See when I first started to succumb to metal, when I heard terms like 'epic metal' and 'power metal' I did not imagine pop song melodies put to loud guitars and falsetto vocals. I imagined this.
synthesizers and keyboards are the best thing to happen to black metal. They unlock the true glory to a majestic nefarious lunatic masterpiece. Many of my fav metal musicians are actually keyboard players.
Why doesn't everybody listen to Bal-Sagoth? I will tell you.
Not everybody is cut out to listen to music of this calibre of epicness. For some people, the epicness is too much to bear. Fans of Bal-Sagoth can absorb the epicness like heat shield tiles on a space shuttle.
1:03 is quite possibly the most beautiful passage ever. It sets such an incredible tone, like I really don't know what to do with myself right now. Why am I just now listening to this.
Lie down, close your eyes and inhale every single note of this amazing composition, epic, metal, ???? who cares, is just those unique songs that can take you really far away from any time and dimension.
This is their best song, in my opinion. Byron could capture the simplicity of the ancient englishman, and he could imagine what a mercian man would think of a good death. You'll never find anything like this at all, this is very unique and special, and the music is just perfectly written. Well thought, and creating the most suitable ambience to the words. Just look at my username.
@Saruman007 all Im saying is that Bal Sagoth started out as a godly black-death metal band with Lemuria and Starfire but later albums let the synth get a little too overdone and lost some of the metal roots. But still a fantastic band with there own style.

If you guys really are going to bicker so much about the classification, their official classification is Epic Britannic Black Metal (according to them,) but since this is one of their greatest songs, it's probably a better idea to just enjoy the song rather than senselessly bickering. Also, move on to some of Bal-Sagoth's other songs/albums, they're all good (Except "A black moon..." Imho)
@MrScorn wtf is trumpet metal? why are you trying to classify everythng you hear? what if i will fart unbelievably long, record it and add it to some song as an instrument? this is just dumb
I have to classify it, sorry if that offends you. Why? i dunno, i think unclassified things represents "disorder" for me. This is (epic) symphonic black/death metal.
@Asmodeus8797 Well put, mate. Not only trees but the whole sylvan ambient was very important to them. The forests were the background to everything mystic and mysterious in ancient Europe, and especially amongst the pagan branches.

@jwatson626 i also know tht HIM (including ville vallo) are the worst thing to come out of finland.... actually i take tht back, the rasmus are, but him are a close second
@jwatson626 How the hell is he a black metal innovator? the only metal albums he has been in is like the 69 eyes and they are gothic metal. He probably doesn't know what Black metal is.
@Blacksmith676 He infuses dark thematic material with blazing guitars and smashing blast beaten drums. Many other bands have tried to copy his style but failed. But it is a FACT that most black metal bands are simply trying to follow the lead of the great HIM. You know this. I know this. It is common knowledge.
@jwatson626 Most Black metal bands try to follow Venom, Bathory and the Bands from the Black Circle. I bet alot of Black Metal bands don't even who what the fuck HIM is. I have yet to see a Black Metal band have HIM as an influence. HIM just feels like a failed attempt of a Sabbath Tribute Band. Now I suggest you get your head out of your ass and talk to Abbath and see if he was influenced by HIM

@Blacksmith676 I'm not friends with Abbath. But I do know the guys in Opeth and they told me that before they decided to take a more straight-forward Nickelback-influenced approach to rock and roll they were trying to emulate the mood and sound of HIM. I also know for a fact that many of the same soundscapes and chord progressions used by Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth were first innovated by HIM. Whether or not you care to accept these facts does not make them any less true.
@jwatson626 Except well all know that Nickleback sucks the big one. HIM never played anything Symphonic. And for one, Opeth never played any Rock music. And Opeth Would never have been influenced by Nickleback as Nickleback was formed in 1995 and Opeth was formed 1990

@Blacksmith676 --- Well, of course. I'm saying that Opeth were more blackmetal originally, but in later years they've decided to follow the lead of Nickleback and aim for a heavier and soulful approach. You obviously know nothing about music and are having trouble paying attention to what I'm saying. Perhaps you should get a book on music history or something and you'll learn a thing or two.
@jwatson626 On the Archives. I see no Deviations from their genre which has always been Extreme Progressive Metal with the Extreme being Death Metal as Mikael is also singer for Bloodbath. And when the Fuck is Nickleback soulful? Almost all their songs sound the same and they are hated in the rock scene. Opeth is usually known for Death metal with Acoustic parts while incorporating Progressive Elements of Blues and Jazz. And I'm well versed in Music and its Gregorian History thank you very much.

