This has just made me want to listen through Skeletal Lamping a few times over. Of Montreal just never get old - you hear something new every time you blaze through an album!
wow! dave is clearly unimpressed, even before they start! he is definitely old school-i think the whole thing went over his head. one of the best band performances i've seen on a show like this tho; usually they totally suck, even if it's a good band
Well ya'll are lame and i'd kill myself before watching a of Montreal concert live in the midwest. The crowd just standing there. 3 people dancing. Besides is too good for ya'll. Michigan. serious?

@futurebutterfly444 I agree that Cherry Peel is something very special, but Skeletal Lamping was crafted very well. It is very nice and has a nice groove. But I'm a False Priest fan, that album just blew my mind.
the gay parade is probably the best album of the last 10 years, the kind of bands of Montreal is compared to shows the current awful state of the music industry
Is the entire band gay or are they just gay by association from Kevin Barnes? According to Wikipedia, Kevin Barnes went to Jupiter High School, the school I graduated from.

Haha.
David Letterman at the end: "OoooK"
Wonderful song, wonderful band... For me, much of the rest of the album is kind of disappointing. It's too disjointed and I don't really enjoy the REALLY weird and/or explicit sexual themes.
Why do people think having a spouse somehow seals the question of their sexuality? I'm not saying Kevin is gay, in fact I could not care less about his sexual orientation, but Elton John was married to a woman once too. Married to a woman does not equal a straight man. Plenty of closeted gay men marry women. (again, disclaimer, I am no way saying anything about Kevin's sexuality. I'm just saying, in general.)
"The Past is a Grotesque Animal" from Hissing Fauna is one of the best tracks I have ever heard. I just discovered this band a few weeks ago, and holy sh*t they are amazing! To the haters and bigots - this shit ain't gay. He might be (his lyrics make me think he's likely bi), but who gives a rat's ass? Let the music influence your opinions on what you are hearing, not some irrelevant bullshit like being gay or flamboyant. Doesn't Anyone remember New York Dolls? Bowie? Queen? Awesome stuff.
I don't think he's gay, and neither is Bowie, I think it's just his character. But yeah, his lyrics are a bit too explicit. "We can do it softcore, but you should know I take it both ways" had me LMAO the first time I heard it.
I wasn't referring to Bowie as being "gay", I was really just referencing bands/artists that were/are known to be flamboyant and sometimes sexually ambiguous. As far as I know, Freddie Mercury was the only gay person in any of the bands I referenced. The line you quoted "...take it both ways" cracked me up, too. Kevin Barnes is a true talent.
Kevin Barnes once said, ""The character's name is Georgie Fruit, and he's in his late forties, a black man who has been through multiple sex changes. He's been a man and a woman, and then back to a man. He's been to prison a couple of times. In the 70s he was in a band called Arousal, a funk rock band sort of like the Ohio Players. Then he went through a few different phases." Georgie Fruit is featured prominently in the album skeletal lamping. Therefore he is clearly not gay, it is a character
His feminen stage prescense is a glam alter-ego, known as Georgie Fruit. Kind of hilarious, I love seeing the backstage videos of him in his character, "I just hate anything masculine, it's just disgusting." LOL.
Just to clarify for you, Kevin Barnes is not gay. In fact he is/was married, I can't remember the story for sure, although I believe he still is married. All homosexual lyrics/dress apparel is in his glam rock alter-ego known as "Georgie Fruit" look it up for more information on Georgie's bio. Which makes it all the more beautiful. If you like this stuff, check out the acoustic videos, different but just as good if not better.
Thanks for your message. When I originally posted my thoughts, I had only known about Kevin Barnes / Of Montreal for a few weeks. Since then, I have researched this band exhaustively. They are one of the best bands of all-time, in my opinion. I also found out that he "tried" to be gay, but it just didn't work for him. I'm not sure how anyone can "try" to be gay - you either are or you aren't. His sexual ambiguity is a big part of his appeal for me. Of Montreal are an important band.
Yes, they are excellent. I haven't heard anything else quite like them. Again I would highly reccomend listening to all of their acoustic songs. As well as, Skeletal Lamping, Hissing Fauna are You the Destroyer?, some of Satanic Panic in the Attic, and some of Sunlandic Twins, also their Icons Abstact these Ep is excellent.
