All of this over-priced, fashionable, store-bought stuff goes against the spirit of Bushcraft. The brand consciousness I'm seeing lately in the very people who like to think of themselves as rugged and independent individuals is more than a little ironic. Some people are actually BUYING tinder and fatwood. Way too much MarthaStewartHipsterPoseurCrap going on here.
It costs $375 because the dollar is not worth anything any longer. Most of us have become so used to buying imported junk, that we did not notice the fact that our dollar now has very little buying power.
Keep your eyes closed to this fact and keep complaining about the costs of American-made quality products, and just sit back and watch middle-class America be wiped out.
OK kids, time for you to get back to your video games.....
I like the look. Reminds me of some of my old packs.
But explain to my the logic behind not giving it a frame.
The price is not at all high, for a good pack, but considering how technically superior many other options in that price range are, the people buying this would most likely do so, based solely on looks. And that is a bad way to choose a pack.
This is a beautiful pack, Mike. I love the design. Everything about it is designed how i would like my ideal pack to be. I am very impressed with all of the ways you figured out how to store gear common to bushcraft. The workmanship and material seem to be superb. the heavy duty canvas, leather, and brass rivets are so cool.
I love the whole thing.
Its a little out of my price range now, but some day, i will have to own one of these.
The brass? buckles will weigh much more than ABS/plastic fittings? Leather straps will fatigue quickly if repeatedly soaked and stressed without a regular proofing maintenance regime?
Looks like an awesome bag. I was looking at it but it's a bit steep, and also smaller than I'd like. Still beautifully designed though, and well thought out. Also may I ask what kind of sleeping bag you use? I'm looking for something more compact than what I have and that would probably fit the bill
Ditch that full length sleep pad for the shorter ones, your legs wont know the diff. and size and weight reduction is worth it. I have ditched mine completely and just build my own in the bush
Duluth doesn't publish reviews that are less than four stars on their products. FYI on the shady overpriced company that offers high prices with diminished returns. Frost River is sooo much better of a socially responsible company with the same products made with more attention to detail. Yes, I'm done with Duluth.
I liked you explanation of how to pack it. As one other poster said I was taunt heavy goes in low, I'll have to try it your way.
As for the pack, really I switched off when I saw leather and metal. But there is the functional nylon and plastic compression straps. Which is it? A backpack or a handbag? You saving weight, making it last a lifetime, making look bushcrafty? Jack of all trades master of none?
I did like the pockets behind pouches, but if you go too far back, your replacing the pro
I had one and ended up Craigslisting it. This thing IS all of these things- Good not great, heavy not light, EXTREMELY overpriced, will last forever, features weak although the sleeves behind the pockets are nice, poor location for your heavy ax, American Made. If it were $150 people would be lining up to buy it. As is a few are buying and most are modifying. It's like a beta version only the designers must have thought they only needed input from themselves and put it up for sale.
Beautiful pack. What are the advantages of having a pack like that made of older materials vs a modern pack made of nylon and an internal frame? It seems you can't carry as much weight comfortably. Why did you prefer canvas and leather? Love your videos, good work!
Gd clear video, but you missed of some information, what capacity is it? What material is it? What are it's dimensions? Also just a note I would have put a rubber base to it so it doesn't get wet when you set it down.
Looks like a nice pack. I did notice that the way it was packed that if it rained water would run off the top and into your saw and knife. I think the top flap should be slightly longer.
Awesome pack however one comment in regards to how you pack. I worked as a backpacking guide and most everyone I ever worked with keeps the heavier items near the bottom. Putting the items low and close to the spine helps to keep you stable. Try to put 2-3 gallons of water in a pack low and then hike a bit and then stop and repack it with it higher. You are much more top-heavy, unstable and more likely to injure yourself.
Really nice! I hav e to say, you don't often come across a pack thats both practical and looks good! I also think the quality of all your videos is good and clear. Can I ask where to buy this fine item in the UK? Cheers.
