  • "Ancient king in this sylvan court of elm, ash, and yew..."

    Love this song. :)

  • See when I first started to succumb to metal, when I heard terms like 'epic metal' and 'power metal' I did not imagine pop song melodies put to loud guitars and falsetto vocals. I imagined this.

  • synthesizers and keyboards are the best thing to happen to black metal. They unlock the true glory to a majestic nefarious lunatic masterpiece. Many of my fav metal musicians are actually keyboard players.

  • Why doesn't everybody listen to Bal-Sagoth? I will tell you.

Not everybody is cut out to listen to music of this calibre of epicness. For some people, the epicness is too much to bear. Fans of Bal-Sagoth can absorb the epicness like heat shield tiles on a space shuttle.

  • @TonoFonseca hell yea...

  • @TonoFonseca That and we're all secret cultists or barbarian warriors.

  • @reniart i agree... Hail Woden!!

  • when most people think of black metal, they think only of poorly written lyrics, hatred,

    and doom.

this song defies those ideas, as do all other songs by Bal-Sagoth

  • 1:03 is quite possibly the most beautiful passage ever. It sets such an incredible tone, like I really don't know what to do with myself right now. Why am I just now listening to this.

  • Please Please Please Bal Sagoth, come back to us! You've given us 7 perfect albums, just one more?

  • Lie down, close your eyes and inhale every single note of this amazing composition, epic, metal, ???? who cares, is just those unique songs that can take you really far away from any time and dimension.

    Suberb

  • @icapelo80 I totally Agree!!!\o/ hail bal-sagoth \o/

  • Mine balls doth saggeth.

  • this is beyond epic

  • This is their best song, in my opinion. Byron could capture the simplicity of the ancient englishman, and he could imagine what a mercian man would think of a good death. You'll never find anything like this at all, this is very unique and special, and the music is just perfectly written. Well thought, and creating the most suitable ambience to the words. Just look at my username.

  • This band is incredible, they are fucking amazing composers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hail Bal-Sagoth!!

  • @flex0rz2 And i'm supposed to believe you're the "god" of real metal?

  • @flex0rz2 i think the cheeseboards are awesome!!! (big smile) haha

  • @flex0rz2 you suck donkey balls and bal-sagoth is epic.

  • @flex0rz2 and whats real metal o great metal master???

  • The background strings at 1:02 and 3:50 sounds incredible. They alone makes this song worth hearing. (sorry, not into black metal)

  • BAL SAGOTH FOREVER.

  • @Saruman007 all Im saying is that Bal Sagoth started out as a godly black-death metal band with Lemuria and Starfire but later albums let the synth get a little too overdone and lost some of the metal roots. But still a fantastic band with there own style.

  • blah blah blah I dont like the vocals blah blah blah I dont like the synths blah blah blah this band would be great if... Just fuck off and listen to other stuff. Bal Sagoth is amazing period.

  • @AngelofDeathMetal This band IS awesome, and the vocals are one of my favorite parts. This isnt a death metal band or a power metal band they have their own style and just listen to Black moon or Cthonic Chronicles this is one of the most original bands out there. Maybe sometimes the synths are a little overdone but still one of my best all time bands.

  • @AngelofDethMetal fuck you, this singer makes whole Bal Sagoth complete, it´s your opinion that he sucks, but he is not making music only for you. Don´t post useless coments because you don´t understand a shit about something.

  • @halo2486x No way, most of this band's songs are symphonic black style, clean singing wouldnt fit them at all.

  • @halo2846x fuck you, this singer makes whole Bal Sagoth complete, it´s your opinion that he sucks, but he is not making music only for you. Don´t post useless coments because you don´t understand a shit about something.

  • unique metal that transfers us into other dimensions of the cosmic multiverse

  • HAHHAA!!! 5 people are lost in the deep woods!!!!

  • I cant believe im gonna be playing with these guys

  • If you guys really are going to bicker so much about the classification, their official classification is Epic Britannic Black Metal (according to them,) but since this is one of their greatest songs, it's probably a better idea to just enjoy the song rather than senselessly bickering. Also, move on to some of Bal-Sagoth's other songs/albums, they're all good (Except "A black moon..." Imho)

  • they r too unique to perfectly fit a label

  • i find little traces of viking metal. could someone elaborate?