@Blacksmith676 Nickleback and HIM have sold MILLIONS of records. Bal Sagoth has sold like 100 or something. So don't talk to me about hated in the rock scene because Nickelback and HIM are obviously more loved than any of the poser bands you listen to. Perhaps if Bal Sagoth spent as much time studying Trent Reznor's production technique as they do trying to copy Ville Vallo they might actually have an album worth listening to.
@Blacksmith676 well said... tell these new comers the deal. and though what you say is true about opeths music traits overall opeth was actually considered doom metal for awhile do to the lyrical content...
i love this band, its hard enought to make a concept album, let alone a concept career. this guy could write novels based all his albums(i read in an interview years ago that he wants to something like the novel or comic books)
i have regularly had battle magic on very loud at 3 in the morning when i have just got home from a night out completely trashed and still have stuff to drink ...untill the sun comes up yo xD
bal originally had black metal overtones but not in the norwiegian sense they where part of a group of bands that came from the uk with a different style to our norse brothers but on the back of the black metal scene ..the two notable being bal and cradle who both had very individual styles ...both bands developed theyre own styles and cannot really be called black metal allthough they use dark matter in style .
I'm glad someone still remembers these guys. Not sure how many people have listened to these guys, let alone read the liner notes - based off the comments. Each album is an 'epic adventure' of a hero from a fantastical planet to off world battles. Like D&D meets Metal.
I'm hoping beyond all hopes that they come out with a new album. A band like this should continue for years to come. There is no comparison to their epic sound and tales.
Hail bal-sagoth! This band is unique, compare to the other ones, love this band, and the lyrics I just say WOOOOW!!! This band have thousands of stars on lyrics, best lyrics than others bands!!! every time I listen to their music , I dream the world of theirs lyrics!! Hail bal-sagoth
@aae1234, the only album from Bal-Sagoth which should be called black metal is A Black Moon Broads Over Lemuria. the latest albums isn't very black metal. they're more like Extreme Epic Metal, or an endless adventure of epic histories. Bal-Sagoth uses black metal growls/screams yes, but the lyrics aren't very black metal =) they're more like reading a huge fantasy book =D
well its true that some of their songs don't sound like black metal musically, but then there are some that definitely do have a strong black metal element.
Actually,if you want to judge by the voice,it is some kind of black metal, however if you could listen their music without the vocals,i really don't think you could describe them as black metal, nor any other specific genre of metal for that matter. They are truly a pioneers of this kind of metal and in my opinion, one of the most inovative and concerning quality, one of the best bands on metal scene.
Well... Ok. Whatever you say. I presume your knowledge about creating music is far greater then my own, so I will not argue... I just know I like it very much.
And, if I may add... If what you say is considered to be true by majority, I must say that never before have I encountered band with such low level of creativity that succeeded in casting such potent spell on me like Bal-Sagoth did. Anyway... It doesnt matter. I like them, you don't ( i guess) and it's fine by me.
@defyexistance bal is all fantasy and the artwork is based on byrons fantasy writing i dont think it is intended to be nwobhm ....just get the discography listen and read and you will get it :) ..such an awsome band it took me a while to get into them properly and i have had a full on love affair with them lmao ..

I love the music, but I get a little annoyed with the talking vocals. Sing if you want, scream if you want, but my one criticism of BS is that the overdo the talking.
I'll take it you've not listened to their older material then? Don't make sweeping generalisations about the band's music without having the references to back it up. Look up anything off 'A black moon broods over Lemuria' and you'll see what I mean. I wouldn't call this song,or any of the newer material BM either,I'd just call it amazing and leave it at that.
@gabohades13 This band predates those plastic sympho-black bands you mentioned, as well as the more homoerotic stuff you call "extreme power metal". Bal-Sagoth are the CREATORS of their sound. They don't "sound like". Copycats try to sound like Bal-Sagoth but are never near. I command them to die.
"Ancient king in this sylvan court of elm, ash, and yew..."
Love this song. :)

