The P-51 could not have been as successful as it was without its British designed engine. There was no American engine with the power that was needed to fight against Germany fighters.
The American bombing campaign was a success in part because of British engineering.
@acoow -Exactly. The Rolls Royce Merlin made the P-51 the legend it was for exactly those reasons. Without it the P-51 was really kind of average. Not bad, but definitely not GREAT.
@acoow - I agree with the overall statement because of the hindsight of results. However, the US had the Pratt & Whitney R-2800. It was used in the F6F Hellcat, the F4U Corsair, and the P-47 Thunderbolt. The P-47M and N series had range comparable to the P-51. However, British engineering needed US manufacturing (Packard) to produce enough of the Merlin powerplants, not just for US fighters, but for RAF aircraft as well. I believe that's why it was called the Allied war effort.

New Zealand fought Japan (even there, American was not alone), was part of the invasion of Italty, and fought the Nazis in Western Europe. New Zealand also had battle victories fighting on their own. 9-10 April, 1945; 18-19 April, 1945.
America did its part, but certainly did not do it alone.

@SoCalDualSport The P-51 was an American fighter that was able to escort B-17 bombers all the way to Germany, giving those bombers a fighting chance to get to target, drop their payload, and return to England. The P-51 could not have been as successful as it was without its British designed engine. There was no American engine with the power that was needed to fight against Germany fighters.
The American bombing campaign was a success in part because of British engineering.

@acoow -Exactly. The Rolls Royce Merlin made the P-51 the legend it was for exactly those reasons. Without it the P-51 was really kind of average. Not bad, but definitely not GREAT.

@acoow - I agree with the overall statement because of the hindsight of results. However, the US had the Pratt & Whitney R-2800. It was used in the F6F Hellcat, the F4U Corsair, and the P-47 Thunderbolt. The P-47M and N series had range comparable to the P-51. However, British engineering needed US manufacturing (Packard) to produce enough of the Merlin powerplants, not just for US fighters, but for RAF aircraft as well. I believe that's why it was called the Allied war effort.

These were the first ever attacks directly aimed at civilians, and hundreds were killed. Only 20 years later memories of these attacks were still fresh in Europe when Germany again started attacking and invading other countries. Yes, terrible things done by all sides, but those that started both World Wars are to blame for what followed.

Our bomber pilots have even been quoted (when asked how they felt about bombing civilian cities) "If they make a sandwich for the enemy soldiers, they are our enemies too". When I watched the first video and this one, I almost cried. it brings honor to those young and courageous pilots, gunners, bombardiers, flight mechanics, crew to bring honor to their respected countries, those years were very tragic, I salute you, even though their Aircrafts were badly damaged and in dire of crashing, they still fight to their last breath even though hope is gone to return to their homes to see their families and be with them one last time. may God Bless them all.
