I would think plastic buckets would be better than metal. The sun sun can make metal hot enough to burn. plastic will be cool to the touch also. Placing the eyes down will take longer for them to get started. Even covering them up completely, they will still find their way out if you don't cover them too much. just enough till you can't see them.
Way to go Iron Head! Myt husband has taken up our whole back yard with this 30 X 30 foot shop he build in our back yard to work on his cars ! Any more ideas for growing in small places would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much !
the miracle grow might say "organic mix" on the bag but trust me ... it aint organic ..it just contains some organic materials ,, and some words on the bag to sell to people who don't know . the fertilizer in it is not organic ,, tha'ts one thing for sure !
Thank you. Also you say do not put the dirt back into your garden because it might be blight and nothing will grow. However you said it was ok to put it in your flower garden. Was that an inside joke against flower gardens or it wont hurt the flowers? You said not to put it in your garden, assuming you meant vegetable garden. Would it effect all vegetables or only potatoes?
I am more interested in how you burnt out your buckets so you could grow your potatoes safely. How much fire do you need for the buckets you used and how long did you burn it for. Does burning the buckets out work for all buckets (Metal) or only some regarding the destroying of certain chemicals. I am a little catious on stuff like that.
@Jerrid3 the buckets i used was acrylic concrete sealer.......hazardous....thats why i burned them......ifyou use latex paint buckets, just wash with water......
@ironhead41 No I mean how exactly did you burn them out? Was it for a few seconds, for an hour, a day? Did you simply use wood, gasolin, a blow torch?
hello ironhead, a quick question, my potatos in my buckets are just starting to push through the soil, at what stage should I put more soil in to cover up the new growth
your video was very informative. thank you for posting it :) your accent makes it have character. i didn't know why you couldn't plant potatoes in the same area twice.. so this bucket thing makes perfect sense. :) thanks for sharing! how did they turn out???
i did a vid on tater update today. all lookin good. i hope i can upload tonight. thanks for the comment, im just me, no fronts, what you see is what you get.

My Dad says if you plant the eye facing down, your potato will grow much heartier.

you can also grow potatoes in straw, leaves. Also, pluck off the flowers to force them to keep growing more taters!

cavealaska1 1 year ago
@cavealaska1 keep adding dirt up to the bottom leaf.....if the stem is in dirt, it will root out and make taters.....

another good tip is to put a piece of new paper over the potato eyes before you cover with dirt that way you dont get dirt in their eyes

@ironhead41 I'm in Missouri. It's a bit tough understanding your thick Carolina accent, but if I strain and pay close attention I can manage. :-)
