  • Also I use an aqueous style parts cleaner for cleaning rotors. Never pry on the pad use a c-clamp to compress the piston.

  • Dam, how can a shop have clean ass floors??

  • nice tutorial you have here. i don't have the bearing cap cleaner or clean garage, but i made a video on my bearing project and posted it here as a video response. eric.

  • Every manufacturer's instruction I have ever seen says "Do not hang the caliber on the flexible brake hose"! I think you shoukd have stressed how important it is to follow manufactures instruction for preloading the bearings!

  • I did my nissan frontier the directions said tighten down 60 foot pounds then back it off to zero on torque wrench. Makes no sense to me

  • Not sure where you got that information from? Need more info (year, model, etc.).

  • @superhawkn The torque spec first seats the rollers in the bearings, then backing it off sets the radial and axial clearances. There should be 0.001"-0.005" end play when you are finished.

  • @superhawkn It's to set the bearings, it's normal.

  • And don't forget to pump the brake pedal!

  • I have a 98 dodge RAM 1500/ I replaced everything in front suspension, I took it to get aligned but after it started creaking as i got home it started found a thunk thunk noise.

  • It sounds like there is something loose; I would go back and check your front suspension for loose and or missing bolts. Good luck!

  • If I buy new rotors/ do I grease the races with the bearings, or just grease the bearings ?

  • You can put grease on the races, just make sure you grease the bearings.

  • Thanks guy for the vid. Hey me wheel does a clucking noise everytime its spins, but i have it on a jack spin it no noise

  • What type of car do you have? If you have a front wheel drive vehicle you might have a bad CV joint (axle).

  • Would it be the similar process for a 1984 oldsmobile cutlass ?

Doing front brakes soon ,might aswell put in new ones right

  • This process would be similar for your 84 Cutlass.

  • Great video, nice and easy with clear explanations. I have to replace my rotors bearings and brake pads on my 1500 Chevy van.. This "How to" video was a good refresher. Thanks

  • what do you do if the outer bearing gets stuck on the spindle? how can you remove it?

  • If the outer bearing gets stuck you can try taping the brake rotor with a rubber mallet.

  • @canobd2 i have and it wont budge. they dont have a puller big enough to fit and an adapter for aa slide hammer either. i cant chisel it or grind it kust theirs not anough room either.

  • @187lazyjoker I had the same problem like you..Removed mine with an electric grinder. Worked really well, it was off in 5 minutes. But if you gonna do that, make sure you dont over grind and damage the spindle.

  • @DJEDzTV thakns what size grinder did you use? because the stuck bearing are on my chevy caprice and my grinder wont even touch the bearing because its in thier pretty deep.. (thats what she said) lol

  • @187lazyjoker haha )) Well i bough a smallest grinder for around 20 pounds, with a small grinding disc..I had to cut a bit sideways, otherwise i'd damage something. I made 2 cuts from different sides, that made it a bit loose..so I pulled it off :) Just try not to cut ur spindle.

  • by the way two bearings (one for each side) should come ?

  • Yes, one bearing per side.

  • perfect video, i have the same truck now i know what u need

  • How long do you think it should take to replace a single rear hub on a 2003 Saturn Vue? Nice video! If I had all the supplies and more than a curb as a garage, I'd try it myself!

  • To replace a rear hub on your 2003 Vue it should take a just under 1 hour.

  • @canobd2 so it seems it's much easier to do since it's a hub assembly. What tools would I need should I try it myself? Thanks!

  • You’re going to need a socket set and a torque wrench. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the video. Now I understand why bearing replacement would cost a customer at around $400 (just for the fronts) at a shop.

  • @strumpeteer it only cost like 40 a side to do it your self

  • thank you! i am going to do this on my skyline. just really needed to see the inner bearing seal removal. has given me the confidence i need. thanks!

  • All in all, very nicely done, BUT you glossed over the most critical part of the job: wheel bearing adjustment. It is unclear just how tightly you're preloading the bearing and how far you're backing off for the final setting. Mercedes, for example, says to use a dial caliper to adjust end play. How is that done? Old school mechanics say that's overkill, and it may well be, but people who don't do this every day need a little more concrete information to go on please. Thank you.

  • There are a lot off different combinations out there and we can't cover them all unfortunately. This video was made to give you a general idea as to what to expect. I would recommend that everyone get a service manual for the vehicle they are working on.

  • how much u charge to do this on both side of a 95 nissan altima?

  • The labor to do this on your 95 Altima would be about 3hours.

  • Very interesting video, thank you. I think it's just beyond my ability, but at least I know what the mechanic is doing.

  • I'm just a little confused, I'm replacing a wheel bearing on a 93 Geo Prizm. I just purchased the bearing and it's all one piece, does this mean that I have to take the race off of it and then install it? And do I have to purchase the seal separately?

