Peter Jackson did a good job, fleshed out the main characters just so that they came out as believable on the big screen. The Aragorn in the books could be a rather pompous twit when he was showing off The-Sword-that-was-broken, Anduril to the local gentry.
I loved what Peter Jackson did with The Lord of The Rings, I owe him my life for that. But Arwen's too much of screen time was a mistake, except for this part. This is actually cool because it brings another strong female character to the trilogy. The thing annoying me is that when it comes to Éowyn there's a huge discussion saying she didn't do anything and that Merry did all the job (lolwut?) but when it comes to Arwen then she's such a badass. Why? Cause she's hotter... That's all.
@AronofskysKumo I don't know, as Savage as Eowyn was, Arwen had a much softer way of dealing with things, very elegant ... I just proved your point more saying that she was just beautiful in general throughout the movie lol
I don't know how Merry did everything, though, that's a hater comment o_o
@AronofskysKumo I think it's because Eowyn was trying to show off the fact that she went to war that made people more critical. You could tell Arwen wasnt really wanting to fight, and only said "if you want him, come and claim him!" to not come across as a cowardly.
I can't believe that Galadriel actually is Arwen's grandmother. I would love to see this grandmother more in action XD. Peter Jackson make us hunger for Power of those Ring Bearers XD.
She was standing maybe 20 feet away from them, they could just moved towards her and they would have been fine, but noooo, they all tried to outrun the river. For immortal spirits of past kings, they're pretty stupid.
Umm, so I know this may sound dumb, but how & to what extent did the elves have influence and/or control over nature, in general? Because I know--as many of the earlier responders mentioned--that in the book, Elrond, w/ the help of Gandalf, of course, made the river rise. Also, in TTT, I remember someone (Legolas, I think) mention that the elves had taught the trees to speak, I think, in Fangorn forest.
So, that's primarily, where my question comes from.
I always loved how it's like - "Shit she just destroyed their horses!" And then later on the Wraiths return and are like - "Fuck horses, we'll just ride DRAGONS INSTEAD" Well done, Arwen. Lol
@Eestivampyr That was to fool the Ringwraiths into thinking she wanted to duel with them, when in fact she was really trying to lure them into the Loudwater.
No, frodo rode across the water and everything alone, glorfindel just came cos elrond sent him.Horse was doing everything frodo was just lying there cos morgul blade stabbed him. Then elrong saved him. That's what i read.
They say in the book that the flood would not have taken on the form of stampeding horses were it not for Gandalf, who was already in Rivendell, and who added a bit of his own magic to the spell, remotely. Elrond could sense it when his daughter crossed into the river with Frodo, as it's the border of his realm, and therefore within his power. He could feel that they were in trouble (pursed by the Nazgul), and so he asked Gandalf for a little help. :)
@bellagirl89 Lol, indeed yes, you are correct. I am, truth be told, a massive pothead, and there is SO much Tolkien material, one does tend to get confused... but I have corrected people about that same issue before, which makes me feel like an even bigger douche, so yeah: Well done, I tip my hat to you, ma'am. :)
@rocyou819 Yah yah, but seriously: If you read enough Tolkien you will get confused all the time, as there is SO much info, and so many different versions of stories, which have been re-worked and edited and chopped and all that, so I don't feel like too much of an idiot, only slightly so.
@baseball7070 NO. Absolutely not. Nazgul: Neither living nor dead. They are shown later on in the series, during 2nd and 3rd movies. Only their horses, thats why they rode on the fell beast afterwords
@IGiveMyLife2Follow I think it's weird that they don't mention the fact that Arwen doesn't ride Frodo into Rivendell over the Ford, Glorfindel does. And Frodo isn't whisked off straightaway, either, the Hobbits and Aragorn have to walk for a long time before the Nazgul show up again.
I know some stuff has to be changed, but giving his part to Arwen seemed a bit weird. Does anyone necessarily think that Glorfindel is an extraneous character?
@IGiveMyLife2Follow Aye, I didn't find out until I started digging some. Also, I remember hearing or reading somewhere that Elrond is half-elven.. Is that true? ._o
@kadajshm I don't know if someone already answered your question but yeah he does come from the half-elven line through his grandfather, Tuor who was from the House of Haleth and Hador. His Grandmother, Idril (Tuor's wife), was from the house of Finwe and Ingwe (Noldor and Vanyar). From his mother's side, however, not only is he again half-elven (Lutien and Beren-gr8-grandparents) but he is also part Maian (gr8, gr8-grandparents-Melian and Thingol aka Elwe). Hope this helps :)
It wasn't her who did this in the book though was it? It was a male elf, can't remember the name. The made Arwen's part bigger than it was in the book, but it works I suppose. I've always been more of a Eowyn girl myself...
If I was Arwen I would be sitting there *thinking: Ah shit, shit shit shit shit shit don't draw your swords, don't dra- DAMNIT! Eh..... hmmmm...... river horses? yeah, lets get the river horses!*
She says : "Nin o Chithaeglir lasto beth daer; Rimmo nin Bruinen dan in Ulaer! Nin o Chithaeglir lasto beth daer; Rimmo nin Bruinen dan in Ulaer!"
It means : "Waters of the Misty Mountains listen to the great word; flow waters of Loadwater against the Ringwraiths! Waters of the Misty Mountains listen to the great word; flow waters of Loadwater against the Ringwraiths!"
@EverythingsUpload lol when I made my comment last year, they said the movie was going to be released in 2011 but obviously their schedules now been pushed back a little lol I think this movie(s) will floor critics when it's released, Peter Jackson is probably one of the best directors of our time and I fully believe in his ability to deliver a movie that will be remembered for decades to come =]
@EverythingsUpload Actually, I really wish that they'd create a set of movies on the Silmarillion and the unfinished tales. Now if THOSE books were ever produced on film, they would be better than the original trillogy AND the two hobbit films combined. Period. I've got nothing at all against any of the original trillogy or The Hobbit, they were both amazing in their own right, but the story of the Silmarils and their fate simply transcends the concept of "story" itself.
@BlackSpittingCobra lol I never heard about it till you just mentioned it =P lol I don't really know loads about LOtR, only things I read about in my spare time =) Though it really shows how much potential a Lord of The Rings movie from the era of Morgoth would have.
The thing is, though I think it's kickass that Arwen is the one to save Frodo and take him to Rivendell, I really do wish that they'd shown more kickass Arwen in the other films.
@lamecow21 Well, THOSE are some fine words from a semi-literate trollbag who likely never touched a Tolkien book in all his life....
Tell you what, troll: You can go back to plaguing garage band videos until your account gets suspended, and the grown-ups who HAVE actually read the books and watched the movies can handle the ongoing book-versus-movie debate, okay?
@twilightgirl941 I'd have to give it up for Elrond. He had a little bit of a different feel in the books, but he's always a wise and austere character no matter what. And having Hugo Weaving (a great actor in my book) play him in the movies certainly didn't hurt. :-)
Gollum is another good character, but I much preferred him in The Hobbit. That riddle duel between Bilbo and Gollum was priceless.
@ciracris well in all the books no elf has ever used the term. In the foreword to the trilogy and on the wiki it is stated in a quote from tolkein that the term she elf isn't of elvish origin so isn't technically a real term. i presume they have a word for male and female in elvish but they don't split elves into elves and she elves. only wraiths and dwarves ever used the term she-elf.