Yes it is, lol. Read up on it, I believe he clarified that in an interview. He may be weird a lot of the time, but that is his stage presence where he appears gay.
"I don't want people to think I'm divorcing myself from reality. He gives a voice to something I feel too vulnerable to say as just Kevin Barnes. But then I realize it is just Kevin Barnes. There is no Georgie Fruit."
Exactly, it is an alter-ego not really him. Kevin mimics Bowie's alter ego as "Ziggy Stardust" Although he says there is no Georgie Fruit, I believe he is saying that he realizes he is not real. However, when he is "Georgie Fruit" he feels like he can express himself in a different way. Like an actor getting into character.
what does kevin barnes say after letterman says "boy u should have seen what was going on back there." ? is it "i'll find out" i cant really understand him.
I think Letterman's awkwardness with his musical guests stems more from his own insecurity. He's definitely hip in his own way, but I think he feels out of his element with rock bands whose members are 20 or 30 years younger than he is. He had a similar reaction to TVotR's "Wolf Like Me," and that was one of the best live performances I've ever seen.
Kevin Barnes did a great list of songs to download as part of Blender mag's "1001 Downloads." You should check it out.
I find Letterman's "ooookay..." after the end of the song quite interesting. I get the vibe that he really didn't get the performance. I think that they should have just played the song and left out all the theatrics. To all of us hardcore of Montreal fans, we understand that something like this is not unusual for Kevin Barnes, but mainstream America knows little about this band and this audience probably didn't understand the performance at all.
The skeletal lamping show I saw was the best performance ive ever seen, period. I can imagine that if they had played something like St. Exquisite's Confessions with their normal flamboyancy it would have led to them getting cut midsong and multiple lawsuits for CBS, lol.
I don' thtink there's any way Dottie could be any cuter...she just looks so happy playing her keyboard! I think this is a marvelous performance, I like Kevin's makeup too :D
I know. I discovered them on 'Conan' and was about to change it (I.e. yet another band on Conan I never heard of...) and gave it a chance and it was "Heimdale's Gate Like a Promethian Curse" and it changed my life. this song / performance just doesn't do it for me.. i saw it live and it was a lot better.. this seems so..lazy and lame. i donno, kevin is usually so much better and i think he should have chosen a different song to be live on letterman because this isn't the true kevin barnes
I believe I said, "i think he should have chosen..."
Why are you trying to start a fight? That's so immature, all I was doing was responding to a video and saying what I thought. If I wasn't supposed to do that, there'd be no comment option.
they weren't terrible, but ive been listening to them for years, been to a bunch of concerts, and i have even met kevin. i just think he doesn't try as has as he did in the past.
I agree. I haven't invested much time listening to the current album, but Hissing Fauna is still in rotation. All this said, that was a good perfromance, and I will check it out some more.
thank you for posting this. letterman looked CONFUSED. I'm really sad kevin didn't even get to say anything at all. really very sad. And he was so toned down in his dress and actions too, they could have at least asked him a little something, or acted like anyone cares about music at all. rock is dead.
I know idolizing people or holding them on a pedestal is off the mark on what the human collective is all about but a person like Kevin should definitely be a major voice in times like these. He's growing as a musician and a human being every album. Society's just not "weird" enough for me....not yet.
ugh...what? they're just talking about what's up; nobody said they were basing their own oppinions on what a critic thinks. why are you preaching? - what is wrong with you?
Rolling Stone must be the only publication that liked Skeletal Lamping, every other respected music journalist magazine slammed it. Personally I like it just as much as Hissing Fauna, which I thought got a little too much love.
so.. i was waiting to watch this on letterman.,, sat through him fawning over will smith.. waiting for kevin and co to play... when the digital signal on my tv goes out. I cried in agony as I had endured most of this show just to catch a glimpse of the tour i missed,, and the digital signal crapped out. thank the creator(of youtube) for youtube ...
I had the same issue. I watched the show and then my power went out for about 10 minutes. Then when it came back on, Will Smith's face was frozen on screen. I searched the internet for a feed to no avail. I'm glad someone put this up on youtube.

