This is not 4 talented friends just having some fun. This is excellent. Well blended and balanced. You should have professionally recorded this and others like this one. I will buy one!
The way they're dressed is misleading haha. Great performance! You should share your gifts at the nearest Catholic Mass..the Church needs a return to this type of music.
these guys are obviously much more trained than their sneakers and shorts might suggest! There's a fair amount of excellent education (both choral and musicological) behind a performance like this. Splendid job.
Who's the sopranist...is he a professioinal musician or is singing just something on the side? I'm almost 17 and still sing treble, although i have almost no lower register...
holy crap. I wish my friends gathered to sing choral reneissance music on a friday night. but nooo, they want to go out to bars and loud places full of people. you guys are much more my speed ;D

Great falseto saprano:) a litle louder alto:( great job tenor nd bass!! i love this song we are singin it for our choir competition and we sound great.. one more thing saprano back off a little and let the others shine as well. other then that beautifully done:)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Byrd was a favorite composer of Elizabeth and her court, and a member of the Chapel Royal. Elizabeth was a moderate Protestant who loved the old ritual and music of the Church in which she grew up, and so retained vestments, candles, and polyphony. Tallis was also a RC, and in the Chapel Royal. Byrd continued to write for Elizabeth and the chapel, even though he also paid recusancy fines. This piece was probably RC house church music (Gradualia, 1605).
@MTGlipp I'm almost certain that Byrd actually intended for this piece to be performed exactly the way it was done here, by an all male quartet. In Byrd's day, Queen Elizabeth I of England persecuted Catholics like Byrd, so Masses were said in people's houses instead of churches. They probably couldn't fit a whole choir into a house with the rest of the people attending Mass.
Yes =) I knew about the fact that it would have been sung like this in the Tudor period, but still..I don't live in the Tudor Period =P and unfortunately I had never heard this piece (or any Renaissnace Choral Music really) in quartet form. it makes for a much more delicate sound
@MTGlipp Delicate isn't the word for it. To me, particularly with this piece, it makes it sound even more sacred. Some of Byrd's other works, such as Ego Sum Panis Vivus, sound just as good or better when sung by a full choir, but I don't think any full choir can touch a quartet like this for this piece. The intonation would have to be absolutely perfect.
well obviously, both styles have very different and equally appealling qualities to them, but I would guess things like lovely intonation and perfect balance would be much easier to acheive in a quartet, if all four of them are consciously working for the same thing =)
Oh well done, guys. Beautiful, controlled and blended sound, gorgeous lines. You sound like a consort of viols! I too must single out Nick Zammit, countertenor - loved the twiddles starting at 3:07. Oh, and alto and tenor at 3:15, with the sweet inflé on "mi-" of "miserere. Yum. Want recording.
All 4 of you are incredible...but, whomever amongst you that is singing the soprano part is talented beyond anything words can describe...simply wonderful and limitless in the beauty of your vocal intonations and harmony intermixing. Bravo! When is the album coming out?
GREAT! That's probably very close to the way it sounded in Byrd's day. Our church's Latin Mass choir is scheduled to sing this in the Spring. It's nice to only hear one voice per part, especially when you're trying to pick out the tenor part.
Have you guies thought about getting a high suprano, and letting Alllegri's Miserere rip?
Well this song fits so well in the story i have to present i'm going to have to play it. I sang this song one and you men do it better than a whole choir can! Bravo!
Wow! I love you guys! It was beautiful to listen to, and I really liked the way you took a little extra time on the "miserere's"--that was really moving.
well done. You're the only group I find on youtube that sings this stylistically correct (w/o vibrato). However, you're using modern (440) tuning instead of Renaissance tuning (I don't know the change) but it is still incredibly well done.
Gentlemen: Extraordinary. I have heard, and sung, this piece countless times over the years, but few performances approach this kind of passion, workmanship, and tenderness. Thank you.
Absolutely, astoundingly beautiful gentlemen. I've book marked this video and listen to it when I need divine inspiration, which is often. Thank you for sharing your wonderful gifts with us!
i really love this song. i sang it in choir and loved how dark the sound is. i'm amazed with the guy doing the soprano. props to you man. you do it really well and wound so beautiful. all the other guys too. beautiful sound and dynamics.
Well done! Never heard it in F# before. Many people don't realise that 4-voice motets like this are really men's voice music in spite of usually being sung SATB.
You have also proved that presentation doesn't matter two hoots, so long as the singing is good (Americans, take note). More please - including the baggy shorts and trousers, the music stands and the self-direction!
absolutely wonderful! most male sopranos grate on my nerves but you were great. next time turn down the soprano down a bit so the other voices can be heard. i'd love you guys to tackle sweelinck's psalm 96. polyphony music can get a bit muddy with large choirs; the purity of a single voice per part is heavenly.