  • @stiffaction It's more Anglo-Saxon metal I guess, at least as far as the song's lyrics and story, IMHO.

  • HUP!

  • FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!THEY ARE FANTASTIC!!

  • The ravens are on the wing-ahhh :)

  • 200 likes. 4 dislikes. Thats "about" 1:50 ratio? Maybe we should, dare I say, control the world?

  • Wow! ;P BS for ever!!!!!!!!

  • This is some sick trumpet metal

  • @MrScorn wtf is trumpet metal? why are you trying to classify everythng you hear? what if i will fart unbelievably long, record it and add it to some song as an instrument? this is just dumb

  • @vavra222 you mean dubstep?

  • @MrScorn lol, i dunno what to say, i don´t know shit about some dubstep so i wont try to answer :D

if you mean dubstep sounds like my farting used in some song, maybe you´re right

  • @vavra222 Yeah, I was joking about the whole trumpet metal thing, thought it was funny

  • @MrScorn Okay :D

  • 0:58 is such an epic part! this band is so underrated!

  • I have to classify it, sorry if that offends you. Why? i dunno, i think unclassified things represents "disorder" for me. This is (epic) symphonic black/death metal.

  • ahahaa everytime i listen to this song,i feel like dancing !!!!! hhahaha

  • Masterful lyrics about Anglo-Saxon heathenism and the importance of trees to our pagan ancestors.

This is one of my favourite songs by the mighty Sagoth.

  • @3lraro So? Sodomy is metal as fuck.

  • @Asmodeus8797 Well put, mate. Not only trees but the whole sylvan ambient was very important to them. The forests were the background to everything mystic and mysterious in ancient Europe, and especially amongst the pagan branches.

  • damn right

  • I give you my hail,

    I give you my blood,

    I give you my life,

    O' Bal Sagoth.

  • so much teenage souvenirs!

  • HAIL FROM FINLAND !! BLODU OK JARNA BROTHERS !!

  • sooo pretty^^

  • Good song.

  • fucking love concept albums, and their concepts rule

  • A THOUSAND SWAORDS GLEAMING BENEATH THE BLAZON OF THE HYPERBORIAN EMPIRE!!!! BARBARIAN BLACKMETAL HORDES! HAIL!!

  • HAIL BAL SOGOTH MOTHERFUCKERS!!! HAIL BAL SAGOTH!!!! THESE GUYS RULE!!!! Their last album took way too long to be released the chitonic chronicles... i hope something new comes soon. seems like they have internal struggles. i hope its not over.. long live BAL SAGOTH! this song is great but not my favoret album. atlantice assendant and their second ultima tule ( too long to bother typeing) the best part about bal sagoth though... is their incredibley winded titles.i love this band.

  • hail bal-sagoth..........\\m//

  • the guy on the right is holding a daedric weapon :P

  • THE RAVENS ARE ON THE WING! Bal Sagoth rule.

  • Damn guys, you're almost as easy to troll as juggalos.

  • *sigh* As far as trolls go, this guy is pretty amusing, I guess.

  • Warning: Being jwatson626 will make you gay.

  • @jwatson626 You're more retarded than a scientologist. Seek psychological help.

  • No, you're just some dumb troll. Now shut the fuck up and get a fucking life, faggot.

  • @Crossbowman sounds like someones mad

  • @ICreamsodAI No, I just hate retarded people.

  • @Crossbowman hate requires anger

  • @ICreamsodAI Not necessarily. Perhaps at first yes, but even in that case I'm not angry now and I still hate that retard.

  • @ICreamsodAI He was mad because he knows these guys suck and will never be as good as Nine Inch Nails or HIM.

  • @jwatson626... scientologist ...lol you are either taking the piss or a complete tool ...why are you even commenting on bal you piece .....pagans will kill you and rip your eyes out and shit down your throat ...lmao

  • Comment removed

  • @jwatson626 Tom Cruise! I didn't know you liked Youtube! lol

  • @jwatson626 note Ville Vallo is a fag.

  • @jwatson626 i also know tht HIM (including ville vallo) are the worst thing to come out of finland.... actually i take tht back, the rasmus are, but him are a close second

  • @jwatson626 How the hell is he a black metal innovator? the only metal albums he has been in is like the 69 eyes and they are gothic metal. He probably doesn't know what Black metal is.