@Blacksmith676 Dude, jwatson is fucking with you. He's just a troll out to get a response from people. Ignore that shit. ;)

@Blacksmith676 well said... tell these new comers the deal. and though what you say is true about opeths music traits overall opeth was actually considered doom metal for awhile do to the lyrical content...

i love this band, its hard enought to make a concept album, let alone a concept career. this guy could write novels based all his albums(i read in an interview years ago that he wants to something like the novel or comic books)

they are 'symphonic black metal' apparently

bal originally had black metal overtones but not in the norwiegian sense they where part of a group of bands that came from the uk with a different style to our norse brothers but on the back of the black metal scene ..the two notable being bal and cradle who both had very individual styles ...both bands developed theyre own styles and cannot really be called black metal allthough they use dark matter in style .

Hail bal-sagoth

aae1234 2 years ago
A lot of their songs sound "similar" to this, but many of them are far more black metal oriented.
Saruman007 2 years ago
may name some similar soundin to this 1
aae1234 2 years ago
Nazgul kinda does
oblivionspawn07 2 years ago
They're Fantasy Metal, so there's some symphonic(black metal), and power metal elements
MrScorn 2 years ago 4
@aae1234, the only album from Bal-Sagoth which should be called black metal is A Black Moon Broads Over Lemuria. the latest albums isn't very black metal. they're more like Extreme Epic Metal, or an endless adventure of epic histories. Bal-Sagoth uses black metal growls/screams yes, but the lyrics aren't very black metal =) they're more like reading a huge fantasy book =D
MariusMMS 1 year ago 8
@MariusMMS
lemuria is more death metal tbf..
starfire is clearly the most BM of them all.
thepissflap 1 year ago 3
yeah, you got a point there :D

Why does it matter what genre it is? You limit things by sticking labels to them.

fredvain 2 years ago 3
well its true that some of their songs don't sound like black metal musically, but then there are some that definitely do have a strong black metal element.
I prefer their blacker songs more.
voorish 2 years ago 4
Actually,if you want to judge by the voice,it is some kind of black metal, however if you could listen their music without the vocals,i really don't think you could describe them as black metal, nor any other specific genre of metal for that matter. They are truly a pioneers of this kind of metal and in my opinion, one of the most inovative and concerning quality, one of the best bands on metal scene.

@DerAnstifter
Well...
PurePaganPride 1 year ago
@PurePaganPride However, yesterday I was in the mood of listening to them and downloaded their discography. However, I'd never buy a CD by them.
LetsGetThisClear 1 year ago
this is great, but why is the artwork so nwobhm? this is symphonic black thrash NOT saxon or something
defyexistance 2 years ago
The guys in Bal-Sagoth are fans of fantasy literature, which the picture represents.
Crossbowman 2 years ago 3
@defyexistance bal is all fantasy and the artwork is based on byrons fantasy writing i dont think it is intended to be nwobhm ....just get the discography listen and read and you will get it :) ..such an awsome band it took me a while to get into them properly and i have had a full on love affair with them lmao ..

I love the music, but I get a little annoyed with the talking vocals. Sing if you want, scream if you want, but my one criticism of BS is that the overdo the talking.
Brilliant son nonetheless.

this band is more Extreme power metal (noooo not like dragonforce) like wintersun, Kalmah and Norther
but as i said this is not BM

Extreme power metal lol. I think you mean MeloDeath

Nop, insomnium, arch enemy, amon amarth, edge of sanity, at the gates, hypocrisy, dark lunacy and dark tranquiliti, thats melo death
gabohades13 2 years ago
I'll take it you've not listened to their older material then? Don't make sweeping generalisations about the band's music without having the references to back it up. Look up anything off 'A black moon broods over Lemuria' and you'll see what I mean. I wouldn't call this song,or any of the newer material BM either,I'd just call it amazing and leave it at that.
happilemon 2 years ago 3
@gabohades13 This band predates those plastic sympho-black bands you mentioned, as well as the more homoerotic stuff you call "extreme power metal". Bal-Sagoth are the CREATORS of their sound. They don't "sound like". Copycats try to sound like Bal-Sagoth but are never near. I command them to die.
