I had these for about a year and a half now, they're good sounding headphones for price, but definitely not neutral sounding. They color the sound somewhat, have slightly uncontrolled bass when used without an amp or with a bad amp, mids are very forward and highs are recessed. If you want neutral headphones for 200-250 dollars you're much better off with AKG K601. Also, they're definitely not high end. Compared to my HD650's and AKG Q701's they sound...to put it nicely...muffled, unclear.
I just bought these for $199. Absolute cheapest price I could find anywhere. Futureshop (assholes) want to charge $250+tax for these! Always shop around because Futureshit and Breast Buy will always try to scam your wallet...
Anyway, I have been using Sennheiser products for years and these headphones do not disappoint. They look great, feel great and sound great. They're not cheap but this is a case where you get what you pay for :) I also have the $100 Klipsch S4 earbuds - awesome! :)
cool man, good deal! :) Our headphones are freakin AWESOME! I'm using mine with X-Fi and my BF3 score actually went up since I started using them :):) Sounds *amazing*
I just bought these after reading the reviews from experts and all....this is my first time with Sennheiser and i gotta admit they are absolutely fantastic. Superb sound and amazing reproduction with a massive sound-stage!! Awesome!!! Besides this I have Klipsch Image s1,Sony XB500 and Beats. But nothing matches sennheiser....I suddenly feel like i have grown up :P
@recrobeer Hope you have an amp, because these DO need an amp to sound their best. They also need a great source and proper music files, otherwise its a waste of money.
@derbigpr500 I do feel a loss of power when I use it with my Iphone. But i think these sound awesome when I use it with my laptop...do you think they will perform even better with an AMP still? Is fiio e7 a good amp? Also what d u think of Beyerdynamic DT 880?? Thanks!
@recrobeer If you think they sound awesome straight out of laptop, then you have no idea how much you're missing. They need an amp, yes, because they're not really 50 Ohm impedance, they're actually 300 Ohm in the bass-low mids area. Also, its about quality of source. You need high quality music files, good sound card or DAC, and then a good amp. Your headphones will only sound as good as the worst piece of your system.
@recrobeer Yes, E7 is a decent DAC, but not a really good amp. Its meant to be used with E9, and if you have E7 + E9, then you can basically pull everything out of the HD558 and make them sound close to as good as they can possibly sound. About Beyerdynamic DT880...they're great headphones, in different league compared to 558, but they already need a seriously good amp to sound good, and they are totally different than 558's. They're very analytical and bright sounding, not so fun.
@recrobeer No problems, you'll hear a big improvement with a proper DAC and amp. Its what matter most. You can have the best headphones in the world, if you have a bad source, they'll sound bad.
@ItsDeadlySP They are a neutral, accurate sounding headphone, so whatever the source outputs it reproduces almost exactly the same. So they are great for sound monitors :)
@Nfioresi They both have their strengths & weaknesses. 558's are open so sound is more laid back and neautral, and they have a better soundstage. M50s are closed so bigger bass on them, though the 558s aren't bad at bass either. Ive found my 558's very comfortable with their velour earcups and its open design lets ears breathe, but the m50's closed design isolates sound better. Just assess your needs on a headphone and make your pic, they are both great.
@PureSolidness Well, I just ordered these today. I'm a music lover and a self-taught musican who loves fiddling around and messing with my keyboard. I've never spent more than 10 bucks for a pair of earphones. I hope these are worth the price I spent for them new. =/
They're on Sale at Future Shop too for the same price as Amazon.ca - sale ends on January 26, 2012. Just ordered mine today! Good to hear that you can order different length cords
Depends. IF you're a Bass-All-The-Way-And-Nothing-Else-Matters guy, then get the Beats. But otherwise for all purpose and intent, get the Sennheisers. =/
@WatariWammy Dude, you need to so get this!! These headphones came in for me today. Been just sitting here drooling over how good these headphones are. These are a must get over beats! Good luck bro.
@AnimeSage285 That sounds awesome bro! I was going to go down to my local Best buy and test them out and see If i should get the HD598s since I have l little extra cash from christmas.
But i saw you wanted to get the 598. I tried that and the 558.
Only get the 598 if you're a classical/instrumental fan or if you value clarity/exact reproduction of sound and a big soundstage. This is because they are more of a cheaper HD650.
I prefer the 558 for it's tighter, bigger bass. Plus i like a little colouration. And it's friendly to a bigger set of genres.
does the HD558 bleed sound? I am looking for a headphone that doesnt leak sound as I live in a shared room and want to listen to music or game without disturbing others. Can someone fill me in? Thanks.
