My 2001 Jetta 2.0 started doing this about a month ago. I was dreading the diagnosis. Thanks very much for posting this video - new bearings are on the way & hopefully the old girl will be healed this weekend.
It cost me $60 for the hub, $30 for the wheel bearing kit with new axle nut and snap ring, and $30 to have the old bearing and hub pressed out and the new hub and bearing pressed in. All total about $120 parts and shop labor, plus my time. Economically much better than getting the dealer to do it to the tune of $700, and much more rewarding.
Just in case anyone was curious I drove with this noise for 40,000 miles before I did anything about it. I would reccomend taking care of it ASAP. When I pulled the spindle I was able to spin the hub by hand and hear the bearing whine. There was about 2mm of runout I could feel in my hand when I shook the hub.
