I disagree with alot of this! being indy is the same as a major label, you have to use the same networks and promotional tools! at the end of the day its about who has more money but indy can give the Major's a run for the money! Lil Jon already proved that! Also the majors are using roadblocks on the indys with sites like TUNECORE that blocks the artist from reaching the true network resources that the majors use and when an indy label finds there way through they get a major disrto deal.

My reaction: I think that as soon as big labels stop implementing their own products, they stop being indie. Indie in my opinion refers to products that are not censored, changed by any thing/one else.

The makers of this should've interviewed an Indie Hip hop Artist/Act. No other music genre has such a vast difference in style, when it comes to it's Indie version, and it's mainstream version, than Hip hop. Definitely a movie I'd like to see. I've been trying to decide what exactly 'indie' is, as I've been part of the 'hipster', independent seattle scene for a while now. I like the guy in the middle, who says that indie is a state of mind. It doesn't always depend on the record label, it doesn't depend on the number of fans or the location. I think it's just a form of the alternative. People trying to express something through music, without looking to make it into a ringtone and be on MTV.

I've been trying to figure out what "indie" meant for years, a decade ago I thought it was a reference to some awesome music scene comin out of indiana. I ask people what KIND of music they like and they say 'indie' and it just leaves me puzzled, and some of my favorite bands are (apparantly) indie, but I don't describe them as such - they're just good.
What? You can be independent with any type of music, you don't have to play the same style and sound as indie bands these days to be independent. Pluse, it says its outside mainstream, but most of the most popular bands are indie.

you have to think every band/artist out there is ex-indie or still indie.
record labels don't pick up random guys off the street and say "Hey! I think you can be an awesome musician" so the person actually is.
getting good at music (either to get a label or just fans) happens by jam (bands) or practice (DJ -basicly jamming)
some indie bands do suck thats why they are and will stay indie but being indie is not a confirmation of sucking.=)

but they will turn it down
when bands sign with huge labels, they get basically all the work done for them (such as producing the cd, selling is, promoting, advertizing)
and worst of all they tell you what to write
the deeper meaning of music comes from the work you put into it to share it with the world. it doesnt have to be a struggle, but it takes work.

The makers of this should've interviewed an Indie Hip hop Artist/Act. No other music genre has such a vast difference in style, when it comes to it's Indie version, and it's mainstream version, than Hip hop. The mainstream Rappers have made the music a worldwide laughing stock, while Indie Rappers are the greatest lyricists in all of music.

Definitely a movie I'd like to see. I've been trying to decide what exactly 'indie' is, as I've been part of the 'hipster', independent seattle scene for a while now. I like the guy in the middle, who says that indie is a state of mind. It doesn't always depend on the record label, it doesn't depend on the number of fans or the location. I think it's just a form of the alternative. People trying to express something through music, without looking to make it into a ringtone and be on MTV.

I've been trying to figure out what "indie" meant for years, a decade ago I thought it was a reference to some awesome music scene comin out of indiana. I ask people what KIND of music they like and they say 'indie' and it just leaves me puzzled, and some of my favorite bands are (apparantly) indie, but I don't describe them as such - they're just good.

artistic freedom and can also do some solo projects like the last shadow puppets...just because they´ve got lots of fans doesn´t mean that they´re not indie... indie music is actually not snobbish underground shit to which only a small minority listens, but the music of young people all over europe, and that´s definitively applicable for the arctic monkeys!

the current indies are 17-26 -year-old lads from the UK and Scandinavia who just have a huge passion for music and do whatever they like. they produce the sound of european youth.

The US look at Indie. is what the title should be. And you know there are only few good Indie acts in the US.
Some lame people saying they don't do what the man tells them to do acting like such riots and keep repeating how different they are, come on you ought to be past that level when you past the age of 13!
Indie started as artists that just did what they like, low budget because they had a passion for it. In that culture a certain sound became what now is an icon for Indie music/films etc.