@MHAZIQ11 I could give you a long winded description of what I think about the bass on these, but for a shortened version, I answer this in the review you just commented on.
@DoflaMihawk He said they were good for pop, trance, hip-hop, classical and heavy music, and that he improved on Black Ops when he used them. Listen more
if anyone hasn't figured it out yet its that you can easily turn the bass up on an equalizer that comes with almost any type of technical used for sound like a mixer, program or mp3 player...
@PureTranceMedia thanks,i got these and love them like crazy. To anyone out there who is on the edge about getting these,i guarantee you will love them.ive had them for 15 days now.out of the box they wont sound right, but after a few hours for burn-in they start to sound great already!!!!!! buy them!!!!!
@1506jet I ordered them last night. Amazon.ca is having a half off sale on them for Canadians only. I am trembling with anticipation. Food doesn't even taste good right now.
@AnimeSage285@MrColemanSlawsky 99.9% chance you guys wont be disappointed in them :) As an FYI and Im sure you know from watching the review, they are a neutral sounding headphone so what your source is outputting is exactly what they are bringing to your ears.
@SuperWeng10@SuperWeng10 Thanks man! As for burn-in periods It ranges widely among audio enthusiasts any where from as little as 10hrs on a slightly higher-than-nomal listening volume to 30or40ours gradually increasing the volume. Even others don't believe in burn-in at all *shrugs*
@systemicwinner Yep, definitely the open design of the 558's provide them with one of the best and largest soundstages possible, even better than other open-type sets :) And ya pretty much any Beats product is frowned upon by almost all audiophiles for their sub-par sound clarity, less than stellar frequency response and their inflated prices :S
@luis61961944 If you go to any audiophile forum, 99.9% of them will say to stay away from anything by Beats (inferior sound clarity, sub-par frequency response, heavily overpriced etc). I agree with them. HD558's are much better than Solo's in every way except isolation, but that's because they were meant to be open type for greater soundstage.
@luis61961944 yes these are good for Ipod, Iphone and Ipad. I have the 558's bigger brother the 598's and they are very similar to the 558's and they sound great on an Ipod and with my Cowon Iaudio9, to get the best experience out of them use a portable amp like the Fiio E6, Fiio E11 or jdslabs cmoy. But I repeat the 558's will sound great when plugged directly into an Ipod.
@0HelixNL0 Haha nice, I was just telling another commenter I use them for movies now as well and they're actually better than 5.1 my speaker set, I find. And YES definitely worth the money unlike some other brands... *cough* Beats *cough*
@CheesecakeDamnation iPods tend to struggle in comparison with other mp3 players when it comes to powering higher impedance headphones, but luckily the 558's are only 50ohms, so even ipods should be able to drive them fine :)
I just got these. My first impression is that they are the BEST sound quality that I have ever heard in a pair of headphones. The bass is strong, but not huge. It is very balanced with the mids and highs (which are CRYSTAL clear). Do keep in mind that they are an open back design and people in the same room WILL hear what you are listening to. They are definitely designed for private listening, and they are perfect for that.
@windows7BMR I don't use a headphone amp (my xFi Titanium desktop soundcard powers them fine) but using an amp definitely will help, just not as much as higher ohm (300+) headphones :)
Right now future shop has a sale for them until December 24th for $50 off. Now $199.99. I'm going to order them online because this is a deal that I don't want to miss. I've done my research and have finally decided on these. Your video helped me a lot!
@Lovishtanu thanks i will just get the senns cus you can try the bose ones at future shop and i think they sound nice, but i have nothing to compare them to because these will be my first higher end headphone to be boought.if people say that the monster beats by dr.dre are bad...and i thought they were good.i think these will astonish me. thanks
@1506jet@Lovishtanu Thanks for the props Jet, I'm glad this vid helped. And yes I agree with lovish, just try them both :) I think you will very impressed with the 558's if you havent tried them out yet :D
Should I buy these or the Bose ae2i. I live in Canada and was trying to buy them on kijiji, but I don't know which future shops have them! Great videos btw
@1506jet I cannot say about the Bose ae2i but I have been using HD558 for 3 months now. So I can vouch for their quality. It's absolutely amazing. The best way would be to try them both for future shop (you can order online) and keep the one that you like and return the other one. You can also try Klipsh Imageone or AKG.
@PureTranceMedia Hah, sweet dude! congratz :D ooh, I got the 558s as a xmas gift. I've been using 'em every day since christmas, and I'll have to say that they are really nice :)
