@muaythai4lifelife if you mean a guitar with one volume and tone verses a guitar with two volumes and tones youll get more tonal variation in the middle position if you can adjust the volume of either pickup as far as will a guitar sound different if its outfitted with 1 v and 1 t or 2 v 2 t i have never had the opprotunity to do a comparision that would have any real meaning, you would need identical guitars with identical pickups etc. The pot load is different using both pickups so it could
good question- you can just hook the new pickups in where the old pickups were connected but I usually check the quality of the components and if they are sub par I will gut it and start over. I usually follow some kind of vintage gibson or fender schematic for something I am going to play. Sometimes you have to ream the holes out the pots are mounted in if you are going to put USA made parts into a guitar using chinese pots- different shaft diameters.
there are many ways to wire caps in a common way would be to run the cap between the volume pot where the pickup lead is attached to the center lug of the tone pot. Looking at the bottom of the tone pot with the lugs facing you normally the right lug is grounded- you would ground the left lug. Go on my .com site and select a schematic and just wire the tone and volume backwards from what they show.
you may need a schematic which you can find about anywhere on the net but anyway for that scenario you run the pickups to the switch then from the switch to the volume and tone then to the output jack. I couldnt possibly describe every detail with the few words allowed on these posts
I really loved these videos. I have a question; what kind of impedance or capacitor are between the volume and tone pots? It is necessary in any case?
its common for the tone cap to be between .047 and .015. >047 will roll off more treble frequencies than .015 when you turn the volume down. I like a .015 on just about everything because i like to use the volume and tone controls alot so I find it more useful than rolling off almost all of the treble and even midrange if you use a .047- thats just too much I think.
if i switch p90s in for p90 shaped minihumbuckers do i have to resolder everything? this is my first time changing pups and i'm worried about ruining my guitar when i solder
you dont have to resolder everything you could just solder in the pickups so that would be two solder joints. I believe I made a complete new wiring harness for this guitar- its been a few years since we shot this video. I dont recall why I made the new harness- probably just to demonstrate how you would do it.
I shield my guitar used the star grounding and it didn't work - i did something wrong.
All my signal grounds go to one point and my chassis from trem and cavity are seperate, but end at the one ground out to the jack. I either got my pots too hot and i think a cap as well cause now it kinda vowel howls slightly on that pickup - seperate tones with seperate caps for two hums.
buzz city compared my 99$ strat is dead silent in bridge middle mode.
I cant diagnose whats going on without alot more specific info and still- I may have to actually look at it in person but
Normally if you burn up a pot will feel stiff or gritty or both - I bet you have a wire connected wrong somewhere or one of your hot connecdtions is touching shielding paint- sounds like you may have used that?- sorry I cant do more for you
Hi Jason Thanks, Hey i used tape - i tore everything back out of the jackson and tried another guitar. it was either my soldering or wiring. i star grounded everything, this time i just put everything to the pot. twisted all wires as much as possible. toggle is in another cavity, so i used shielded insulated wire for that and it took care of my pickup leads i had to somehow run to the switch.
In short It Works! :D
Guitar is quite silent, even in front of my pc and Huge old 24" CRT Widescreen!!
I got caught up in the star grounding articles on the web but in reality if you shield everything your pot cases should be grounded by the shield, so i didn't have to run ground from tone pot to the volume, but i did run one from the switch to the volume anyway.
I think the main thing is shielding every cavity making sure they are all grounded.
the bare wire from the twisted pair i wasn't sure of i screwed down with the control plates both ends
right if its shielded and your pots contact the sheild you dont have to wire them together to ground them. The video shows the electronics installed without sheilding. You dont have to ground sheilded wires on both ends either.
yes you do- it shows that in the video but notice the two pots closest to the front of the screen are tied together with the exposed braid on the lead wire running to the switch- watch the other videos and it will show you
Thats not a resistor its a capacitor and what it does is it dumps treble to ground (removes treble) when you roll the tone control back.
Installing into a 335? I hadnt planned on that because its so hard for someone that hasnt done it- I do it all the time as thats my favourite guitar to play. I will keep it in mind- thanks.
I just cut it off last night- it was down to my belly button and just got in the way all the time. I was constantly having to throw it over my shoulder to get it out of the way!
I'm afraid to lose the bite of the pickups changing type of wiring.
Thanx :)

Resuming can the Independent wiring modify the bridge and neck pickup when selected alone?
muaythai4lifelife 1 month ago
Hi Jason, I mean an Sg with 2 volumes and 2 tones.
Imagine you have 2 identical guitars. One you wire it when the middle pick up is On so to be a Master volume.
The other with independent volume so on the middle position of the switch you can blend the 2 p-ups by personal taste.
Does the 2 guitars sound different playing only on the bridge alone, or at the neck pick up alone?
muaythai4lifelife 1 month ago
Hi Jason, I have a question about the wiring of the volumes in the independent way on a Sg guitar.
Using that wiring you can really mix both pickups on the middle of the switch.
Do you think the guitar will sound different on the bridge or neck position?
Will the independent wiring affect the sound of the pickups when you are on the bridge or neck?

With installing new pickups, do you always just copying the previous connection or are there some occasions where a little adjustments are need?

Hi there. In which lug must be wired the cap in a left handed tone pot?
I mean in a left hanfed reverse log pot.
Thanx

Thank you- dont forget I have been wiring guitars for decades and wiring it up on a plate like that does make it easier to do a quick and clean job.

Hi Jason these are great videos. What is the reason for the resistor between volume and tone pots?
Are you going to do any pickup install videos with a semi hollow body like an Ephiphone DOT?
