like you, i am fascinated with this building. it looks great with the glass and steel fronts - but we're all pretty sure nothing has been done to the interior of the building. its sad to think theat if they tried to run power and electricity in thae building that it would fail due to the weight of getting it in there. are there any known photos inside the hotel?
Apparently its not just a hotel anymore. It will include apartments and offices as well as a hotel. Or so they say. Some say only the top conical section and the lobby will be functioning only leaving the main floors unused.
I have one question, why did they stopped making this? Was it a cash crunch issue, yes it would have been really the tallest hotel in the world much earlier than burj al arab, and is it abandoned now? plz reply regards
- Hotels in North Korea are mostly without guests. They are meant to showcase how superior N. Korea and its system are. All of Pyongyang is just a showcase city.
- North Korea won't attack anyone, it's just blowing steam. The US (who have not had a year in the past 250 without attacking someone) accuse other countries of being warmongers, even though they haven't done anything, so they can attack the country 'pre-emptively'.
the question is Who want 2 stay at that Hotel??? bcuz north korea citizen is poor n plus don't hv enough money 2 support their own family.. I think the person that will stayed at there is Kim Jong Il n his family only n a few of their army(I guess)....
Too bad there will be virtually nop tourists to occupy the thing once it opens, what a waste of money and effort that could have otherwise been spent improving the dire food and health situation in that shithole excuse for a country!
I've been to Pyongyang film festival in 2008 and this building is something, you can't take your eyes off. It's absolutely hypnotizing. It's like a giant statue to DPRK.
I am surprised the Chinese haven't taken over the project to finish it. Tourism from China could very easily provide patrons for this hotel. Not interested I guess.
@IAmOpenMinded I don't think even very many Chinese want to go visit North Korea. What for? Besides, a lot of reputable architects and engineers say the hotel is unfixable anyway; that Egyptian company is likely just doing a little "window dressing" for Kim Jong-Il to make the hotel (falsely) look operational in exchange for those telecommunications rights that they want.
@danning1 I've seen those reports. But No-One has done a real examination of the Building other than the NK and Orascom so thier really just speculation. The fact that construction is continuing after the exterior was finished in july suggests that Orascom does intend to finish the building.
Attn: Before submitting a comment, please watch the entire video with annotations enabled and read the video description. 1) First and foremost, this is my original music video about a tall abandoned hotel that I previously did not know existed, and it freaked me out. 2) Yes, I know the hotel now has a mirror glass facade. However, the hotel was unfinished when the video was made in 2008. My description says it's completed. 3) Vulgar language guarantees your comment won't see the light of day.
@wendylouwho .... Thanks ... I appreciate the video ... I wish more people would monitor their videos to keep the trolls out ... I never see the purpose of throwing around insults and using cheap, low-class language.
The money, time, and effort lost by starting to build such a massive structure and not finishing it doesn't matter. North Korean leaders are not capitalists and i don't think they pay for labor or materials for building it. Money is almost non existent in the North, leaders simply command people what to do and people have no choice.
@ChrisMiller1994 Yeah, the news intro loop fit my title sequence well, as I was trying to make it look like real "news" :o) But the rest is an original composition I made with Reason 4. At the very end of the video, I show the actually rack of gear used in my song. The video's text description has more details.
So they could not make the hotel, at least finish it and use it for housing with some of the floors designated for space for schools or medical clinics for the citizens to benefit from.
their people are starving... they dont have money to fund such monstrosities when people dont have food to eat. When your people, not just some of them, but most of them are starving, you are scared to death. That is the most scary time for a dictator, because hungry people have little to lose, and will get angry and try to overthrow you, and will probably succeed. After all, what can a few elite members do against the whole country once they do not have enough food to even feed the military
They planned this to become the secret minestry of truth for controlling the whole world if they have invaded any country including China, Russia, USA, Europe.
The problem with North Korea is that it keeps building things unnecessarily. Luxury hotels for tourists who never come, marches and dances for people who will never watch them, boulevards which few cars will ever travel on...
The comments thus far are mostly political in nature, and that's to be expected I guess. But is no one just freaked out by this abandoned shell, like I was? That's what inspired me to make the music video in the first place! Since I first made this in 2008, construction resumed and the glass facade has finally been added. But it was the stunning revelation that the world's tallest hotel was an abandoned concrete shell that got me all bent out of shape in the first place!
@wendylouwho I find the story of this building to be fascinating. To build such an impressive building, at least from a distance, just to abandon it seems mind boggling to me. Have any idea what North Korea is trying to do with the Ryugyong. At this point the cost of repairing the structural deficiencies and completing the building would be prohibitive to say the least.
@ghostofjackie These provocations and agressions where then answered with a military strategy to liberate the whole country and form one government, and the troops from the north were inhailed in the South as liberators. But then the Americans went back in to restore the South puppet regime, and then attacked the North until the Chinese border and commited many atrocities. But with the help of the Chinese the North finally drew the Americans and South puppet regime back to the 38-parallel.
@ghostofjackie That is not the whole story. First please try to understand that the Korean peopled suffered from the Japanese oppression. Then the USA came in and split the country with the consent of the USSR, but without the consent of the Korean population. Then the US installed a puppet regime in the South, with many officials of the former repressing Japenese regime. The people were oppressed, and wanted to form a union with the North. Also the South had military invasions into the North.
North Korea's economy is in ruins. Fact, no country wants further negotiations with North Korea. North Korea is NOT a Communist or Socialist regime, its a TOTALITARIAN regime.
@ghostofjackie actually there are a lot of idiots in every country. Even the USA. Just look at the nutjob creationists there. Anyways this tower still epitomizes fail.