@Voddgreen Thanks! Ya I started using them for movies now and they're great for those too, an movie with good audio actually sounds better than my hi-fi speakers. Music, games and movies you can't go wrong with these :)
@Quick2000 They are only a 50ohm impedance headphone, so they don't require much power to drive them, although some smaller ipods may struggle. Most laptops and especially any desktop with a soundcard shouldn't have any problem driving them. An amp certainly will improve the sounds though not as noticeable as say a 300ohm set.
@urwishismycommand Thanks man, enjoy your set! Coming up within the coming weeks are reviews of the AR Drone, the Benq XL2410t 3D 120hz gaming monitor, Sony XB500`s, as well as an unboxing of the Herman Miller Aeron and a review later.
Excellent review BUT! you did not explain if to remove the ear cushions is so easy as in the previous version HD555, so that is my questio. Can you remove the ear cushions easily ? I use them many many hours, and normally I need to clean the cushions often. Please, let me know. Thanks.
@mrmister001 They are not hard, but not easy to remove either, just takes a bit of good technique. If you youtube search "sennheiser 558" the result after mine "Unboxing and tour of the Sennheiser HD 558" by sennheiserUSA the shows the perfect way top remove them and makes it look easy :)
@sfgfan09 They are both good headphones, with different strengths and weaknesses, I'd go to a store that has them both and hear what your ears like better, with the genres you listen too.
I'm getting these soon. I've been needing a good pair of headphones, and my Turtle Beach headset recently broke, so I also need a good headset for gaming. These look like the perfect option to satisfy both of my problems.
@HHSbass4 Yep, for gaming and music you won't be disappointed man! I've also started using them alot for movies too and sound amazing when the movie has a good audio quality :)
@Mauriciom1029 I used to just have these sitting in the open before this vid, after seeing all the dust that showed up in the footage, I've cleaned them up and store it in a drawer now - no more dust problems :)
@dashwood123 Its not cheap plastic....plastic can be very high quality, and these are made of high quality plastic, much better plastic than old HD555 or HD595.
tbh i find all sennheiser lack extremely in base :/ you dont have to be a teenager with a sound system in your car to enjoy base as it is the structure of modern music, so having a set of headphones with next to no base seems a bit i dont no pointless unless you listen to opera or classical music. also they are all made of plastic wich is poor for how much you pay.
@Basshead215 598's have more bass, however their is a tape/foam mod that you can do to the 558's that puts the bass levels pretty much on par with 598's. Many people did it on their 555's to turn them into 595's and since the 5X8's are just newer 5X5's, the same holds true. Youtube "555 mod" for more info.
@PureTranceMedia HD598's dont have more bass, in fact, they have less bass than HD558's, but its tighter and more textured. Modding HD558's ruins them IMHO because the bass becomes way too boomy and headphones begin to sound loose / not tight. Its not the same as with 555->595 mod in terms of sound.
@orgasmequalslove Thanks for the kind words bro :) If you want a high-end headphone that does both games and multiple genres of music really well, you definitely wont be disappointing in these!
@111JPRJ111 Hey man, for sound isolation, since they are open design to enhance soundstage and instrument separation, the cost is sound isolation. So in my opinion these are more ideal for home/studio use as opposed to wearing them in public, as you will hear outside sounds AND others will hear your music. Hope that helps and thanks for the support :) Much appreciated bro.
my set of headphones just broke, i listen to stuff like slipknot, avenged sevenfold, system of a down, and all that remains. if you dont know, these are heavy metal bands. Id appreciate it if someone would give me a few ideas on what to buy thats good for the music i listen to.
@psychogamer0845 What's your budget? What type of headphones do you prefer AKA in-ear, supra-aural(on-ear) or cirumaural(around ear)? If around ear, do you want open or closed design? Do you plan on using them for music and games too? If I know these few things I can give you a more informed answer :)
@PureTranceMedia well i dont really have a budget because im getting them for christmas, im goin for the over or around type of heaphone, i dont really know much about design i plan on using them for just music, and i have my eye on some skullcandies, but im still thinking about it
@psychogamer0845 Hmm, in general, most/all audiophile forums look down on skullcandies cause of their lack of sound quality and bloated prices. For Skullcandies (as well as Beats) your paying for the look more than their sound, and with SC's in my opinion, I dont think they are even that sharp looking either. The only decent SC pair are the Aviators and even those only get mildly favourable reviews. In conclusion, avoid S.C's like the plague :)