hey there thats a great looking pack that seems very functional, i just had a question. what are the advantages/ disadvantages of the waxed or unwaxed versions? does the waxed version just help keep it a bit dryer?
Question for you: does the axe sleeve open at the bottom? If I have a longer axe, would it slide through the sleeve, or stick up on the top? (I'd prefer it slide through, personally.)
Thanks for a beautiful product, and a nice presentation.
man i love that pack. do you know how many square inches it holdes for a better understanding of the size. i can tell you put a lot of thought in designing it and am thinking of buying one myself.
@OregonBackpacker Please go to my website at bushcraftnorthwest(dot)com where you will find more information and all the measurements on the pack. Thanks for watching. ML
@BCNW1 sorry about that. i have never owned a duluth pack i know what there guarantee is but how do they hold up on it is it no questions asked or? Also this pack obviously is not waterproof but how well does it shed rain? JL
@OregonBackpacker In my experience, Duluth Pack has stood by their products 100%. They know it is an expensive purchase and will do whatever necessary to fix the products they sell and make you happy. The waxed canvas sheds water better than the plain, but as you said it is certainly not "waterproof". When I'm concerned about water, I use a large waterproof liner for the main compartment that everything goes into just as you would for a canoe pack. Thanks and best wishes, ML
@tobigforyou yes Its The most expensive in the world but its also the highest quality in the word also-and no I dont own one ,cant afford one either and never even seen one in person but I can tell it would last a life time without breaking and possibly hand down to your childrens children.
I was so excited when I first saw this on your website, but after looking at the price, I came to the conclusion that this is the most OVERPRICED backpack in the world!!!!
I almost bought it. but quickly changed my mind after seeing it is $370 ridiculous.
No doubt Deluth Pack makes a durable and very well constructed, but you can get other Deluth Packs that would be just as effective for half the price. Which personally I think is still way too much.
We're not all LL Bean wearin weekend warriors with more money than common sense. A canvas/leather bag 'should', by nature, be very durable.
Again, Deluth Pack makes a great product ... but they're overpriced to begin with. Then tack on the extra $200/per for this guys design ? I don't see it.
1) Where do you carry water bottles? Or do you ONLY use a bladder? I'm used to using a pack that has a slot on each side for water bottles
2) Is the waxed canvas option just for making the canvas water-resistant? Is that necessary in heavy rain on a long trek or is the unwaxed canvas water-resistant already?
3) Is the wax used on the waxed canvas petroleum-based? If so, could I simple get unwax and then put on a beeswax-based product for canvas?
Thanks to everyone for the comments and feedback. We are sure glad to have been able to work with Mike, he did a great job of designing it! Sure, the pack is steep in price, but most of our customers end up finding that they don't look at it the same way after they see how well it lasts decade after decade. Thanks again for your response!
That is a fine looking pack, but I have two comments:
1) With the goal in mind of keeping heavier items close to your spine and higher in the overall load, why put the axe low and furthest away? Makes more sense to lash it across the top or carry it on your belt.
2) $375? Christ Almighty! Handmade in the USA is great and all, but that's STEEP! (No offense :))
@Makermook ...It's expensive because it's a very high-quality product made right here in the good ol' USA. If you want to bitch and moan about the price, then go ahead and go to freakin' Wal-Mart and get yourself some cheap-ass, piece of shit pack made by slave labor in communist China!! Just remember to post back to us when the thing falls apart after maybe six months of regular use. That's why our economy is so messed up, people would rather go cheap and imported than go high quality and USA.
i have priced these before and the are way to expensive, especially for an alice pack rip off, i mean really take a look, it is almost the same design as an alice pack, you just lose the third outer pocket, and it is also really heavy.
ALICE packs use an external frame while the Bushcrafter is frameless. They do not have side compression straps, ax sleeve, or vertical pockets with interior sleeves designed for bushcraft tools. They are not handmade. Other than having pockets and being a backpack, I have no idea what you are referring to. The Bushcrafter is not for everyone to be sure and was meant for constant, hard use. For those who destroy a pack every year or so, the Bushcrafter will pay for itself in a short time. ML