  • @Blacksmith676 He infuses dark thematic material with blazing guitars and smashing blast beaten drums. Many other bands have tried to copy his style but failed. But it is a FACT that most black metal bands are simply trying to follow the lead of the great HIM. You know this. I know this. It is common knowledge.

  • @jwatson626 Most Black metal bands try to follow Venom, Bathory and the Bands from the Black Circle. I bet alot of Black Metal bands don't even who what the fuck HIM is. I have yet to see a Black Metal band have HIM as an influence. HIM just feels like a failed attempt of a Sabbath Tribute Band. Now I suggest you get your head out of your ass and talk to Abbath and see if he was influenced by HIM

  • @jwatson626 Except well all know that Nickleback sucks the big one. HIM never played anything Symphonic. And for one, Opeth never played any Rock music. And Opeth Would never have been influenced by Nickleback as Nickleback was formed in 1995 and Opeth was formed 1990

  • @jwatson626 On the Archives. I see no Deviations from their genre which has always been Extreme Progressive Metal with the Extreme being Death Metal as Mikael is also singer for Bloodbath. And when the Fuck is Nickleback soulful? Almost all their songs sound the same and they are hated in the rock scene. Opeth is usually known for Death metal with Acoustic parts while incorporating Progressive Elements of Blues and Jazz. And I'm well versed in Music and its Gregorian History thank you very much.

  • @Blacksmith676 Dude, jwatson is fucking with you. He's just a troll out to get a response from people. Ignore that shit. ;)

  • @Saruman007 I know. But its just fun to be fucking with this troll. Hes pretty funny in a very pathetic way.

  • @Blacksmith676 well said... tell these new comers the deal. and though what you say is true about opeths music traits overall opeth was actually considered doom metal for awhile do to the lyrical content...

  • @jwatson626 I thought scientologist wre actually against science.

  • @jwatson626 who the fucks trent Reznor?

well... im best friends with joe antcliffe... so u know... i win :)

  • @gibbygibson666

Trent Reznor, from Nine Inch Nails. They're an awesome band, as well.

  • Sounds like a black metal theme song for a Saturday morning cartoon. Battle Magic!

  • 1:03 = Fucking Epic!

  • This is good but I think it would be better if the cover was easier to take more seriously

  • i love this band, its hard enought to make a concept album, let alone a concept career. this guy could write novels based all his albums(i read in an interview years ago that he wants to something like the novel or comic books)

  • they are 'symphonic black metal' apparently

  • This is like... Gauntlet Legends N64 metal

    ... fantastic.

  • Head Banging all Over.

  • i have regularly had battle magic on very loud at 3 in the morning when i have just got home from a night out completely trashed and still have stuff to drink ...untill the sun comes up yo xD

  • bal originally had black metal overtones but not in the norwiegian sense they where part of a group of bands that came from the uk with a different style to our norse brothers but on the back of the black metal scene ..the two notable being bal and cradle who both had very individual styles ...both bands developed theyre own styles and cannot really be called black metal allthough they use dark matter in style .

  • I bounce around in my underpants while I listen to this song.

  • this band has the coolest album art

  • Awesome!

Do you guys know more bands like this?

I'm looking for something like Thronar;)

  • @TheAhti

    Google: viking and pagan metal

  • I'm glad someone still remembers these guys. Not sure how many people have listened to these guys, let alone read the liner notes - based off the comments. Each album is an 'epic adventure' of a hero from a fantastical planet to off world battles. Like D&D meets Metal.

  • I see ...some legions of the Black Moon here today, yeaaah! :D

    Splendid song...

  • cool stuff

  • Awesome! My favourite Bal Sagoth piece.

  • i would describe this as extreme power metal.

  • fftw!

  • I get it Bal-sagoth, the ravens are in fact on the wing!

  • my fav song from bal-sagoth, great memories.

  • the album cover says it all

  • I'm hoping beyond all hopes that they come out with a new album. A band like this should continue for years to come. There is no comparison to their epic sound and tales.

  • Hail bal-sagoth! This band is unique, compare to the other ones, love this band, and the lyrics I just say WOOOOW!!! This band have thousands of stars on lyrics, best lyrics than others bands!!! every time I listen to their music , I dream the world of theirs lyrics!! Hail bal-sagoth

  • check out Stormlord, epic black metal with great lyrics, and amazing music

  • THE RAVENS ARE ON THE WING

  • Fucking epic.