It's plain ugly, looks like a bat or vampire wanting to suck the blood out of you!!! It's Hideous. If it's so gorgeous why don't you move to NK and into that hotel, I am sure they will frind a room for you!!! LOL
Such a beautiful structure. You obviously have a bias against the wonderful country of North Korea. The USA attacked North Korea. I know this because I live in the United States. we nearly exterminated all indians and blacks and took all native american land and mexico land and gave bad deals to Russian and France and took their land also. Who is the aggressors here? Of course North Korea will view us badly since we attacked them!!!
@203207ab yeh but move on , stop living in the past - even today the biggeest investor in Vietnam a country that was at war with america , is USA.. Best of buddies today - well , almost.
First of all the unfortunate actions of the 1800's involving American natives has nothing to do with north korea. Second of all, yes, we were the aggressors. Doesn't excuse the North from being the most oppressive country in the world. The wonderful country of North Korea? Learn something

@SmoothCriminalAaron The North "invasion" was in fact a liberation of the South, where the masses were oppressed by a right-wing opressing puppet regime of the US. it was the South who attacked the North first, which lead to a military operation of the North. The North was inhailed by the people of the South as liberators, not as opressors or occupiers. Please learn your history!
@203207ab So just because you live in the USA you think you know everything. North Korea attack South korea first after words were exchanged between leaders and and we came to the rescue of SK because those communist North Koreans were trying to take the south over. Exterminated the blacks? hahahaha we brought them over here to work then freed them after the civil war i don't what you are talking about. The Russians and French want to sell us land they didn't need too. You are a dumbass.
@203207ab Also how is North korea a beautiful country everyone who doesn't live in the capital is starving to death they have to wear uniforms and forced to worship kim jong ill as a god. They have no phones, internet only people in the capital have TV's and there is only one station controlled by the government and only one radio station controlled by the government and everyone is poor. So basically 3 million who live in the capital live like shit and the other 21 million live really shitty.
@203207ab ... Eeerr no... North Korea attacked the South after gaining permission from Stalin (who was reluctant). The US was defending the South from Kim Il Sung's regime. This is well documented in Russian history as well.
@barbarash You have not told the other parts of the story, which is that the Korean people had suffered from the oppressing Japanese regime and wanted independence. But the USA (with consent of USSR) divided the country and installed a puppet regime with the same opressors, that terrorized the population. It was first the military provocation of the South, that was finally answered with a military exercise of the North to liberate the country.
@robheusd That is a fabrication. Soviet Archives have confirmed that Kim Il-Sung asked Stalin for permission to invade the South. Stalin eventually said yes.
Bad deals to Russia and France? no Alaska we bought, Russia didn't want it we bought Lousiana to help Napoleon"s war we tried to take land from the indians and yes killed most of them we didn't try to kill off blacks we segregated them because of racial tensions thats over When Mexico was an empire we had settled in Texas Mexico allowed whites to keep their land they broke that and read about the Alamo NK has Concentration camps for people who disrespect Kim we are a corrupt country also though.
@203207ab Then again, North Korea oppresses its people and if you i.e manages to flee the country then they will put your mother, father, brother and sister in Prison camps for 3 generations to come to root out the "Seed of evil". They also hold public executions commit crimes against the human rights on a daily basis. No matter what the Americans have or have not done, it cannot even compare to what North Korea is doing to its own people today. (Peace out from Sweden)
@203207ab so let me ask you something.....if the united states is so terrible....why the hell are you living here? Why don't you go life in North Korea? I'm sure they would be glad to take you in (and never let you out)
Learn to take criticism. After all you're the ones trying to control the world with your 1000s of nukes, subs, aircraft carriers and bitches like UK and Aus
@203207ab Russia sold alaska to the USA because they thought it was worthless. They never dreamed what riches in gold and oil it would produce in the future
First off this mamouth hotel is not at all attractive looking and what makes no sense to me is why anyone would invest in this property of 3,000 rooms when N.Korea only allows a select group of foreign visitors each year, who would be lucky to fill one floor.
I would consider this building much more impressive and beautiful (even considering the new glass facade) if I was able to stay there, walk freely without an escort and discuss anything I wanted to (including dissenting opinions against NK or what have you) without fear of being kicked out of the country or facing mental or physical compulsion to their cult personality towards the Dear and Great Leaders.
The whole thing is just creepy looking; looks like a portal to another dimension or something left behind by a long gone extraterrestrial civilization.
Imagine a NASA probe finding THAT on one of Jupiter's moons.
Smashing video, well done. Producer: don't worry, your fascination with the ghoulish furniture of this failed state is not construed as being anti-US. Far from it - people should see the failure of this horrific prison-camp of a country for what it really is.
Leave it to North Korea to build such a tall structure, without making sure the elevator would work properly. Are we really concerned about their nuke program, when they cannot complete a simple task?
Also, all 7 restaurants will be serving EMPTY PLATES!!!
Most revolutions were started by desperate people in desperate times. I'm very surprised this NK dictator has a hold on power for this long. I mean his people are very desperate are they not? They need to seriously think about ways to purge this "Dear Family" of dictators.
I think you have discovered the underlying problem with north Korea. The country does not exist to make the people's lives worthwhile but rather the only purpose of the country is to make Kim Jong Il have a nice life. Bush was right in calling him evil. I have come to the conclusion that the only way for Korea to be free of him is to have him killed. This is what both France and Russia learned in ridding themselves of leaders who were far less dangerous.
@epics7 Yes if you find the newer pics on the net with the blue glass fascade, it looks nice. These pics show it unfinished so it's just ugly, bare concrete.
@028956 hey, your little brother could be right....after all an elaborate underground bunker was hidden under a hotel in washington DC and no one knew it
The cat! Spooky! :o) Actually, I like the eerie music I made starting at about 1:50. That part really evokes how strange this building made me feel when I heard about it.
I have just visited NK. They have nearly covered one side with glass panels. The restaurant part on top has been covered with glass and steel. They hope parts of the hotel can be opened in 2012, the 100 years anniversary of Kim Il-Song's birth. The construction is done with funds from Egypt.
It's being suggested that the new glass facade is only to pretty it up... not sure they really are occupying it. Can anyone confirm if rooms are in fact being leased?
I dont know sorry but who really would want to stay in there, the building has been exposed to the elements and North Korea gets cold winters, humid summers, plenty of rain and wind. Personally if it did open as a hotel and I was in there I would be lying awake at night wondering if the building will collapse lol
it will be finishd in 2012. currently it is just under renovation. as far as i know it is not yet being used. i have never been there but i have researched some about the existence and engeneering of this building because it caught my interest.
It looms over Pyongyang as a massive embarrassment to North Korea. The damn thing was abandoned, like 17 years ago and they can't even tear it down? I heard a journalist say that whenever visitors ask a NK tour guide how to get there that the tour guide will pretend not to know (apparently because that's what they are ordered to do.) Kind of difficult hiding a 105-story structure, don't you think?
like you, i am fascinated with this building. it looks great with the glass and steel fronts - but we're all pretty sure nothing has been done to the interior of the building. its sad to think theat if they tried to run power and electricity in thae building that it would fail due to the weight of getting it in there. are there any known photos inside the hotel?

