I think Donnie Dacus was in a no-win situation. If Jesus Christ himself came back for the second coming, learned to play guitar and joined Chicago he wouldn't have compared favorably to Kath. Kath was just in a league of his own.
Man, I don't like that guy on guitar. And how I dislike his song "Alive Again." He blows the solo completely at the end of this video. I don't need to hear Terry Kath recreated note for note but I don't need to hear a blonde Frampton look alike showboating and using too much fuzzbox. This much is true: Chicago was never the same band without Terry. This video proves that. Sorry if I'm being harsh.
Everytime I watch this video I can hardly believe what happened to Chicago. They were so great in the beginning and then they sadly sold out. The fact that some of them are still hanging in there to this day is curious. One has to wonder if it's just for the $. After Terry died it all went terribly wrong. It's also hard to believe that these guys can't bury the hatchet. 6 of the originaL 7 are still with us. It is so sad that they cannot find a way to get together at least once.
this isn't a bad live version with dacus on guitar. he brought his own style. it's still not as good as terry's playing. but, he wasn't bad. unfortunately, this is the period when the band's popularity was in decline. but, they still sounded great live. they just couldn't sell albums like they did earlier in the decade or get any hit singles.
Cetera is amazing ! His singing ability put Chicago on the charts and as one of the legendary bands of the 60's,70's and early 80's. He cannot be replaced ever !
lol, dacus is a mouse compared to dawayne and terry on guitar. Hes not bad though, the only bad guitarist chicago has ever had is keith howland who imo just sucks.
yeah the dacus is kind of an annoying little prick. even peter seems to be laughing at him. wasn't sure what he was all smiley about at first but yeah, i think it's directed at dacus' antics.
@Pine Knob is an outdoor venue with lawn seats back on a hill and then the pavilion seats which sit under a large shell On a nice day it is great for a concert . Name has been changed since to DTE Energy Theater [Clarkston Michigan] Unless there was another Pine Knob out there!
One of my top three favorite Chicago songs from my all time favorite group. Too bad they went through a period where they were doing some heavy drugs during concerts, just look at Peter Cetera's eyes. Glad they straightened themselves out. I still wish Peter stayed with the group, however. After Terry Kath died is was a major loss, then when Peter left they went down hill fast.
Maybe if you laid off the crack you could see straight!
And yes after Terry died and Peter left the band was never the same. It must have been very difficult for all the guys to deal with terry's death. But life goes on...and so has Chicago. Great to see them celebrate 42 years! Not many can say that except The Moody Blues!
You shouldn't lay into Donnie so hard. He's a great guitarist, and actor(HAIR). We all love Terry, and it seems alot of people just didn't like Donnie because he wasn't Terry. He was just put in the unfortunate position of having to fill shoes of a recently deceased but beloved part of a band with a huge, and passionate fan base. Chicago has had some incredible musicians come and go over the years. To me, that is almost the beauty of the band. The music ALWAYS comes before the faces.
Hey...instead of giving a "thumbs down" just tell deputydog4578534 it was Donnie Dacus. Dacus lasted @ 16 months w/the band. Bill Champlain didn't come into the band until early '80's. Bill played keyboards and guitars when he first started w/them. Now I think he's mainly keyboards.
i hate to sound like a chicago know-it-all but i saw them several times WITH terry and all i can say is....this guitarist should find a nice garage band to play in. it kind of looks like donnie dacus but i didn't get a close look. i have more guitar talent than this man.
but...thanks for posting the vid. it's always good to see peter singing my absolutely favorite all time song.
I was at this show. I was sitting in Row 1, beer on the stage, to the left of Cetera. Chicago was always terrific at Pine Knob, saw them numerous times and was never disappointed. They used to sell out an entire week there every summer. Great memory.
OK, just in case the members of the band ever come to these sites you guys need to get Peter Cetera back for at least 1 more tour before you all hang it up. As a fan since CTA, at 58 yrs old I need one more concert before the old folks home calls. At least try to get it together before all of your old fans become unable to groove with you, there is no band today that can come close to you.
Everything from this concert is priceless. The man with the golden voice! Peter is really giving it his all with that beautiful voice, letting those notes ring out and holding onto them fully. And the band as a whole is on point. What a treasure!
Regarding Peter's appearance... I think we're just seeing the effects of him having a GREAT show and being really into it. There are some other clips from this same concert on here and he is at the absolute top of his game vocally on all of them.
Okay, now you're talkin'! My favorite Chicago song! Peter does seem a little haggard, but maybe it was because it was the last song of a long, tiring concert. He also looks a little heavy. Must have been his Elvis period. Dacus looks out of place. Bless him for stepping into a difficult sitation, but I can see why he didn't work out.
What an awesome video!!! This song, which is one my my all-time favorites, originally came out on the Chicago VII album. It was written by James Pankow, who is my favorite trombone player.
Hey sopranoppc, where did you get this video footage? I have been looking for this particular concert since 1979 when I first saw it broadcast on "On" TV.

Peter Cetera does such a great job here, along with Robert Lamm on keys.
Donnie Dacus is bouncing around like it's a disco tune, no wonder they fired him shortly thereafter.

I don't think this guitar player quite fit in. He was good but a little to much flash
a showboater. Perhaps the band was giving him a break. I just can't put my finger on it. Terry Kaths shoes were hard to fill.
Terry was soulful this kids not.
