All issues preceed from that. In the 1700s, agriculture was no more prominent in the south than the north. Only New York had the plantation system like the southern states. Take the slavery issue and the only difference was (according to written account from visitors) a lack of books in the south!

The people who bought brought & sold the slaves were from the union. Union General U.S. Grant said, "If I thought this war was to abolish slavery, I would resign my commission, and offer my sword to the other side." The reason the confederates left the union was for taxs. lincoln raised the taxes from 20% to 47% within a month of being president.

They were mostly skilled tradesmen who enjoyed considerable self-autonomy and quite often bought their freedom, a freedom that was recognized. Sure Northern state did bad shit, but the Abolitionist supported and fought the war for their own reasons.