@203207ab what are you talking about!? bad deals! we didn't make those offers for the land that we purchased maybe you need to refresh your history.
TheDemocratssuckdick 1 year ago
@203207ab Then again, North Korea oppresses its people and if you i.e manages to flee the country then they will put your mother, father, brother and sister in Prison camps for 3 generations to come to root out the "Seed of evil". They also hold public executions commit crimes against the human rights on a daily basis. No matter what the Americans have or have not done, it cannot even compare to what North Korea is doing to its own people today. (Peace out from Sweden)
narutobeast90 1 year ago
@203207ab so let me ask you something.....if the united states is so terrible....why the hell are you living here? Why don't you go life in North Korea? I'm sure they would be glad to take you in (and never let you out)

First off this mamouth hotel is not at all attractive looking and what makes no sense to me is why anyone would invest in this property of 3,000 rooms when N.Korea only allows a select group of foreign visitors each year, who would be lucky to fill one floor.

waaaa so cool go into this building...but I think that I'll be killed by korean police!
Loritheviking 1 year ago
I would consider this building much more impressive and beautiful (even considering the new glass facade) if I was able to stay there, walk freely without an escort and discuss anything I wanted to (including dissenting opinions against NK or what have you) without fear of being kicked out of the country or facing mental or physical compulsion to their cult personality towards the Dear and Great Leaders.
HumanStrategy 1 year ago
I still don't get why they would make such a huge hotel - its not like North Korean is the latest hotspot or anything.
I read on wiki that because it was left abandoned for 16 years the building is declared unrepairable by the EU.

Can anyone confirm if rooms are in fact being leased?
wendylouwho 2 years ago
I dont know sorry but who really would want to stay in there, the building has been exposed to the elements and North Korea gets cold winters, humid summers, plenty of rain and wind. Personally if it did open as a hotel and I was in there I would be lying awake at night wondering if the building will collapse lol
ChrisGS1982 2 years ago
haha, same here

it will be finishd in 2012. currently it is just under renovation. as far as i know it is not yet being used. i have never been there but i have researched some about the existence and engeneering of this building because it caught my interest.

diddykongfu 2 years ago
It looms over Pyongyang as a massive embarrassment to North Korea. The damn thing was abandoned, like 17 years ago and they can't even tear it down? I heard a journalist say that whenever visitors ask a NK tour guide how to get there that the tour guide will pretend not to know (apparently because that's what they are ordered to do.) Kind of difficult hiding a 105-story structure, don't you think?
