Before any work commenced large barriers were put around the cemetery and the bodies were removed during the night and with permission from both the government and church.

The bodies were re-burried in a new cemetery.

So what happened here is beyond disgraceful.

I'm sure they also have contingencies in place for this. It happens all over the world. What we do is preservation. If the remains are not removed prior to development, then they would end up being destroyed by a very large digger to make way for new buildings. Fact is there just isn't enough space for everything. If you want to build and there are bodies, they must be removed or you can't build. Simple as. There is no prejudice in regard to what is being built or who is in the ground.

The osteologists (of which I am one) that remove and eventually rebury the bones take great care and the remains are always dealt with with proper respect. Seriously, read up on the laws surrounding all of this. Most graves like this are actually shafts with up to 10 people buried on top of eachother, most are unmarked. If families can be traced and contacted they are asked if they would like the remains for reburial or we do it
