Me too! I got an old 60is Zildjian A off some kind, and right now im using a 70is top A top. its pretty close too this, but the stick sound and the dry sound off this hihat is magic! its like its got the beautiful dry trash from an old K cymbal but at the same time the kind off varm mid too litle higher pitched punchy stick sound from an A. And who playes it better than Roy!
I love when he does the Trademark Snare Chatter after the "I'm messing with the bassist!" part, and you can see these guys in the audience grinning and shaking their heads...
His touch is incredible. He could tap any drum or cymbal one time and sound EXACTLY like Roy Haynes. He gets such a special sound out of every stroke.
Roy is a monster, and still going at 85. But the whole group sounds fabulous. Burton, and Swallow round out one amazing rhythm section. (I wish Steve would still play upright once in a while.) Getz's tone was gorgeous.
A great performance by our master drummer! Notice how Roy displayed crisp breaks under the head, then subtlely and gentle draws the audience into his natural thunder!
@Sic4ce I'm not sure thats entirely true. This vid looks like it was done in the late 60's He had already played with many of the greats (Trane, Bird, Dizzy, Monk, Bud Powell, Sarah Vaughn,) before the recording of this show so i wouldnt think there would have been much for him to prove as such. I dont think he was that young here either as he is actually a couple of years older than Stan, they would have both been in there early to Mid 40's. I think it depends what your definition of "young" is

Haynes (Snap, Crackle, Pop) was far superior to Roach.
Somebody had to say it and crush the orthodoxy of ignorance that permeates YouTube.

1:29 proves that Getz had the weight of human History on his shoulders.

Getz's solo is pretty ridiculous too, nice and simple, pure mastery.