Have been using these for 2 months, and these are the best headphones I have used, pretty different from the ath m50 and beats studio
shlok1993 2 months ago
@shlok1993 Yep, better soundstage than the m50's, although the m50s have their strengths too. Both put the Studios to shame though :)

are this better than the solo hd?
i listen to rock , industrial metal, electro house dubstep etc and i dont know what to buy this ones or the solo hd
help?
luis61961944 2 months ago
@luis61961944 If you go to any audiophile forum, 99.9% of them will say to stay away from anything by Beats (inferior sound clarity, sub-par frequency response, heavily overpriced etc). I agree with them. HD558's are much better than Solo's in every way except isolation, but that's because they were meant to be open type for greater soundstage.

@PureTranceMedia one more thing
are the HD558s good for ipod? sometimes Sennheiser golden thing is to big for a mobile used
sorry for my bad english , i dont know if i made my self clear
luis61961944 2 months ago
@luis61961944 there are adapters for either way around.amazon.com.3.5mm adapter
KashgroundTM 1 month ago
@luis61961944 yes these are good for Ipod, Iphone and Ipad. I have the 558's bigger brother the 598's and they are very similar to the 558's and they sound great on an Ipod and with my Cowon Iaudio9, to get the best experience out of them use a portable amp like the Fiio E6, Fiio E11 or jdslabs cmoy. But I repeat the 558's will sound great when plugged directly into an Ipod.

@0HelixNL0 Nicenice did you get them? If so how you liking them?
PureTranceMedia 2 months ago
@PureTranceMedia Well the first thing i put them on i noticed that they are very comfortable to wear and that you will get used to them very quickly.
The sound is just perfect and i really enjoy it when listening to music.
When i used them in BF3 i noticed how dynamic the sound can be and it greatly increased my gaming experience while using them.
I can tell that this piece is surely worth the money.
My dad is borrowing them sometimes to hear music from Meatloaf or some classical music haha.
0HelixNL0 2 months ago
@0HelixNL0 Haha nice, I was just telling another commenter I use them for movies now as well and they're actually better than 5.1 my speaker set, I find. And YES definitely worth the money unlike some other brands... *cough* Beats *cough*

Do these sound good when connected to an iPod?
CheesecakeDamnation 2 months ago
@CheesecakeDamnation iPods tend to struggle in comparison with other mp3 players when it comes to powering higher impedance headphones, but luckily the 558's are only 50ohms, so even ipods should be able to drive them fine :)
PureTranceMedia 2 months ago
@CheesecakeDamnation
Not really. Even my A845 can only drive the headphones to only so much when i tested it.
Loudness is not a problem, but clarity and depth will be improved if you get an amp.
Get those value for money ones from Filo or Audio Technica.

PureTranceMedia 2 months ago
I just got these. My first impression is that they are the BEST sound quality that I have ever heard in a pair of headphones. The bass is strong, but not huge. It is very balanced with the mids and highs (which are CRYSTAL clear). Do keep in mind that they are an open back design and people in the same room WILL hear what you are listening to. They are definitely designed for private listening, and they are perfect for that.

windows7BMR 2 months ago
@windows7BMR I don't use a headphone amp (my xFi Titanium desktop soundcard powers them fine) but using an amp definitely will help, just not as much as higher ohm (300+) headphones :)

Right now future shop has a sale for them until December 24th for $50 off. Now $199.99. I'm going to order them online because this is a deal that I don't want to miss. I've done my research and have finally decided on these. Your video helped me a lot!

@1506jet Amazon had them for $145 when I bought them! You might want to check Amazon, it's a HUGE savings.

@Lovishtanu thanks i will just get the senns cus you can try the bose ones at future shop and i think they sound nice, but i have nothing to compare them to because these will be my first higher end headphone to be boought.if people say that the monster beats by dr.dre are bad...and i thought they were good.i think these will astonish me. thanks
1506jet 2 months ago
@1506jet @Lovishtanu Thanks for the props Jet, I'm glad this vid helped. And yes I agree with lovish, just try them both :) I think you will very impressed with the 558's if you havent tried them out yet :D
PureTranceMedia 2 months ago
Should I buy these or the Bose ae2i. I live in Canada and was trying to buy them on kijiji, but I don't know which future shops have them! Great videos btw
1506jet 2 months ago
@1506jet I cannot say about the Bose ae2i but I have been using HD558 for 3 months now. So I can vouch for their quality. It's absolutely amazing. The best way would be to try them both for future shop (you can order online) and keep the one that you like and return the other one. You can also try Klipsh Imageone or AKG.

