I shall respond to your overzealous love of the word, "standby" by pasting a CC from a message I sent to IIandrokII to which he has neglected to reply.
I assure you it wasn't on standby, and the connection was active and unobstructed, but it's a good theory.
The download indicator is only active when there is incoming activity that is being managed on the server. My download indicator is usually inactive because there is nobody else in my party and there are no enemies doing anything.
Though the shagreeces ARE moving as I push them around, their new positions are not shown as download activity because motion of objects due to pushing is never managed by the server. That also means that when you push a shagreece (or anything at all) your other party members will not see it being pushed. Its displaced position after having been pushed is unique to the client (your own console) and is not updated to the clients of other party members,
nor is it confirmed by the server and sent back to your own client. That's why you rarely see the download indicator. And when you push something, Your other party members will only see you clip through the object. Please note also that the download indicator is occasionally active (keep watching it), not sure why though (the server must have had something important to update to my client), but regardless, that would be impossible on standby.
And on a more powerful note, the upload indicator is on for the entire duration of the film except for one second at the end. How would THAT happen on standby?
Try it yourself. Put your modem on standby and watch what happens. You'll see that the enemies will still follow the normal AI script. They will still run around and try to kill you. The only difference is that if you are playing online, you will not take any damage, nor can you deal any damage to the enemy.
That's because while physical displacements, attacks, motions, animations, damage, heals, status change, HP, PP, chat, etc., are all updated over the server, AI itself is managed by the client. Which begs the question, who's client is managing the AI in a multi player mission? I have no idea. If you know, please tell me.
But I'm sure that has something to do with the fact that enemy positions are not always synchronized among the party, and the occasional, mysterious, sudden, drastic displacements of all enemies simultaneously that I always witness. Sometimes I'll see an enemy taking damage from out of nowhere, but then I see my party mate hacking and slashing at NOTHING...way off in the corner. The enemy is probably over there in the corner as he sees it on HIS xbox.
The server did not synchronize the enemy positions. But I digress. Umm what else? Oh, Spawning is also managed by the server. So on standby, the shagreeces wouldn't even be able to spawn in the first place.