Kevin is really channeling Prince lately, even in clothing. :)
Icelandsnow 3 years ago
in 2007 they even played covers by prince. it was great
ProbablyZack 3 years ago
I KNOW! Isn't it great. I heard some bootlegs.

this song / performance just doesn't do it for me.. i saw it live and it was a lot better.. this seems so..lazy and lame. i donno, kevin is usually so much better and i think he should have chosen a different song to be live on letterman because this isn't the true kevin barnes
hayls22 3 years ago
Well Kevin Barnes chose this song, so I don't understand why you, some insignificant fan thinks he can say what is and what isn't "Kevin Barnes".
cc3814 3 years ago
Just stating my opinion
hayls22 3 years ago
You didn't say "I think" or "I believe" or "In my opinion" therefore you were saying something as a fact.
cc3814 3 years ago
Really?
I believe I said, "i think he should have chosen..."
Why are you trying to start a fight? That's so immature, all I was doing was responding to a video and saying what I thought. If I wasn't supposed to do that, there'd be no comment option.

kevin doesnt try anymore

I saw them in concert a couple of weeks ago and he was fantastic.
thealgaehunter 3 years ago 2
they weren't terrible, but ive been listening to them for years, been to a bunch of concerts, and i have even met kevin. i just think he doesn't try as has as he did in the past.
kdwyer2 3 years ago
Maybe he's trying hard in other aspects of the band but not so much in the music. I think Hissing Fauna was grade A though. What do you think?
Icelandsnow 2 years ago
I agree. I haven't invested much time listening to the current album, but Hissing Fauna is still in rotation. All this said, that was a good perfromance, and I will check it out some more.
D6monsa6diaMon6s 2 years ago 2
Me too! I look at this and it does not compare. Kevin was a lot more wild live :P
ixdani 3 years ago
I think he's just reserved here because although, I love Kevin's eccentrics, the national population would think this is rather peculiar.
centerfugee 3 years ago
Yeah I think that Letterman's response describes the usual national response,"oooooook how bout that"
evcon131 3 years ago
i wouldn't judge based on a TV performance
HopePoisoned 2 years ago 2
I think the singers voice sounds a little bit like the d00d from The Violent Femmes.
anyone hear it, or have I simply gone mad?!

"ladies and gentlemen this evening's performance is brought to you by boy george and acid!"

I don't like their recorded sound.
But I love the sound of their live performance.

i....love....them

Sound is kinda crappy.
Performance overall wasn't amazing but it's for TV, not their own concert.

yeah a lot of bands that put on great shows sound like ass-clowns on TV shows

of Montreal is one of the most innovative, creative, and fun bands in pop music today! I hope good things are in store for all of us in 2009! :-)

well like the beverage, it goes flat eventually and it rots your teeth...don't hold out too much hope!
nataku012 3 years ago
Well, I was hoping that all of us have good things in store in 2009, not just of Montreal!XOXOXOXOX

thank you for posting this. letterman looked CONFUSED. I'm really sad kevin didn't even get to say anything at all. really very sad. And he was so toned down in his dress and actions too, they could have at least asked him a little something, or acted like anyone cares about music at all. rock is dead.
HeWasAKid 3 years ago
I know idolizing people or holding them on a pedestal is off the mark on what the human collective is all about but a person like Kevin should definitely be a major voice in times like these. He's growing as a musician and a human being every album. Society's just not "weird" enough for me....not yet.

Best thing I've seen on Letterman in quite a while.
TheBoss2332 3 years ago 6
Why do you care what certain publishers review? Its up to you to decide if you like it or not. Never trust what a magazine tells you about a band.
acogswell 3 years ago 4
ugh...what? they're just talking about what's up; nobody said they were basing their own oppinions on what a critic thinks. why are you preaching? - what is wrong with you?
HopePoisoned 2 years ago
Rolling Stone also liked the album that the Jonas Brothers put out. Just saying...
Also, did anyone noticed how un-enthused David Letterman looked when he introduced them?
AllahisaJew 3 years ago
he never looks enthused
ShemmJacc 3 years ago
Rolling Stone must be the only publication that liked Skeletal Lamping, every other respected music journalist magazine slammed it. Personally I like it just as much as Hissing Fauna, which I thought got a little too much love.
Crede06 3 years ago
Letterman's too old. He just doesn't get the magic. ah well. of Montreal kicks ass! They're the only reason I watched last night.

so.. i was waiting to watch this on letterman.,, sat through him fawning over will smith.. waiting for kevin and co to play... when the digital signal on my tv goes out. I cried in agony as I had endured most of this show just to catch a glimpse of the tour i missed,, and the digital signal crapped out. thank the creator(of youtube) for youtube ...
humanstruggle 3 years ago
I had the same issue. I watched the show and then my power went out for about 10 minutes. Then when it came back on, Will Smith's face was frozen on screen. I searched the internet for a feed to no avail. I'm glad someone put this up on youtube.