i didnt mean to offend you, i understand that this is kinda personal to you, so will apologize for being so blunt. but that being said i can buy an alice pack and send it to a certain company and get it modified and still save $200. your pack is absolutely beautiful, and with a much more traditional look, and the quality and craftsmanship are top of the line, i didnt say it wasnt worth it, as beautiful as it is it i am certain it will be well worth it for lots of peolple.
No worries at all. You are not the first person who has mentioned the price, but I wanted this pack to be made in the USA, be made of the best materials, and have a lifetime guarantee which resulted in a comfortable and virtually indestructible pack but added considerably to the cost. It sounds like you have a good plan for something that will fit your needs which is what it's all about. Thanks for writing back and take good care. ML
Ok 375.00 um hell and no. I will stick with a Amry surplus that has a gun holder thanks tho. very nice would love to own but there is no way i would ever pay that much.
Mike loved the vid and the pack. I may have to re-think buying the Maxped Vulture. Btw, got my Falkniven dc4 from u and it is an amazing stone. Oh and the service was great to! Really looking foawrd to ur vid. When its ready please make an announcement here so we know. Thanks Mike
Great video as usual. However I'm not sold that style of pack. I'm more of an Osprey or Dueter kind of guy. I guess your's is a BC pack. Isn't it a little heavy? Or is weight not an issue in BC? You used to carry an UL pack of I remember correctly.
Hi and thanks for the kind words. Yes, I"ve used several ultralight frameless packs including the ones I sell on my website. They are good choices for trail hiking, but aren't made for rough off trail use, as a field pack, or to carry tools (at least not for very long). The Bushcrafter weighs 4.5 lbs which is great considering how heavy duty it is. Thx for watching, ML
it's weird that I can't find any backpacks of around this size with the same closing top, I've been looking around and have only found those huge, tall ones with nearly no outside pockets.
and not only of this quality, but even the book bags are disappearing.
Mike, you show the basic gear, Sleeping Pad, Bivi, Mosinet, cook kit and tools, with little clothes, but you don't show other gear like, first aid kit, fire starting kit, or water purification system. Is that all in the other front pouch? Could you do some videos on your smaller kits if you have them? I love your videos and will be ordering your Bushcraft knife soon. I like the way you approach BC and would love to see more details, such as wild edibles and meat gathering techniques.
Hi and thanks for the comments. I'm actually working on a full length DVD which is why I haven't posted a lot lately. It's quite an undertaking though! I'll keep everyone posted on the progress. You are correct in that most of the other items you mentioned are stored in the other vertical pocket, map pocket, and/or on my person.
I was always taught to put the heavier items on bottom? Can you tell me why you suggest to put the heavier items on top? Thank you so much for the great info and the pack
No offense intended, but you were taught wrong. It's tried and true my friend. I found a video on You Tube that actually explained the physics behind it. I learned from 22 years U. S. Army Infantry.
All of this over-priced, fashionable, store-bought stuff goes against the spirit of Bushcraft. It's a good design, and Deluth Pack makes a great product. American made and garaunteed for life... thumbs up.
Although ... at what essentially is a $400 price tag, there's no way. Thumbs down...
Deluth Pack makes a plethera of other bags, just as suitable, for half the price.
I get their catalog, and love what I've seen of their products.
One day I hope to be able to actually afford one of their bags...
Again, it's a good design, but not worth the extra $200 in my opinion.

good looking pack

Wouldn't it be better to have the heaviest items at your waist closest to your center of gravity? The hips also support weight better.

When the weight is higher in the pack it actually is transferd to the hips much better.

Mike,
Glad to see a new video. I been waiting for one since your new rucksack came out. It is outstanding! Hopefully I can get my hands on it someday. 5/5

it's weird that I can't find any backpacks of around this size with the same closing top, I've been looking around and have only found those huge, tall ones with nearly no outside pockets.
and not only of this quality, but even the book bags are disappearing.

Isn't this the same pack Dave canterbury did a review on?

Thanks again,
Mike

I would love to get the rucksack, but there's no way i will ever be able to afford it, as im only 15 and have no real income

"Ever"? I'm sure in a couple years you will have a job and a little money, and can spring for the pack.

Thank you so much for your response. Can you tell me what the name of the video is you found on youtube?
