn! That sax soli is awesome! You'd be hard up to find a tighter section. Listen to 2:22, its like 1 player playing 5 different notes.

  • If you like this type of sax soli, check out a band called SuperSax, in case you already haven't.

They transcribe Charlie Parker solos and play them in 5 part harmony.

    They are superb ~

  • lol another fag boy barker train rider. Travis will never ever be able to hold a candle to buddy. ones that come close are Dave Weckl and Mr. Pert. Travis is not even in teh same league, much less the lineup. go troll elsewhere.

  • Don't forget Steve Gadd :D

  • Check out Louis bellson and gene krupa. Thats the level you want up there with Buddy. Vinnie colliuta is great too.

  • yeah Gene was great too, i will have to look the other two up. the names dont ring a bell.

  • Watch Buddy and Gene do a drum battle here on youtube! It was on the Sammy Davis Jr Show. I love Krupa and have great respect for him, but Buddy hand's him a new one!

  • You've got to look up Art Blakey too. Though not of a Big Band setting, he's probably my favorite drummer to date!

  • obviously u know nothing of real drumming

  • Put a metronome up to this hah! Buddy is a monster! :D

  • He's awesome!

  • Buddy Rich was a youngster...Good video! tku

  • lol...buddy...with hair...

  • great drummer, great musicians, but i cant get into big band jazz

  • maybe that's because you're not really listening to it. don't think of it as anything but a musical arrangement

i believe if you're truly musical, you will have no problems with this at all

(what do you normally listen to?)

  • yeah, thats true pleom...in this type of music there are many typical riffs found in everyday rock or even pop songs, I think this stuff scares or intimadates some people, basically when its played its played or "sent" out quickly with tons of information thrown at you...its almost like someone telling an interesting story while talking pretty loud and speaking very quickly.

Some of us love that type of delievery (I'm one) but some react like its a freaky loud and fast foriegn language.

  • Looks like Richie Cole on Lead Alto???

  • Ray Rinker and Brian A. Grivna on altos.

    Cole left Buddy's band in 1971 ~

  • Ok thank's . Cole can Blow. take care

  • @MarkR1957 His name is Ray Ricker and I'm married to his daughter. He's a fantastic musician and a great guy!

  • Wow, what a bunch of badasses you clowns think you are. Get the fuck over your periods ladies.

  • Comment removed

  • hahaha guitar playing fuck, nice. but it's not about the money man its about the love of music. duh

  • LOL... I just think I assigned a new stereotype.

Little noobs, I think what you're trying to say is that Travis Barker is a very good drummer. Then why don't you say that? If he's as awesome you say he is, then he doesn't need to be compared to other "lesser" drummers.

    LOVE this song~!