@BloodyBay y would i tell u to read the books if i didnt

@twilightgirl941 I'd have to give it up for Elrond. He had a little bit of a different feel in the books, but he's always a wise and austere character no matter what. And having Hugo Weaving (a great actor in my book) play him in the movies certainly didn't hurt. :-)
Gollum is another good character, but I much preferred him in The Hobbit. That riddle duel between Bilbo and Gollum was priceless.

I haven't read the books for a while, but I barely remember Arwen being in the books. Didn't Gandalf and Elrond make this rushing river?

@finnwesjohn
yes they did Gandalf did the horses but they both helped make it

techically she-elf is not a real term according to tolkien (hides under desk away from thumbs down and geek comments as i don't care)

are you serious? i didn't know that. can you expand, please? :D
(atm, thinking of so-called female elves. Galadriel... kinda odd to tell that that being is a female. But Arwen?)
ciracris 2 years ago
@ciracris well in all the books no elf has ever used the term. In the foreword to the trilogy and on the wiki it is stated in a quote from tolkein that the term she elf isn't of elvish origin so isn't technically a real term. i presume they have a word for male and female in elvish but they don't split elves into elves and she elves. only wraiths and dwarves ever used the term she-elf.

nice :) thank you.

In Spanish:
Ringwraith: "Entréganos al mediano, mujer elfa"
Arwen: "Si le queréis, ¡venid a por él!"
