  • @LouisvilleTorn8do

Byrd was a favorite composer of Elizabeth and her court, and a member of the Chapel Royal. Elizabeth was a moderate Protestant who loved the old ritual and music of the Church in which she grew up, and so retained vestments, candles, and polyphony. Tallis was also a RC, and in the Chapel Royal. Byrd continued to write for Elizabeth and the chapel, even though he also paid recusancy fines. This piece was probably RC house church music (Gradualia, 1605).

  • perfect! *****

  • Ethereal. Beautiful in its simplicity and you four gentlemen did a stunningly impeccable job. Talented doesn't even begin to cover it!

  • As a vocalist with a lack of male singers in my life with skill such as all of you. I am quite jealous. Wonderful job, men. =]

  • Incredible.

  • awesome singing! lovely countertenor voicing, sounds like viols given life XD

  • BONER!!!1

  • Amazing! I got goosebumps.

  • amazing falsetto on the soprano line! :D

  • Wow =)

I've never heard this one in quartet style before

    and it sounds wonderful

    the intonation throughout was brilliant

the Alto line blended very well

and the man singing Soprano, your tone was beautiful, although perhaps a tad loud at some points =P

Seriously though, well done. The Renaissance was probably my favourite period for choral music

  • @MTGlipp I'm almost certain that Byrd actually intended for this piece to be performed exactly the way it was done here, by an all male quartet. In Byrd's day, Queen Elizabeth I of England persecuted Catholics like Byrd, so Masses were said in people's houses instead of churches. They probably couldn't fit a whole choir into a house with the rest of the people attending Mass.

  • @LouisvilleTorn8o

Yes =) I knew about the fact that it would have been sung like this in the Tudor period, but still..I don't live in the Tudor Period =P and unfortunately I had never heard this piece (or any Renaissnace Choral Music really) in quartet form. it makes for a much more delicate sound

  • @MTGlipp Delicate isn't the word for it. To me, particularly with this piece, it makes it sound even more sacred. Some of Byrd's other works, such as Ego Sum Panis Vivus, sound just as good or better when sung by a full choir, but I don't think any full choir can touch a quartet like this for this piece. The intonation would have to be absolutely perfect.

  • @LouisvilleTorn8o

    Yes

well obviously, both styles have very different and equally appealling qualities to them, but I would guess things like lovely intonation and perfect balance would be much easier to acheive in a quartet, if all four of them are consciously working for the same thing =)

  • :O who's sing that high i cant even dang

  • Er.... wow!

I love this. What's the name of the group? Is there a cd or anything? I want it!

  • FANTASTIC FANTASTIC FANTASTIC FANTASTIC !!!!

  • Oh well done, guys. Beautiful, controlled and blended sound, gorgeous lines. You sound like a consort of viols! I too must single out Nick Zammit, countertenor - loved the twiddles starting at 3:07. Oh, and alto and tenor at 3:15, with the sweet inflé on "mi-" of "miserere. Yum. Want recording.

  • Beautiful

  • WOW AMAZING!! U GUYS ARE EXTREMELY TALENTED..THEIR SOUND IS JUST SO PURE, BUT ESPECIALLY THEY GUY SINGING SOPRANO..BEAUTIFULLY DONE!!

  • I revise my comments...the soprano part is actually a countertenor...sorry for the mixup!

  • AH MIND BLOWN.

  • All 4 of you are incredible...but, whomever amongst you that is singing the soprano part is talented beyond anything words can describe...simply wonderful and limitless in the beauty of your vocal intonations and harmony intermixing. Bravo! When is the album coming out?

  • Utterly fantastic.

  • @AliPali94 The first on the left

  • The gentleman singing the soprano part has a breathtaking voice.

  • @ToxicPopsicle Agreed, brother ;)

  • GREAT! That's probably very close to the way it sounded in Byrd's day. Our church's Latin Mass choir is scheduled to sing this in the Spring. It's nice to only hear one voice per part, especially when you're trying to pick out the tenor part.

Have you guies thought about getting a high suprano, and letting Alllegri's Miserere rip?

  • Well this song fits so well in the story i have to present i'm going to have to play it. I sang this song one and you men do it better than a whole choir can! Bravo!

  • Brilliant, I felt like I was in some medieval monastery; inspirational!

  • bravo!!

  • Absolutely wonderful. I can't work it out, who is singing the soprano bit?

  • Wow! I love you guys! It was beautiful to listen to, and I really liked the way you took a little extra time on the "miserere's"--that was really moving.

  • You guys are massively talented and this is excellent! Very impressive!!