@Voddgreen Thanks! Ya I started using them for movies now and they're great for those too, an movie with good audio actually sounds better than my hi-fi speakers. Music, games and movies you can't go wrong with these :)
PureTranceMedia 1 month ago
It seems we also would need some sort of additional amplifier to use good headphones with iPhones, laptops, desktops and so forth, Correct?
Quick2000 2 months ago
@Quick2000 They are only a 50ohm impedance headphone, so they don't require much power to drive them, although some smaller ipods may struggle. Most laptops and especially any desktop with a soundcard shouldn't have any problem driving them. An amp certainly will improve the sounds though not as noticeable as say a 300ohm set.

PureTranceMedia 2 months ago
Excellent review BUT! you did not explain if to remove the ear cushions is so easy as in the previous version HD555, so that is my questio. Can you remove the ear cushions easily ? I use them many many hours, and normally I need to clean the cushions often. Please, let me know. Thanks.
mrmister001 2 months ago
@mrmister001 They are not hard, but not easy to remove either, just takes a bit of good technique. If you youtube search "sennheiser 558" the result after mine "Unboxing and tour of the Sennheiser HD 558" by sennheiserUSA the shows the perfect way top remove them and makes it look easy :)

Good review, 2 things I do not like about them, all plastic and the price. For the price I would expect a better build.
dashwood123 3 months ago
@dashwood123 Its not cheap plastic....plastic can be very high quality, and these are made of high quality plastic, much better plastic than old HD555 or HD595.
derbigpr500 3 months ago
@derbigpr500 I guess you must be an expert. I wonder why Sennheiser failed to mention that on the packaging. " Precision high quality plastic"
dashwood123 2 months ago
tbh i find all sennheiser lack extremely in base :/ you dont have to be a teenager with a sound system in your car to enjoy base as it is the structure of modern music, so having a set of headphones with next to no base seems a bit i dont no pointless unless you listen to opera or classical music. also they are all made of plastic wich is poor for how much you pay.
But thanks for the good review :D
Thesupergreenbean 3 months ago
@Thesupergreenbean I have theese, and I find they don't lack base at all

do you know if these or the 598's have more bass? i mean i am a bass head but hell from what ive heard any of sennheiser's products are amazing
Basshead215 3 months ago
@Basshead215 598's have more bass, however their is a tape/foam mod that you can do to the 558's that puts the bass levels pretty much on par with 598's. Many people did it on their 555's to turn them into 595's and since the 5X8's are just newer 5X5's, the same holds true. Youtube "555 mod" for more info.
PureTranceMedia 3 months ago
@PureTranceMedia HD598's dont have more bass, in fact, they have less bass than HD558's, but its tighter and more textured. Modding HD558's ruins them IMHO because the bass becomes way too boomy and headphones begin to sound loose / not tight. Its not the same as with 555->595 mod in terms of sound.
derbigpr500 3 months ago
awesome review! just might get these now

Sup PureSolidness.
Um, just one question. How would you rate the sound isolation (if there is any) on these headphones? Excellent review, look for my subscription :)
Peace.
111JPRJ111 3 months ago
@111JPRJ111 Hey man, for sound isolation, since they are open design to enhance soundstage and instrument separation, the cost is sound isolation. So in my opinion these are more ideal for home/studio use as opposed to wearing them in public, as you will hear outside sounds AND others will hear your music. Hope that helps and thanks for the support :) Much appreciated bro.
PureTranceMedia 3 months ago
my set of headphones just broke, i listen to stuff like slipknot, avenged sevenfold, system of a down, and all that remains. if you dont know, these are heavy metal bands. Id appreciate it if someone would give me a few ideas on what to buy thats good for the music i listen to.
psychogamer0845 3 months ago
@psychogamer0845 What's your budget? What type of headphones do you prefer AKA in-ear, supra-aural(on-ear) or cirumaural(around ear)? If around ear, do you want open or closed design? Do you plan on using them for music and games too? If I know these few things I can give you a more informed answer :)
PureTranceMedia 3 months ago
@PureTranceMedia well i dont really have a budget because im getting them for christmas, im goin for the over or around type of heaphone, i dont really know much about design i plan on using them for just music, and i have my eye on some skullcandies, but im still thinking about it
psychogamer0845 3 months ago
@psychogamer0845 Hmm, in general, most/all audiophile forums look down on skullcandies cause of their lack of sound quality and bloated prices. For Skullcandies (as well as Beats) your paying for the look more than their sound, and with SC's in my opinion, I dont think they are even that sharp looking either. The only decent SC pair are the Aviators and even those only get mildly favourable reviews. In conclusion, avoid S.C's like the plague :)