  • @shitwaffle1 Your username gives me pause, but I will go off the thought that you are not a troll.

You have a front wheel drive car, it uses an entire hub assembly, do not take that apart, just remove the old hub assembly, replace with the new one and make sure to hook everything back up.

  • The bearing for your 1993 Prizm is a one piece sealed bearing that’s why it looks different, do not take it apart it needs to be installed in one piece. If the bearing did not come with a seal then you should get it separately.

  • i have a 1978 el camino . if i want to repack the wheel bearings do i need to buy a new seal ?? and is it a big job on an el camino ??

  • I would defiantly replace the seals if you’re going to repack the bearings. As far as it being a big deal that’s a matter of opinion. Good Luck!

  • good video

  • lol wow........talk about a thorough vehicle description in that intro lol

  • My disks have a little rust on them how do I remove the rust, you recommend a special solvent?

  • A little rust on your rotors is not that big of a deal, it usually goes away after the first few stops after driving.

  • Do you think this is something someone without experience could do on their own vehicle after watching the video as long as they have the right tools? I am usually pretty quick to pick things up and am a visual and hands on learner...I havent done many car repairs but am great at repairing and building things in general, so Id figure if I watched the video enough and read up on it and what I need I should be able to do it...

  • I can't answer that question. If you feel comfortable about it then I say do it, only you know what you’re capable of. Good Luck!!

  • an easy way to tell a good mechanic from a bad one is that the good old school mechanics never uses gloves, next time u go to a shop just pay attention :D

  • car rumbles when i drive it....is it the wheel bearings gone bad or what? plz help

  • I'm not sure what you mean by rumble? However if your noise is changing with speeds, while turning, and you hear more of a moaning, groaning, wining sound then you may have a bad wheel bearing.

  • wow a real mechanic that dont use gloves!

  • Thank you sir. I can't do this myself anymore, but I need the service done. Good to know what the mechanic is doing in the garage while I'm waiting in the lounge. ;0)

  • for me its 20 min

  • Guy went to the Bob Ross school of soft speaking

  • What's the average time to do this job?

  • The average time would be about 1 1/2 hours.

  • This is an excellent video but one question I have to ask you. The race normally come with thin edge on one side and a thick edge on the other. Which side goes inwards the thick or the thin?

  • Typically the thicker edge is on the inside; however you should follow the manufactures directions.

  • @mi69ch12ma6 Thank you so much for your response. It does not mention anything in the manaul at all. But when I took the old races off, I saw that the thick edges were facing inside. I just wanted to confirm it with you since I am having 83 Cutlass and I was afraid that the previous owner did not install it correctly. Thank you again for your response.

  • A channel locks to tighten? please no

  • Great video, thanks!

  • are 2 wheel drive wheel bearings different than a 4 wheel drive wheel bearings? with a 4 wheel drive do you have to replace the whole hub or is that when you have abs brakes?

  • In most cases a four wheel drive bearing is different than a two wheel drive bearing. As far as having to replace the hub, it all depends on the vehicle (some you do and some you don't)

  • @canobd2 ok in other videos i was watching on changing wheel bearing on chevy 4x4s it showed them changing what i think is the hub (one end has the studs in the middle is the bearings and on the other end is where it bolts on? is what i described the hub? on a 4x4 can u just replace the bearing or are they all different some the hub and others the bearings?

  • What is the vehicle that you are working on year, model, and engine? This way I can get you the exact answer your looking for (most 4wd Chevy’s have the hub and bearing as one piece). Thanks!

  • @canobd2 im not replacing it on any vehicles, but i appreciate your offer, i am just trying to learn more about cars because something that i like to do is work on cars and try to learn more. Thanks though.

  • I have a 98 nissan sentra with bad inner wheel bearing, is it done same way? or do I have to take out the whole wheel assembly? I havent heard anything about the race either. Also is it necessary that I get my seal new too with the bearing?

    Thanks

  • Replacing the wheel bearing is a little different on your car. I would get a service manual if you do not have one, you will also need a press to perform this job. As far as a seal, your bearing is sealed so it does not require a seal. Good Luck!

  • Hi, i recently replace my rotors and wheel bearings on a 99 f150 4x2 4.6

I do recall have the races included in package but did not install to the rotors.

i looked up online how to change them and there was never a mention of race on 99 f150

So my question is did i do it wrong?

  • For your f150 the races should be built into the rotor, so they are not removable.

  • You don't want to hang your caliper like that. It can easily snap a brake line and you have a whole new set of problems. Tie it with bailing wire or a cable tie to a control arm, or at very least set it on top of one.

  • do the long chevy express van has race inside the rotor?

  • The wheel bearing is part of the wheel hub, on the back side of the rotor.

  • thanks for your comment

  • do you have to remove the old wheel bearing race or can you just leave them in?

  • You need to remove the old race before installing the new bearing.