I must say though to the Soprano, with no offence, it looks like you're grabbing your junk to hit those high notes. That's dedication!! :)

  • 3.06 love the little counter tenor rip !!

  • great sound guys, from top to bottom .Counter tenor has sublime tone to match others.

  • well done. You're the only group I find on youtube that sings this stylistically correct (w/o vibrato). However, you're using modern (440) tuning instead of Renaissance tuning (I don't know the change) but it is still incredibly well done.

  • Great sound!

  • Comment removed

  • I just Love It! Please put moe of your group on more

  • that is an awesome sound i am very impressed, however i do feel as if there is too much melody coming from the counter tenor

  • beautiful piece of music performed very well

  • Impresionant !

  • will you guys come sing me to sleep? k thanks. :)

  • The way this music SHOULD sound! BRAVO, boys!!!

  • i love this piece.. the timing is so difficult but you guys make it sound effortless! :) well done

  • Well sung; try recording in a better ambience, this one's not very forgiving...

  • Awesome.

  • Lovely ornament at the second "o dolci...".

  • Such a great piece.I got the opportunity to sing this with Chanticleer in San Francisco!

  • Very beautiful! That's an awesome performance for just "fun" :)

  • Super!

  • This is amazing. I am absolutely lost for words. i am doing this piece with my choir at the moment and i will have to show them this!!!

  • just wow. that was amaaaaazing

  • Nice ornaments in the top part from 3.05 onwards.

  • "I think that went pretty well".

    I should coco! :D

That was marvellous! Thank you very much indeed. <3

  • Gentlemen: Extraordinary. I have heard, and sung, this piece countless times over the years, but few performances approach this kind of passion, workmanship, and tenderness. Thank you.

  • Talented indeed. This is rather excellent.

  • pleasantly surprised! Very good.

  • nice ornamentation, top voice. Props to the early music study that clearly comes through in some of your musical decisions.

  • WOW you guys are very good.

  • Wow that was great guys...I might give this a try. xD

  • Crap, Steven, every time I listen to this, I get stoked for my wedding!! You guys should start a website for singing at weddings. Y'all rock!!!

  • I really love your work!!

  • "I think that went pretty well" haha, it certainly did!

Beautifully sung and with a male soprano!

  • Beautiful voices ! Perhaps a little static here and there.

  • excellent

  • bravi!!

  • Absolutely amazing!

    The soprano part is beautiful!

  • Absolutely, astoundingly beautiful gentlemen. I've book marked this video and listen to it when I need divine inspiration, which is often. Thank you for sharing your wonderful gifts with us!

  • That was incredible - I just did this piece under direction of an ex-member of Chanticleer but you guys totally owned it!

  • Great job. Every voice is so clean. Thank you.

  • oh man! well thats was fantastic. i was able to pick out the tenor part great job dudes.

  • Well done! Never heard it in F# before. Many people don't realise that 4-voice motets like this are really men's voice music in spite of usually being sung SATB.

You have also proved that presentation doesn't matter two hoots, so long as the singing is good (Americans, take note). More please - including the baggy shorts and trousers, the music stands and the self-direction!

  • Using collective terms robs other people of their individuality and makes you look like a douchebag, douchebag.

  • Wow! What a beautiful sound!

  • absolutely wonderful! most male sopranos grate on my nerves but you were great. next time turn down the soprano down a bit so the other voices can be heard. i'd love you guys to tackle sweelinck's psalm 96. polyphony music can get a bit muddy with large choirs; the purity of a single voice per part is heavenly.

  • i would like to hear more of the inside voices, but pretty well done, also the figiting is a little distracting.

  • Yes, that did go pretty well. It went better than pretty well (oh us modest musicians). I did some of Byrd in high school and I'm doing more in college (this song with a full chorus actually).

  • Me encantó...suenan de veras hermoso!

    Gracias =D !

  • Qué bello sonido!!!!!!!!!

Muy bien entendida y lograda la música.

    Maravilloso.

  • complimenti musiker 110!

    110 E LODE

    are you the countert.?

    awesome!

  • If this is "just having some fun", it's scary to think how powerful this would be if you were serious. Excellent performance! Bravo!

  • This countertenor is fantastic. NIcely done, just work on unifying your entrances on 'cujus latus". Yes, William Byrd IS the best.

  • Beautifully done.

  • that's terrific

  • cute ornamentation - one conductor might have been neater..

  • Wonderful. Bravo

  • I'm in love with Byrd music.

    Beautiful.

Stylish and clean as it must be sung.

    Brava!

  • beautiful!

  • awesome

  • Lovely!!!