  • Why does everybody always have to try to classify everything? Just listen to it.

  • makes me think of that nintendo game, dragon's lair ha ha

  • Das Fuchten Musiken Ich Lieben

  • i can hear in this where turisas got some mighty influence

  • this song is awesome!! just one question r the rest of their songs like this?? im not a big fan of black metal but this sounds more like power!!

  • A lot of their songs sound "similar" to this, but many of them are far more black metal oriented.

  • may name some similar soundin to this 1

  • Nazgul kinda does

  • They're Fantasy Metal, so there's some symphonic(black metal), and power metal elements

  • @aae1234, the only album from Bal-Sagoth which should be called black metal is A Black Moon Broads Over Lemuria. the latest albums isn't very black metal. they're more like Extreme Epic Metal, or an endless adventure of epic histories. Bal-Sagoth uses black metal growls/screams yes, but the lyrics aren't very black metal =) they're more like reading a huge fantasy book =D

  • @MariusMMS

lemuria is more death metal tbf..

starfire is clearly the most BM of them all.

  • yeah, you got a point there :D

  • Why does it matter what genre it is? You limit things by sticking labels to them.

  • This song has an awesome feeling :D

  • indeed!

  • well its true that some of their songs don't sound like black metal musically, but then there are some that definitely do have a strong black metal element.

I prefer their blacker songs more.

  • Actually,if you want to judge by the voice,it is some kind of black metal, however if you could listen their music without the vocals,i really don't think you could describe them as black metal, nor any other specific genre of metal for that matter. They are truly a pioneers of this kind of metal and in my opinion, one of the most inovative and concerning quality, one of the best bands on metal scene.

  • I agree.

  • Thank you :)

  • @PurePaganPride yeah true, if anything it would be powermetal coz the notes are often quite high.

  • @PurePaganPride i agree also pagan pride your name says it all may the tribes unite .

  • @PurePaganPride good call dude

  • @PurePaganPride Their music is extremely easy o create, there is barely any creativity to it.

  • @DerAnstifter

Well... Ok. Whatever you say. I presume your knowledge about creating music is far greater then my own, so I will not argue... I just know I like it very much.

And, if I may add... If what you say is considered to be true by majority, I must say that never before have I encountered band with such low level of creativity that succeeded in casting such potent spell on me like Bal-Sagoth did. Anyway... It doesnt matter. I like them, you don't ( i guess) and it's fine by me.

  • @PurePaganPride However, yesterday I was in the mood of listening to them and downloaded their discography. However, I'd never buy a CD by them.

  • this is great, but why is the artwork so nwobhm? this is symphonic black thrash NOT saxon or something

  • The guys in Bal-Sagoth are fans of fantasy literature, which the picture represents.

  • @defyexistance bal is all fantasy and the artwork is based on byrons fantasy writing i dont think it is intended to be nwobhm ....just get the discography listen and read and you will get it :) ..such an awsome band it took me a while to get into them properly and i have had a full on love affair with them lmao ..

  • weird but bloody good

  • this is more like, symphonic power metal

but black not this isn't black metal

but is a realy good band

  • this is fucking black metal

  • old man's child, MayheM, Immortal, morgul, Nightside Glance, Satyricon, Vesania even dimmu borgir is more BM that this band

this band is more Extreme power metal (noooo not like dragonforce) like wintersun, Kalmah and Norther

but as i said this is not BM

  • Extreme power metal lol. I think you mean MeloDeath

  • Nop, insomnium, arch enemy, amon amarth, edge of sanity, at the gates, hypocrisy, dark lunacy and dark tranquiliti, thats melo death

  • I'll take it you've not listened to their older material then? Don't make sweeping generalisations about the band's music without having the references to back it up. Look up anything off 'A black moon broods over Lemuria' and you'll see what I mean. I wouldn't call this song,or any of the newer material BM either,I'd just call it amazing and leave it at that.

  • @gabohades13 This band predates those plastic sympho-black bands you mentioned, as well as the more homoerotic stuff you call "extreme power metal". Bal-Sagoth are the CREATORS of their sound. They don't "sound like". Copycats try to sound like Bal-Sagoth but are never near. I command them to die.

  • This is my WoW leveling music >.>
